3 Glebe Report May 13, 2005 N EWS o a. Ottawa Centre candidates for the next federal election MP Ed Broadbent during last year's NDP nomination meeting for Ottawa Centre. The May 4 announcement that MP Ed Broadbent would be retiring from politics was a surprise to many. Mr. Broadbent, respected as a veteran politician and statesman, especially for his work in human rights and social justice, has made a huge imprint on the Canadian political landscape. He leaves politics to spend more time with his wife Lucille, who is undergoing treatment for cancer. In the next federal election, Ottawa Centre will still be one of the most interesting political races to watch. Liberal Richard Mahoney and Green Party candidate David Chernushenko both intend to run again, as do many candidates from smaller political parties. be the wild card in this contest, will be The Tory contender, who could chosen on Sunday, May 15 at the GCC. VI! /A\ - ' rem-it's pp= =Ea tau Emergency route (no parking) BY KEN LEESE The 20th annual Great Glebe Garage Sale (GGGS) will happen on May 28, RAIN or SHINE! The annual GGGS is one of the many things that make living in this vibrant community so wonderful. For a few hours on the day of the sale, the population of our neighbourhood swells with people coming from the suburbs, nearby towns and, sometimes, from other cities. The streets and sidewalks are alive with pedestrians in search of deals and hidden treasures, or the simple pleasure of a walk in a festival atmosphere. The Glebe Community Association endorses charitable donations to The Ottawa Food Bank. We encourage vendors to donate 10 per cent of their earningstax receipts will be issued for donations (see page 1). We raised more than $12,000 last year and hope this year's sale will significantly increase this amount. Here are some simple tips that will improve our annual community event: 'SAFETY: Street congestion has made emergency-vehicle access very difficult in past years. This year, emergency routes along O'Connor from Fifth to Strathcona, on Fifth from O'Connor to Bank, and on Strathcona from O'Connor to Metcalfe, will be "no parking" zones similar to other special events. Parking enforcement will also concentrate on no-stopping zones and double parking. *CARS: Find a good spot to park your car. Walking, biking or skating your way through the different streets in the Glebe will give you a better treasure-hunting advantage than being stuck in traffic as the sale gears up. Mutchmor (and perhaps other Glebe schools) will sell parking spots to raise funds. Although we don't have definite information as this article goes to press, it's also possible that free parking will be available at Lansdowne Park that morning. If you're a Glebe resident, try to park your vehicle off the street to make room for the many visitors we expect again this year. "LARGE ITEMS: Most vendors will be more than happy to hold large items purchased until the afternoon when the traffic has dwindled. An impromptu sales receipt can easily be drawn up with a deposit and an exchange of telephone numbers. 'CASH: There are only a few ATMs in the Glebe; at every Garage Sale, they are depleted early on. *TRASH: Vendors, please place a garbage can by the curb for litterwith the large crowds this event attracts, there can be a large amount of litter produced. EDITORIAL PAGE Thanks and farewell The pen is once again being handed on to a new editor. After two and a half years at the editor's desk, I am now about to refocus attention on my busy family life. A sincere thank you to all the staff and volunteers and, of course, to our readers, for your terrific support and for making the job such an interesting and rewarding experience. I am grateful to GNAG, the GCA executive, the staff at the GCC and Councillor Doucet and his office for their generous help in getting information to us so efficiently and reliably. There are well over 200 volunteers involved in producing and distributing each of the 11 issues published each year. The term "volunteer" includes so many different groups: columnists and other writers, photographers, artists, the board of directors, proofreaders and assistants and that essential group, the 140 carriers and sub-deliverers. Although regular staff members receive modest honoraria, they too volunteer many hours of work, doing whatever it takes to get the job done. There are no slackers on this wonderful team. The involvement of such a large number of individuals, year in, year out, is what keeps the paper relevant and vibrant. It is the reason that this is the community's paper in a very real sense. In June, the Glebe Report will celebrate its 32nd anniversary as the community paper for the Glebe and Dow's Lake area. Kudos to all the contributors, advertisers and readers who have helped keep this not-for-profit venture alive and lively. Here's to the future!
