From Our President . . .
Marketing the Irish Draught, A Rare Breed
by Larry Robbins, IDHSNA President
First off, I want to let the membership know that if you haven’t
been contacted already, committee members are going to
be calling you to fund (1) updating the IDHSNA website and
(2) sponsorship of the Future Event Horse Program. Both of these
efforts are critical to keeping this breed from becoming extinct.
The statistics put the number of purebred Irish Draughts (Mares,
Stallions, and Geldings) at 471 registered in the United States.
We are looking at a commitment of approximately $6,000 per year
for three years for FEH, and an estimated $8,500 for website development.
The Society does not have the money in its coffers to
initiate or sustain either effort, so we are reaching out to you, the
membership, and asking for folks to make a donation to either or
both of these funds.
It is critical that both of these happen at the same time. To be a
serious sponsor of the United States Eventing Associations Future
Event Horse Program means that we will receive a lot of publicity;
folks interested in our horses are going to go to our IDHSNA website.
That means that our website needs to be up to date, with a
focus on what our horses are successfully out there doing, what
we have for sale, and our stallions available for breeding. Public interest
stories are one way we will attract and hold new members.
Historically we have done a good job of presenting the facts on
our website. What we need to do now is keep it updated on a
weekly or bi-weekly basis with new and fresh information; we can
do this by presenting every day, human interest stories about our
breed. This will require that our membership (you) send us your
stories about your horses and what you are doing with them.
Other ways we can market our Rare Breed is to make a
personal commitment to get involved with one or two
shows/clinics a year. Our horses are our very best ambassadors
for the breed. If you get your horses out where the
public can see them you will be generating interest and showing
just how wonderful and versatile our Irish Draught breed is. I recommend
that each Regional Chair and Director-at-Large produce a
show or clinic this year (in case you did not know many regions already
have them in the works). Perhaps these shows/clinics should
not all be breed specific but open to all, providing the opportunity
for others to see our horses in action. This is the one thing that
the USEA FEH Program does for us, the breeders, trainers, handlers
and competitors who are at the FEH series are seeing Irish Draughts
and Irish Draught Sport Horses with correct conformation, movement,
temperament, and minds.
We need to do a better job of marketing our breed before we
lose the Irish Draught entirely. If you haven’t been contacted and
you wish to assist in funding one or both of the efforts, please
contact Bill Appel, Cori Oehley, Tony Phillips, Ann O’Donnell, or
Michelle Robbins. No contribution is too small; please know that
it is critical that we make both of these efforts happen quickly.
Saving our breed is what we are all about, educating the public
about our breed is a must to be successful, and publicity is how
we make it happen.
Memorial to our dear friend Judie Framan . . .
As Lyn Lindstrom posted to a forum on November 10:
“We lost a good friend this week. Judie Framan has left us after
her long battle with cancer. She was a passionate brave lady who will
be greatly missed. Hope she is riding some beautiful Irish horse in the
green pastures of heaven. God bless all who loved and will miss her.”
“The Blarney” Co-editor Laurie Monroe, upon hearing the sad news:
“I knew of course of Judie’s battle with cancer and her subsequent
stroke, but the last I heard was so hopeful, and she was going to ride
again in a therapeutic riding program. Life is so precious and short.
Judie - at least - lived each day to the fullest and stayed involved in
her passions as much as her disease would allow. Lord, we will miss
her, her personality, her integrity, and her sense of humor!”
Judie was a true renaissance woman; a writer, biologist and
nature enthusiast, who brought a wealth of editing and
publishing experience to The Blarney.
After working for nearly two decades as a neurological research scientist,
she switched gears and took a position as technical marketing
manager for a Fortune 500 company. She eventually decided to leave
the corporate world behind when she started her own small business,
the marketing and public relations firm, Judith Framan Associates.
Judie was a passionate advocate for small business owners, in particular
businesses owned by women. She had a long association with
the National Association for Woman Business Owners, founded the
NAWBO chapter for Northern New Mexico and served as its president,
and served on the NAWBO National Board as director of Public Relations. In 1995 Judie appeared before
the US Senate Committee on Small Business, submitting testimony in advocacy of home office tax deductions.
The following year, the U.S. Small Business Administration named her the National Women in Business
Advocate of the Year.
