eastern beach swimming pool & sea baths
Built between 1928 and 1939 and renovated in 1992, the Eastern Beach
Bathing Complex retains its heritage protected Art Deco form. The semicircular
sea baths lie adjacent to the oval shaped swimming pool and the
kiosk and amenities buildings which sits in a concrete paved plaza. This
ensemble can be approached by the grand axial staircase from Eastern
Beach.
The area is characterised by its landscape of curved sea walls, the semicircular
promenade around the sea baths, the circular concrete pool, the
symmetry of the landscape design and surrounding buildings, the axial
staircase, pavilion shelters, ornamental fountain, standard lamps and
signature plantings. Eastern Beach Bathing Complex and pergola is listed
by the City of Greater Geelong. The Eastern Beach Complex is listed by the
National Trust.
In addition to the purpose-built swimming and recreational facilities of Eastern
Beach, the area includes beach to the western and eastern side of the
promenade which is used by swimmers for water access. It is critical that
the beach areas are continually renourished to maintain a high standard of
amenity and that dredging continue in the swimming enclosure to ensure
appropriate depth is maintained for public safety.
This area offers a unique waterfront experience. The concourse effi ciently
connects the various facilities and attractions. Future consideration might be
given to the provision of additional shade through soft landscaping.
Recommendations and Specifi c Actions
• Investigate the provision of additional shade on the concrete apron in
front of the café/restaurant.
• Regular programmed dredging and beach renourishment to continue
with major renourishment scheduled every 4-5 years to maintain a high
degree of user safety and amenity.
• Improve natural beach entry on the eastern side of the promenade with
sand renourishment.
• The swimming pool and baths to remain as free public facilities.
• Works and maintenance must be planned within the requirements of the
heritage listings and overlays.
