19 Glebe Report May 13, 2005 SPORTS 2007 FIFA World Youth Soccer Championship at Lansdowne Park The Canadian Soccer Association has announced that Ottawa has been selected as one of the cities that will host the 2007 FIFA World Youth Championship in Canada. It joins Edmonton, Toronto, Victoria, Vancouver and Montréal in serving as a host city. The FIFA World Youth Cup is the world's second largest soccer event (after the World Cup) and is watched by hundreds of millions of television viewers. The championship is expected to generate significant economic impacts in Canada, including millions of dollars for host cities such as Ottawa. The international matches will be held at Frank Clair Stadium in July Glebe Little League turns 50 With a parade through the Glebe ending at Lansdowne Park, the Glebe Little League was launched in 1954. Abby Polonetsky described the organization's early days in the Glebe Report issue of June 10, 1994: "The Glebe Little League Baseball Association (GLL) is one of the oldest in Canada. It was the first chartered Little League organization in Ottawa, established in 1954 with four teams of 11- and 12-year-olds who played on two ball diamonds built at Lansdowne Park by the Gyro Club... .In 1991 the City of Ottawa built two new Little League diamonds at Lansdowne Park, complete with fences, dugouts and lights....The GLL exists as a volunteer organization. In addition to registration fees, we raise monies to cover the cost of our operation by holding barbeques at Lansdowne Park and by soliciting local business groups to sponsor individual teams." She went on to thank a long list of 2007, and the grounds and facilities of Lansdowne Park will be converted into "Soccer Central" for this worldclass event. The University of Ottawa will also provide training facilities for the championship. Steve Troy, Chair of the Ottawa Bid Committee and President of the Eastern Ontario District Soccer Association, was jubilant about the announcement: "We're very fortunate to be hosting one of soccer's greatest events in the capital region. We have over 100,000 soccer players and many soccer enthusiasts to rally behind the championship. We're going to show Canada and the world that we're the 'Capital of Soccer' in 2007." "generous and loyal sponsors." Wearing team shirts bearing the names of local businesses is a Glebe tradition. One family which made a special contribution to local baseball was the Britton family. Lionel Britton, after whom the tot lot at Fifth Avenue and O'Connor Street is named, was a founding member of the Glebe Little League. He spent 20 years assisting with league activities, 10 of those as league president. His son Ted took over both Lionel's involvement in baseball and his business, Britton's Smoke Shop after his father's death in 1978. As sports writer for the Glebe Report, and earlier for The Glebe News, Ted brought fame to local players at Lansdowne and kept interest in the sport high. This year, games get underway in early May. There is also a summer competitive league in July and August with tryouts in June. GLL will be hosting the Minor District Playdowns this summer. The Ottawa Race Weekend, to be held this year on May 27-29, has been a beloved community event for the last 30 years, bringing thousands of people from across Canada, the United States and further afield to the capital city to run, walk or skate. The feature events of the weekend are the ING Ottawa Marathon and the MDS Nordion 10K, both of which run through the Glebe. The weekend also includes the ING Ottawa Half Marathon, MDS Nordion 5K, ING Ottawa Family 2K, and inline skate events. In addition to the races, there are pasta dinners, awards ceremonies, seminars and Canada's largest sport and fitness expo. The Race Weekend is also a major fundraiser for the Ottawa Hospital Foundation, having raised more than $3.5 million over the past four years. For those looking to get involved, raising pledges for the Ottawa Hospital can add extra meaning and inspiration to your run. Cheering stations along the route give out prizes, making it a great way for the whole family to spend the day. Better yet, get the kids out to volunteer. The Race Weekend organizers have always credited the success of the event to the thousands of people from the community who come out and lend a hand, manning barricades, helping at registration or handing out medals. "Glebe residents have always been very supportive of the event," said Susan Longbottom, Race Weekend President. "After the 2004 event, runners were posting messages on our website, thanking people in the Glebe who sat out on their lawns and cheered for them as they passed by. That encouragement means a lot to our participants!" While there are road closures in the area on both Sat., May 28, and Sun., May 29, they are kept to a minimum and won't interfere with the Great Glebe Garage Sale, held that same 'weekend.