Judie “backed into writing and editing” via the numerous NSF grants she wrote as a research scientist. She later
went on to write feature stories for the publications Today’s Horse Trader (where she was senior
editor), MBE, Smithsonian, Trail Rider, Paso Fino Horse World, The Los Angeles Times and Enterprising
Women (which she founded in 1996 and remained as senior editor
until her passing).
As an equestrian travel journalist, and one of the original creators and field
producers of the
PBS TV series Equitrekking, Judie discovered the Irish Draught while on as-
signment in County
Tipperary, Ireland for the Irish Tourist Board. It was love at first sight. She
just had to have an
Irish Draught, so she divested herself of her Paso Fino herd, and began to
immerse herself in
learning about our beloved breed.
She was Region Chair for the Southwest Region of IDHSNA, serving as a
for the breed in this huge geographic area that is only sparsely populated
She served as Board Liaison for the Show Committee who put on what
most successful and heavily attended Annual Show in the history of IDH-
Equestrian Center in Illinois in 2007, and in this capacity her ability to
obstacles was once again evident.
Judie’s huge heart, steadfast strength and her fierce honesty drew
She was much loved by a broad spectrum of people, and drew them
her. She was a born leader, who understood how to craft teamwork from
She shared love and courage with all who encountered her. The Irish
lost a great and fast friend. She will be missed.
strong advocate
Board Reports . . .
Michèle Métraux, Vice-President, IDHSNA
Your Society was very active in 2010:
• The Inspection tour was successful
• the registration process has become even more efficient
• there have been lots of local events
• the World Equestrian Games were very well attended
by Society members
Congratulations to all who worked hard to make these things
happen!
The Membership statistics show that the Society has held a
steady course of membership when compared with last year’s
numbers. A few single members did not renew, but there has
been a significant increase in family memberships to offset the loss.
It appears that former single members chose to renew with family
memberships – this is very encouraging for both the short and
long terms!
Liz Freeman and I undertook a “housecleaning” of the Yahoo
Member’s List and the Notices List and have asked all members to
rejoin those chat-rooms and communication centers. We extend
that invitation to any members who have not yet signed up. Please
let us know and we will confirm your participation. The Member’s
List has been very interesting (as well as civil!), and we hope you
will re-join and enter into the discussions.
At long last, The Member’s Directory has made it on to the
Society website, and I hope people are finding it useful. Let me
know if you are experiencing problems with it.
I have asked Priscilla Menard, our Registrar/Membership Services
Coordinator, to add her comments.
From Priscilla Menard
Registrar/Membership Coordinator:
As the winter months set in, many of us start thinking and
planning for our horse activities for the coming spring. One
event we are already planning for at the office are the 2011
Inspections. Did you know that there are two general groups
of horses that qualify for Inspection? One group includes the
horses that are currently registered with the Irish Draught Society
of North America and the other group that could be
inspected are the horses that have been imported, already
registered with an approved Society.
As we found out during the World Equestrian Games,
there are many Irish Draught purebreds and partbreds in the
United States that could register with us and then be inspected
during our 2011 Inspection tour. The process is quite easy
for a direct entry with a copy of the registration papers, a
couple of forms filled out and 4 current photos provided
to IDHSNA. Please feel free to contact the office for more
information, or use the forms online to fill out your registration
and join us this year for the 2011 Inspection tour.
Best wishes for a happy, healthful, and horse-full 2011!
Board Reports (con’t) . . .
IDHSNA COMMITTEE UPDATE
The IDHSNA Board of Directors has long been interested in
encouraging member participation on committees. We (the
Society) depend on volunteers (almost exclusively) to do everything
we do! The 2010 Board began the year working on Terms of Reference
(TOR) to be created for all standing committees. TORs describe the
purpose and structure of the committee and its relationship to the IDHSNA
organization of which it is part. The TORs define scope, Deliverables, Goals,
and Jurisdiction among other things. In January of 2011, the Board passed
an initiative to seek multi-region representation on every committee as well
as limit Board members serving as Chairs of committees.
Trying to grow committees is not without some pains. Even when
the Board agree on the intended result, we don’t always agree on how to
achieve it. Being a Board member doesn’t mean you don’t have an opinion
(even a strong one), but it does mean you don’t get to express that opinion
as being from the Board - thus at times, it may seem the Board is not
communicating when we are simply trying not to express our own view
as the Board’s.
