yarra street pier<br />
The original Yarra Street Pier, built in the 1800’s, was destroyed by fi re in<br />
1988. Funding is being sought to rebuild the pier which is viewed as a crucial<br />
piece <strong>of</strong> infrastructure to provide various facilities with resultant benefi ts to<br />
the city including:<br />
• safe harbour;<br />
• itinerant berthing;<br />
• re-fuelling;<br />
• sullage removal;<br />
• public access for promenading and fi shing;<br />
• ferry berth;<br />
• large ship berth;<br />
• tourism or maritime related retail activities;<br />
• small hospitality retailing (cafes);<br />
• wave attenuation for the Royal <strong>Geelong</strong> Yacht Club marina.<br />
With the exception <strong>of</strong> wave attenuation for the RGYC marina, the above uses<br />
should also be considered as part <strong>of</strong> any development <strong>of</strong> Cunningham Pier,<br />
the Waterfront Pavilion or Steampacket Quay. Rebuilding <strong>of</strong> the Yarra Street<br />
Pier should not be considered in isolation from these other sites or from the<br />
rest <strong>of</strong> Fisherman's Basin.<br />
Recommendations<br />
• Proposals for the reconstruction <strong>of</strong> the Yarra Street Pier should be considered in the context <strong>of</strong> any similar or competing development ideas being<br />
suggested for Fishermen's Basin, Cunningham Pier, the Waterfront Pavilion site and Steampacket Quay.<br />
• Public use and access to the entire pier should be given the highest priority in any development proposal.<br />
• Development should seek active maritime or tourism uses.<br />
• The design <strong>of</strong> the pier should ensure it is capable <strong>of</strong> accommodating a range <strong>of</strong> uses and structures.<br />

• Any structures proposed for a pier should be architecturally designed, visually light, allow for cross-bay views and present well on all elevations.<br />
• Building heights on the pier should be subservient to the built form <strong>of</strong> the waterfront and generally be less than 16 metres <strong>of</strong> four storeys in height.<br />
Exceptions to this should only be allowed in the case <strong>of</strong> singular 'iconic' building that delivers a nett community gain (Refer appendix 1).<br />
• Ensure that any horizontal built form includes wide 'breaks' rather than constituting a single continuous form along the pier.<br />
• Pier development should include a traffi c management solution at the termination <strong>of</strong> Yarra Street to ensure pedestrian priority and maintain continuity <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Baywalk.<br />
• Any new developments must include on-site screened enclosures for rubbish, recycling and other utilites to ensure they are visually unobtrusive.<br />
