A PHARMACY LOCATION SINCE 1910
Your Family Health Care Provider
In Memorium
At this time we would like to express our deepest sympathy to the
family of Alan Forhan. This has been a Pharmacy location since 1910;
Al was the third owner, buying from Pharmacist Bingham Howe.
Mr. Howe was the father of another one of the Glebe's favourites, the
late Dr. Jim Howe. Al was a pharmacist who supported and helped
the members of this community for 27 years. As" a staunch health
advocate, Al banned cigarette sales in his Pharmacy and was very
active in having it banned for all Pharmacies. His zest for life led him
through many great adventures around the world. This fact he said
towards the end gave him great comfort to know he had lived life to
the fullest and had no regrets. He will be missed.
Despiteor maybe, because of
the rainy weather, First Avenue
School's book sale, which took
place April 21-23, was another
smash hit this year, attracting booklovers
and bargain-hunters of all
ages and raising valuable funds for
the school council. Proceeds from
this year's sale will go towards
playground improvements.
Putting together this annual event
takes a lot of hard work and our
thanks go out to all the people who
contributed to its success: the
students, who collected over 27,000
books; this year's steering
committee, who worked long and
hard in the months and weeks
leading up to the sale and
throughout the sale itself; and the
over 300 volunteers, who helped
sort, shelf, price and sell the books.
This was the 22nd edition of the
book sale and, judging by the
enthusiasm of students, staff,
parents and other "customers," the
tradition looks set to continue to be
strong over the coming years.
First Avenue School Council
would like to extend a special thanks
to Jennifer of J.D. Adam & Co. for
donating the work aprons used by
members of the book sale steering
committee and other volunteers.
Thanks for keeping us clean!
recent one, is the annual Grade 6
field trip to the Cosmodome Space
Camp in Montreal. Designed to tie
into the Grade 6 science curriculum,
which includes a unit on space, this
year's three-day trip offered just the
right mix of education and fun.
During their stay, the campers
followed a special program based on
NASA's training program for
astronauts. Structured around
experimentation and scientific
workshops, it included training
sessions on four NASA-type zerogravity
simulators and the
completion of a space mission on a
full-scale simulator of the space
shuttle.
WELCOME TO
PRINCIPAL MIVI JANSEN
In mid-April, Mivi Jansen arrived
at First Avenue School to assume the
role of Acting Principal. She takes
over from Gayle Singer, who has
taken leave for the remainder of the
school year. Over the past nine
years, Mivi Jansen has been
principal at Arch Street Public
School, Woodroffe Avenue Public
School and Robert E. Wilson Public
School; for many years, she worked
in French Immersion at Rockcliffe
Park Public School.
Although Mivi Jansen retired
from education in June 2004, she
happily accepted the challenge of
joining the First Avenue students,
staff, parents and community to
complete this school year.