All Board committee initiatives are intended to take advantage of the
wealth of untapped talent within the membership. Motions are intended to
encourage changes and growth by all committees, embracing new members
regularly. We hope you will take these changes to committees in the
spirit they were intended and choose to volunteer for your first committee,
volunteer again for a committee, or ask your friends to join you on a
committee.
The Board invites all members to consider how they might contribute
to a committee or project. A list of committees and current members is
shown below. Please bear with us as we evolve. Thanks for being a paid
and volunteering member of the IDHSNA.
Best wishes and Happy New Year, IDHSNA Board of Directors
Vets Corner: Health Problems in Winter . . .
Vet’s Corner: Health Problems of Winter
by Kimberly Brokaw, DVM
spend more time around the barn and other structures where
stray nails may be present.
ColicColic is the most common equine ailment treated in the
winter at my clinic. While some colics are unavoidable,
some can be prevented through good management
strategies. Suggestions for prevention of impaction colic include
access to lots of water (that is not frozen), plenty of hay, minimal
amounts of concentrates, and lots of turnout. Use technology
to be sure every horse, not just the dominant horses, have good
access to water. Solar troughs (e.g. Bob trough), electric buckets,
heaters for the water trough, electric hoses (e.g., Thermohose) or
whatever technology you need should be used to make sure all
horses have water, all of the time. Try to avoid electric shock by
getting an electrician to set up outlets for each stall and use functional
equipment. A horse will usually not drink from a trough after
he is shocked once. Avoid extension cords, overused outlets, and
other fire hazards. Feed soaked hay cubes to geriatrics who are
not eating enough hay or not drinking enough water. Routine dental
care can also help to prevent colic as well as choke.
Recognize colic early. Check on horses regularly during winter.
If a horse isn’t eating his breakfast, think colic. Call the vet rather
than waiting to see if he eats dinner.
Have a colic plan. Frequently vets would be willing to leave
a dose of oral banamine/flunixin paste with an owner for use in
an emergency situation. Don’t use IM banamine because of the
risk of tissue damage. When you call the vet, ask if the vet wants
you to give a dose of banamine before he/she arrives. Don’t give
repeated doses of banamine. The horse who does not respond
to one dose of banamine needs more extensive care (e.g., fluids,
antispasmodics, sedatives, and possibly surgery), not just more
banamine. More banamine can cause toxicity and make the situation
worse. Make sure you have access to a trailer to take the
horse to the hospital if the colic is potentially surgical and you
might consider surgery for that horse. Make sure every horse will
load on a trailer. Practice trailering on a regular basis with each
horse. A surgical colic that won’t get on the trailer won’t get to
the hospital for the surgery, and will die. Try to decide ahead of
time which horses you would have surgery on and which ones
you would have put down. Figure out how you would pay for
colic surgery. A bank account that you have earmarked for horse
emergencies can be a life saver if you have a horse that suddenly
needs colic surgery.
Cold
Make sure every horse (not just the dominant horses) has access
to shelter from wind, snow and cold rain. Blanket any horse
who is underweight or who gets cold easily. Again, geriatric horses
are more likely to be underweight and get cold. Horses are
hayburners who rarely get cold if they have shelter and plenty of
hay. Any horse that is blanketed should have the blanket removed
daily to check for skin conditions, monitor their weight, and check
for injuries.
Hoof care
Continue to get regular farrier care year round. If you are not
riding regularly during the winter, consider pulling the shoes. Continue
to hoof pick regularly so you can prevent thrush and so you
will notice any foreign bodies like a nail in the foot. A nail in the
foot is an emergency that requires immediate, intensive, antibiotic
treatment. Often times, the horse will need to be treated at a hospital
to try to prevent permanent lameness. In the winter, horses
Page 10
SkinHorses, particularly those who do not have adequate
nutrition or who do not have good shelter are often
prone to skin problems. The wet and warm environment
created under a blanket is ideal for fungal and bacterial
growth (rain rot). Also the freeze/ thaw cycles and mud can
lead to conditions that are ideal for pastern dermatitis (scratches).
