About <strong>Camp</strong> Menzies<br />

What is included in <strong>the</strong> camp fees?<br />

All camp fees include: supervision and instruction from<br />

trained staff, program activities, transportation, sickness/<br />

accident insurance, camp T-shirt, patch, group pho<strong>to</strong>,<br />

daily meals, snacks and a one-hour horseback riding<br />

session.<br />

Is transportation available <strong>to</strong> and from camp?<br />

Bus transportation is available from Sacramen<strong>to</strong>,<br />

Modes<strong>to</strong>, S<strong>to</strong>ck<strong>to</strong>n, and Angels <strong>Camp</strong>. Travel <strong>to</strong> and<br />

from pickup points is <strong>the</strong> family’s responsibility.<br />

What health and safety standards are maintained at<br />

<strong>Camp</strong> Menzies?<br />

<strong>Camp</strong>s must meet established standards for health<br />

and safety, site, program and personnel, which are set<br />

by state and local governments and <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> of<br />

<strong>the</strong> U.S.A. The camp staff is also trained in safety and<br />

emergency procedures.<br />

What is ACA?<br />

<strong>Camp</strong> Menzies is a member of <strong>the</strong><br />

American <strong>Camp</strong>ing Association<br />

(ACA). Every three years, a team<br />

of ACA officials, who are camping<br />

professionals, visit <strong>the</strong> camp <strong>to</strong> evaluate compliance<br />

with <strong>the</strong> high standards set by a national ACA standards<br />

board. ACA standards address <strong>the</strong> camp’s practices,<br />

policies, and procedures as <strong>the</strong>y relate <strong>to</strong> personnel,<br />

program, administration, and site and facilities. <strong>Camp</strong><br />

Menzies was visited in <strong>the</strong> summer of 2007 and our<br />

accreditation was renewed. Only camps that are<br />

accredited may bear <strong>the</strong> American <strong>Camp</strong> Association<br />

accredited seal.<br />

What are <strong>the</strong> counselors like?<br />

<strong>Camp</strong> staff members are enthusiastic, talented and<br />

caring adults, who are selected on <strong>the</strong> basis of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

experience, ability <strong>to</strong> serve as role models and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

genuine desire <strong>to</strong> work with children. The ratio of<br />

counselors <strong>to</strong> girls varies with <strong>the</strong> age of <strong>the</strong> campers.<br />

<strong>Camp</strong> units with younger girls have <strong>the</strong> greatest ratio of<br />

counselors <strong>to</strong> campers.<br />

songs, games, first aid and safety, team building, age level<br />

characteristics, how <strong>to</strong> deal with homesickness, and<br />

more. Staff who supervise high adventure activities are<br />

required <strong>to</strong> have additional training and qualifications.<br />

Where do girls sleep?<br />

Sleeping arrangements vary, depending on <strong>the</strong> camp<br />

program you choose. <strong>Camp</strong>ers sleep on metal beds<br />

with mattresses ei<strong>the</strong>r: under <strong>the</strong> stars; on a wooden<br />

platform with a canvas cover; or, in a sleeping cabin with<br />

solid walls, roof and screened windows. <strong>Camp</strong>ers who<br />

choose a program with “sleep under <strong>the</strong> stars” may<br />

bring <strong>the</strong>ir own tent from home.<br />

Can my daughter be in <strong>the</strong> same unit as her friends?<br />

Prior <strong>to</strong> camp placement your daughter may request <strong>to</strong><br />

be with one special friend in <strong>the</strong> same unit and program,<br />

if her friend is about <strong>the</strong> same age and ability. To be<br />

considered for <strong>the</strong> same unit, both girls must request<br />

each o<strong>the</strong>r and <strong>the</strong> registration forms need <strong>to</strong> be mailed<br />

in <strong>the</strong> same envelope. <strong>Girl</strong>s requesting a buddy must<br />

mail or fax in <strong>the</strong>ir forms <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r, you cannot request<br />

buddies when your register online. If your friend is not<br />

a currently registered <strong>Girl</strong> Scout she can still join you<br />

at camp if she completes a registration form and pays<br />

an additional $12 fee. After placement, if two or more<br />

friends are attending <strong>the</strong> same session and program<br />

<strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r, parents can request that <strong>the</strong>y be placed in <strong>the</strong><br />

same tent using <strong>the</strong> Parent Letter <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Counselors which<br />

is included in <strong>the</strong> camp information packet.<br />

Can I visit <strong>the</strong> camp?<br />

We invite you <strong>to</strong> attend our Open House on Saturday,<br />

June 12, when both campers and <strong>the</strong>ir parents can visit<br />

<strong>the</strong> camp, <strong>to</strong>ur <strong>the</strong> facility, and meet staff who will be<br />

working <strong>the</strong>re. The <strong>Camp</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r will be <strong>the</strong>re <strong>to</strong><br />

answer any questions you may have.<br />

What training does camp staff receive?<br />

<strong>Camp</strong> staff receives extensive on-site training<br />

prior <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> arrival of all campers. Training<br />
