IDHSNA Registered Prefix Policy . . .<br />
Effective 3/17/05<br />
<strong>The</strong> IDHSNA will record, for a fee, the unique prefix to be used by a breeder when naming horses bred by him. Prefixes must be applied for through<br />
the IDHSNA office.<br />
• A Registered Prefix may be registered for a one-time charge and<br />
cannot be used by another person without the written consent<br />
of the registered owner or his or her executors.<br />
• <strong>The</strong> Registered Prefix is for the exclusive use of the breeder and<br />
may precede, follow or be used anywhere in the name of any<br />
horse bred by the owner.<br />
• <strong>The</strong> Registered Prefix is considered part of the horses registered<br />
name.<br />
• <strong>The</strong> Registered Prefix can be used in any/all IDHS(NA) Studbooks<br />
or Registries.<br />
• Registered Prefixes must be unique and distinguishable from all<br />
other Registered Prefixes; and cannot solely be made of obviously<br />
descriptive <strong>Irish</strong> wording ”Shamrock”, “Clover”, etc. If these<br />
words are part of a farm name or business, the obviously descriptive<br />
<strong>Irish</strong> word/name and one or more additional words/<br />
names must be combined to create a unique prefix.<br />
• <strong>The</strong> Registration Office ensures that only the registered user may<br />
use that prefix when applying to the registry for a horse’s name.<br />
• A Registered Prefix that is pronounced the same as one already<br />
registered but has different spelling will not be allowed.<br />
• Prefixes known to be used or registered in Ireland and Great Britain<br />
will not be approved.<br />
• Profane, or overtly offensive prefixes will not be allowed.<br />
• Only members in good standing may apply for a Registered Prefix.<br />
• <strong>The</strong> IDHSNA shall publish a list of Registered Prefixes at least once<br />
a year.<br />
• <strong>The</strong> Registration Officer shall keep the list of Registered Prefixes.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Board of the IDHSNA reserves the right to modify the rules and<br />
processes at any time for prefix retention.<br />