Watch for rain rot (scabs that fall off, leaving bare, hairless, areas)
and talk with your vet about treatment. Regular grooming can help
prevent some skin diseases.
Respiratory
People frequently confine horses in stalls during the winter.
Good air quality is essential to the health of a stabled horse no
matter what the season of year. But in winter, when your inclination
is to cover windows and vents, disconnect fans and shut barn
doors, inadequate ventilation can cause serious respiratory problems.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD or heaves)
is another condition which I treat more of in winter. Horses are
inside, often in dustier conditions. Combine that with their diet
changing from predominantly grass to predominantly hay and an
ideal atmosphere for COPD is created. In addition to an environment
that is ideal for allergic respiratory conditions, it is also ideal
from transmission of viral infections. The dust can irritate respiratory
membranes, making horses more susceptible to respiratory
infections and bronchitis.
North West Region Year End Report 2010
Jess Walker, NWR Chair
The NW has been one of the lucky regions this year
with weather. We have had lots of sunshine and no
temperature extremes. The region’s members have
been out showing their horses in various disciplines. We have had
2 Purebred colts and 2 fillies, and no sporthorses that I am aware
of, out of this year’s foal crop. Inspections in Bozeman, MT had
1 purebred Stallion, 2 purebred mares pass out of 4 horses total.
When compared to the rest of the country, our success rate is
excellent. Go NW!
Sadly, we did lose a very active member to breast cancer.
Laura Gravatt continued to very near the end with showing her
horses, they gave her the strength to fight the battle. Her 2 fillies
did very well with NWSHBA year-end awards in Dressage Type
in the 2 & 3y/o divisions. Her IDSH Snowy O’Moment has won
the USDF All-Breeds Championship two years in a row! This year’s
score was 71.700.
I attended Laura’s funeral with Lyn Lindstrom. There we found
out Laura was not only an active Society member but also an avid
mentor in Pony Club and the FFA. She is sorely missed by many.
Hannah McNamara started eventing her 6 y/o IDSH, PL Lucky
Regina, purchased in March. They are really enjoying this super
mare. She came back from her events, at the BN level, in the ribbons
from the first one. This mare is by It’s the Luck of the Irish
RID. They even dressed up as a lucky charm at the junior eventing
camp! Sandra, Hannah’s mother, is from Ireland and used to work
at Suma Stud, looking after Mrs. Thatcher, and Glenagyle Rebel as
a yearling. Knowing this breed already, she knew she wanted an
IDSH for her daughter. Welcome to IDHSNA Sandra, Hannah, and
“Poppy”!
Jaunty Star RID (Jim), owned by Kim Huges of DKH Sporthorses
in Alberta Canada, had a short eventing season this year, as their
first event was cancelled due to snow and the last 2 events Jim
would have gone to were in the fall, when his rider Beckie was
away at Fairhill and other events, trying to qualify with her own
horse. He managed to make six horse trials, and with an assortment
of good placings at Open Training level, Jim ended up 4th for the
Alberta Horse Trials High Point at year end for his level. Jim will be
going to Florida this coming winter from the end of January to the
end of April. He will be starting at Training but will be moving up to
Prelim and his owner Kim hopes do 1 or 2 CIC* events with him.
Homesick Angels Farm succeeded again in Open in-hand
competition. Rick Triplett’s 2009 IDSH filly by Manu Forti’s Touch
Down RID x Always Pleasing (TB) earned awards in Open Hunter
Breeding competition: NWSHBA year end Champion yearling filly,
and USEF/USHJA Zone 9 Hunter Breeding yearling Horse of the year.
Sweet Tater, Kate Triplett’s 2009 IDSH by Manu Forti’s Touch Down
RID x I.B. Paranoid(TB) also won awards in Open Hunter Breeding
competition: NWSHBA year end Reserve Champion Hunter Breeding
yearling filly, and USEF/USHJA Zone 9 Hunter Breeding yearling
Reserve Horse of the year. American Lace IDSH 2007 by Braveheart
RID x I.B. Paranoid (TB) won NWSHBA Year end Champion
Hunter Breeding 3 year old filly and USEF/USHJA Zone 9 Hunter
Breeding 3 Y/O Reserve Champion Horse of the Year.
