Letter to the Editor
Should be a voting matter
Editor:
A while back I was fortunate enough to
catch the early morning program of the County
Commissioners about the jail situation. I was
disappointed in that there were no questions
phoned in and my questions weren't covered in the
discussion.
I've been told there were people who tried to
call but received a busy signal, I was hoping to hear
what standards the present jail doesn't meet since the
State Legislature - hasn't established any standards
for a county jail-detention center. State and federal
jails have standards but not county according to
information I have been able to obtain.
What makes our present jail illegal? And if
it isn't illegal then the worry about lawsuits is, I
think, questionable since the lawsuits would be due
to operation and administration, not the facility.
Another question is why is it suddenly
necessary to transport our prisoners elsewhere
especially since, I believe, we have occasionally
housed prisoners from another county? They say
no county funds would be involved with a leaseto-own
arrangement but as there seems to be a
scarcity of prisoners and the current thinking is for
treatment, not jail, it seems to me like the rent of
cell space would have to be pretty high to cover the
rent payment. Wouldn't it take county money to
make the difference between the amount raised by
rent and the yearly payment? We usually have only
Mrs. Guenther. a dozen or so prisoners and would need about 44
they say to meet expenses in the new jail, and even
with some outside prisoners the financial picture is
pretty bleak.
There is a lot of room for expansion in the
present facilitywith a few thousand - not millions
of dollars - and some common sense I am sure
it would compare with the average county jail in
Montana.
They say it is not necessary to put this thing
her special day;
up for a vote but why wouldn't they want to? I
am sending this letter to River Run news, GEG and
the Courier as I feel this a county matter, not just
Most people don't know that back in 1912,
Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured in
England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000
jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera
Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call
for the great ship after its stop in New York.
This would have been the largest single shipment
of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we
know, the great ship did not make it to New York.
The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was
forever lost.
The people of Mexico, who were crazy about
mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery,
were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so
great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning,
which they still observe to this day.
The National Day of Mourning occurs each
year on May 5th and is known, of course, as Sinko
De Mayo.