Manu Forti’s Touch Down RID (Touch of the Blue’s x Kerryoak
Lady Dawn RID) was named 2010 Hunter Stallion of the Year for the
NWSHBA as a result of his daughters’ showings.
Elizabeth Taylor, owner of Oregon Irish Sport Horses, reports
that her three year old stallion Benmar NightHawk has been started
in under saddle work. He will be getting the basics of dressage
and preparing for next year’s approvals. The trainer is Bill Burke,
dressage instructor and judge, Alternate for the US team one year.
Tulla Gold RID gelding won his first event in BN at Rubicon HT,
then went on to The Maryland HT and again won 1st place! At
Waredaca Farm HT he placed 4th in Open Novice. At the Land
Rover USEA AEC Tulla Gold won the BN Championship….way to
go Tulla! After that he continued his eventing in the Novice division;
at Morven Park Fall HT, 2nd place; Waredaca HT and classic
Training 3 day Event, 3rd place; finishing up at the Virginia HT and
USEA area II Championships, 1st place in the Novice Championship!
Rebecca Farm hosted the first FEH classes in the NW, expectedly,
entrant numbers were small but Lucy Stevenson and Jess
Walker turned their youngsters out and did well. The FEH class will
be repeated again in 2011 so please consider bringing your 1,
2 or 3y/o horses to help this program grow here in the NW. The
NWSHBA is hoping to host in 2011 as well on the west side of the
Cascades, so watch for that and attend….Our horses are good
at this!
Rebecca Farm sent the Society a Thank You note for again
bringing our support and horses to their event. They boasted
the most ever spectators, in excess of 20,000! The attendance
of international competitors is something they hope to continue
as they build their event notoriety. The addition of The Event at
Rebecca Farm to the WEG qualifiers certainly put them in the right
direction to accomplish this goal. We as a breed really benefit
from continuing this relationship. Please help support it!
A big Thank You goes to Lyn Lindstrom for taking on the Chair
position for the Registration & Inspection Committee as requested
by the BOD.
It is always nice to hear what our horses are doing out
there and be able to report back to the Society. It helps keep the
Society working as a team to be able to share these accomplishments.
South East Region Annual Blarney report
Sue Rowdon, SER Chair
2010 was an interesting year in the Southeast Region.
The economy has affected us all when making breeding
decisions, marketing decisions, showing decisions
and the list goes on. In spite of this, 2010 has been a year of high
points and achievements.
Foxhunters started the year lamenting the snow and ice that
kept them home but remained active with the traditional summer
activities and have gotten a good start with beautiful fall weather
for the opening hunts.
The Future Event Horse series continues strong as a venue
to showcase our young horses. Recently a member (who owns
several pure and part bred IDs) told me that a neighbor who competed
in the FEH classes had told her, “I always thought that your
horses were exceptional examples of the breed, however seeing
so many others at the FEH, I realize that the ID and IDX’s are all very
nice horses.” Positive marketing for sure!
Eventing continues to grow with more members participating
and doing well. I’ve also noticed that more eventers are recogniz-
Region Reports (con’t) . . .
ing their horse’s Irish Draught blood and writing it on their entries
carries through to reading it in results pages.
We had another successful Upperville weekend. On Friday,
Brianne Sells and Brandy Greenwell generously hosted us for a very
informative clinic with Michael Kirwan and Tony Phillips. Sunday
morning’s classes, judged by Michael Kirwan, had fewer entries
than usual but we saw many new faces, both in the ring and on the
rail. What I hope was the beginning of a new tradition, was a delicious
tailgate after the classes were over. Sitting in the shade of the
old oak trees, with cool drinks and yummy snacks was only made
better by the opportunity to talk about, what else, Irish Draughts!
Many members spent time and effort preparing
for and participating in the Irish Draught events
at the World Equestrian Games. Since WEG is
featured elsewhere in this issue, I will only say that a huge amount
of hard work went into preparations and the demonstrations were
highlights of the Equine Village.
Once again the Annual show committee put on a fine show
and made a substantial profit. There were many positive comments
about the show; here are some of my favorites. “I loved the
opportunity to see so many Irish horses all in one place.” “Being
able to meet new people, put faces with names I’ve only seen
online, and have some face to face conversations, was worth the
effort to get there.” IMHO, a real home run was the barn tailgate
that led into the AGM. In years past we have had to pull members
from the barns to attend the AGM. This year, we took the AGM to
the members, voila, a quorum was had. Brilliant!
In discussions with members, the topic of marketing our horses
frequently comes up. Now, members are going together on
joint ads in the Chronicle of the Horse with plans for other publications.
As one member stated, this is certainly a case where the sum
of the parts adds up to far more than the whole.
Hopefully, things are looking up economy wise for all of us. I
have heard from breeders who had no 2010 foals but are expecting
for 2011. Others who skipped breeding in 2010 are signing
contracts for 2011. All positive signs.
I have been asking SER members to email me with their
thoughts about the Society and what they want to see for their
membership. What do they think the primary focus of the society
should be, as well as secondary focus. What do we do well and
what needs improvement. I look forward to continuing to hear
from the SER members and then working together on implementing
their suggestions.
2010 Year End Awards Results . . .
Congratulations and thank you to all who entered their horses for
YEA and USDF end of year awards. We are pleased to announce
this year’s winners. It was a pleasure to see new names among the
winners. Of course it is wonderful to welcome our old friends as well. Each
and every one of you have done a tremendous job of showcasing our Irish
Draught and Irish Draught Sport Horses throughout the US and Canada. Each
year, as we receive the entries both for USDF and YEA we run into the same
issues, so here are a few things to keep in mind for the 2011 showing season.
1. Owners must be current members of IDHSNA
2. All horses must be registered with IDHSNA
3. Horses must show under their IDHSNA registered name
4. All forms must be in by December 1st in order for be processed
JP Young RIDSH, owned and bred by Kleary
Field, LLC. Ridden by Lucinda Romero, as well as
trainers and junior riders.
JP Young (Jack) and I had a fabulous show
season in 2010. Starting out at 2’11” and 3’ my
goal was to make it to the Grand Prix arena at
Woodside, CA where the classes start at 3’7”.
My goal arena was the very one where I first saw
Jack’s sire compete when I was deciding if I would breed to him. In our last
show of 2010, Jack and I placed 2nd in the 3’9” class in the Grand Prix arena
against the professional riders.
It has been such a blessing to have raised this colt. His mom delivered him
into my lap and he was perfect. I can honestly say it is Jack’s jump that has made
me a better rider. And it is the constant love and adoration from Karen and me
that has made Jack the confident horse he is. As much as we love each other
and have super fun jumping and competing, Jack is grown up now and ready
to move on. Jack is set for his next human to make their dreams come true as
well. We are proud to offer JP Young for sale.
Today’s Irish Princess is a 4 year old RIDSH
that was started over fences in April of this year.
She attended her first rated hunter jumper show
two months later in June. She was shown in the
Kindergarten Hunters and did better than I could
have hoped. I would have been happy if she just
got around the course clean, but she came home
with a blue ribbon in her first over fences class of
her career (without shoes to top it off). She was
Kindergarten Hunter Champion and Long Stirrup Hunter Reserve Champion. We
look forward to seeing what she does in the future.
Well, we had another wonderful year. Stepping
up especially the dressage and moving up
in eventing. Next year will bring some changes.
My husband FINALLY gets his shot to shine. After
a LONG time of waiting he will be doing the
Trans Am Series of car racing, a longtime dream
for him. Therefore a role reversal occurs. All those
years when I was traveling for events and he was
at home base taking care of things... now I will be
at home, while he travels extensively for racing.
I board at farm that hosts a lot of USDF dressage shows, so we are working
on 3rd level work. Ricky has lovely canter work but we need to develop
that trot. Travel we have done in the past for all those events will not be in the
cards, although we will get in what events we can!!!! Therefore the focus will
Page 16
change; more dressage, probably more H/J shows, and events as we can. No
matter what, y’all will see us out there!!!!
Ballymoa is known at Oakdale Farm as Irish
since he was the first Irish horse at the farm and
the start of our love of Irish Horses. Irish is the
horse that students get to event when they are
having troubles with their horses or lost confidence.
Irish always gives them confidence
and puts a smile back on their faces. Irish is the
horse I pick to hunt when the jumping or footing
is trappy. I know that he will take care of me.
When a boarder’s horse won’t cross a creek, Irish is the lead horse that shows
them how. If that doesn’t work all you have to do is get behind them with Irish
and say push. He will knock them into the creek so that they have to cross!!!
Irish has heart. This is something you can’t teach and this is why we love him at
Oakdale.
and gorgeous, and has just gotten better as she
grows up. In showing for 2010, she has earned
points in Open Hunter Breeding and Dressage
Sporthorse Breeding competition: She is the
American Lace, Kate Triplett’s 2007 Irish
life, as she battled a severe infection and an
injury from her first days though her first month
of life. With the toughness and intelligence her
bloodlines bequeathed, she has overcome it all
and grown into a strong and beautiful three year
Top 20 Moments from WEG - Demonstrations . . .
by Sarah Hooper
1. Fleur Bryan: For those
who have not had the
pleasure of meeting Fleur
yet, she is truly one of a
kind. She was by far the
heart and soul of the Irish
effort at WEG. It began
as an idea in Ireland, and
after over two years, became
a reality. Throughout,
Fleur’s Irish brogue
and heavy wit helped us
all get through each day.
We could write a book
full of her colorful sayings.
FLEUR. Photo courtesy, Sharon Gaudet.
A true lover of horses,
especially Irish ones, and a friend to everyone who meets her.
Thank you, Fleur, for dragging me kicking and screaming into this
unforgettable experience. And a special thanks to her other half,
Debbie, for keeping our whole contingency fed, full of caffeine,
and holding down the fort for 16+ days (she already deserves a
medal for putting up with Fleur!).
2. Steeped in Luck and Tom
Dvorak: This duo brought
the house down the four
days they performed
their musical dressage
freestyle. There wasn’t
even standing room during
their performances,
and folks could be heard
talking about them all
throughout the park. We
were honored to have an
Olympian performing on
a purebred Irish Draught
stallion to spotlight the
caliber and versatility of
the breed. Tom’s wife, Ellen,
and Steeped in Luck’s
owners, Elizabeth and Keith Douglas, were also a total delight
and loads of fun.
We were also thrilled to have FEI Dressage rider Leslie Bean and
FEI World Champion Driver Sterling
Graburn as part of our Demo
team.
3. Gina Miles: While not competing
at WEG, Gina Miles (Olympic
silver medalist on Irish Sport
Horse, McKinlaigh) made a point
to come by during our second
demo block. Fleur was able to
bring her into the ring, where she
said hi to the crowd and shared
her love for the Irish breed with
the crowd. Gina stuck around to
sign autographs and say hi to the
demo team as well. What a delightful
person, superb athlete, and a special treat it was to have
her come by.
4. Dr. Pearse Lyons: For
those who don’t
know, Mr. Lyons is
the founder and
President of Alltech,
the title sponsor
for WEG 2010. Mr.
Lyons is also from
Ireland. So, needless
to say we were
thrilled and delighted
when he pulled
up to our stalls one
day in his Rolls Royce golf cart to drop off some of our volunteers
he’d given a lift to after seeing them with an Irish flag. He stayed
for a few minutes to visit with us and congratulated us on a good
job promoting the Irish horses and Ireland.
5. Meet & Greet:
Organizing the
demonstrations
was quite an undertaking,
and every
day brought
new challenges
and problems.
Amidst the chaos,
I would find
peace each day
when the demo’s
were over and
our team headed
into the “Meet
& Greet” corral.
I would stand
at the rail and
watch as hoards
of kids and adults
alike came to the
fence to pet our
horses and talk
with the riders.
So many people
don’t know about
the Irish horse
breed, and this
was an unbeatable
chance for
them to not only
see, but interact,
with the horses
and really appreciate their versatility, athleticism, and temperament.
It was a moment of great pride for me, for the breed and
my demo team, and made me remember each day why we took
on this bear of an event.
6. Relay Race: Fleur finally convinced us in the third block to do a relay
race at the end of the demo. Three Connemaras versus three
Irish Draught/Sport Horses, doing a line of jumps with a baton
and passing it to the next. This turned out to be a huge crowd
2010 Yearbook - T he Blarney

Top 20 Moments from WEG - Demonstrations . . .
pleaser and exciting part of the demo. The ponies and horses
were neck in neck! But, my favorite moment came when our farthest
traveling volunteer, Wouter van Voorthuysen from Holland,
grabbed the microphone and told the crowd, “I am Wouter. I
am from Holland. We cannot lose! Go horses!”
7. Grand Prix Jumping:
We were so fortunate
to be able to
showcase Grand Prix
jumping horses during
several of our demos.
Ashley Bailey-Classen
brought three of her
Irish Sport Horses
from Texas, two of
which showed their
stuff, soaring over
the top of the standards.
If we’d have
had bigger wings,
they could’ve done 5
feet+! In the last block, Amy Hunter and Cradilo put on an extremely
impressive jumping demonstration, showing what a purebred
Irish Draught stallion can do! The crowd was floored and
interest abounded over this great duo who are currently competing
on the Grand Prix circuit. What a special treat to watch
these horses fly.
8. Picnic Table: One of
the Connemara ponies
brought a plastic picnic
table to jump during
their demonstrations.
Not to be outdone,
the Irish Draught/Sport
Horse demo team decided
to take it on as
well. Several of our
brave demo team horse
and rider combinations
took on the picnic table
jump, to the delight of
the crowd!
9. Limerick Harriers: Bless
Jim McGinty for loaning
us his Limerick Harriers
foxhunting video to run
in the booth on our big
flat screen TV. If you
haven’t seen it, you are
missing out. Call Jim, he
will probably send you
a copy. This video literally
stopped people in their
tracks, and they couldn’t
believe what real Irish foxhunting,
as seen from a
helmet cam, looked like.
Horses were jumping giant
ditches, riders were falling
in the water, children to
Page 20
grandpas alike were out there. This video made so many people
stop to ask and talk to the folks in our booth, and you could hear
people around the park saying, “you need to go by that Irish
booth and see that video.” So, and big thank you to Jim for that
contribution, and for all those who made the booth a resounding
success.
10. Pat Parelli: Everyone who
is anyone in the horse
world was at WEG. We,
as demonstrators, were
in the same barn at the
clinicians. So, on a daily
basis we rubbed elbows
with the likes of Clinton
Anderson and Pat
Parelli and John Lyons,
amongst a crazy variety
of other demonstrators
like the Icelandic horse
and the Indian tent peggers.
It wasn’t unusual to
see a man come around
the corner standing on
two horses who were
dressed in metallic armor,
or a train of miniature
horses. We saw it all! Pat
Parelli took a particular interest in our demo horses, stopping
Connie Arthur to talk to her about Bridon Beale Street, and John
Lyons hilariously tried to do dressage moves with Tom Dvorak
and Steeped in Luck in the demo warmup arena. Pat also was
nice enough to invite us to his evening BBQ on several occasions.
Fun times.
11. Bridon Beale Street’s Grand Exit: During one of our demonstrations,
I’m in the middle of the arena, Fleur is commentating, and
all of the sudden Connie Arthur and Bridon Beale Street go stand
in the corner. Fleur tries to beckon them out to keep jumping
and showing off for the crowd. Connie’s shaking her head “no,”
meanwhile; I’m panicking trying to figure out what’s wrong. Then,
she proceeds to turn Liam around, take off at a canter, and jump
OUT of the demo arena and head for the barns. I’m standing
there with my jaw on the ground; Fleur is begging Connie to
come back. She does turn around, and jump back into the arena,
to the cheers and laughter of the crowd. After the demo,
Fleur tells me they had secretly planned the whole thing, they just
forgot to let me in on it …. Cause why would the coordinator
need to know?? Ha!
12. Irish Ambassador
to the USA:
We were thrilled
to have the Irish
A m b a s s a d o r
to the United
States, Mr. Michael
Collins,
and his lovely
wife visit our
booth and attend
one of our
demonstrations.
Mr. Collins commended Fleur and everyone involved for doing
such a great job representing and promoting Ireland and its horses.
13. William Micklem: Author of the newly released “Complete
Horse Riding Manual,” former national coach for the Irish Horse
Board, trainer/director
at Gleneagles’ Mark Phillips
Equestrian Center,
eventing guru, and television
commentator and
contributor to equestrian
journals … it was an
honor for us to have Mr.
Micklem lecture at WEG,
stop by our booth and
visit with our Demo team and volunteers. He is truly a legend, an
expert horseman, and an outstanding individual.
14. Mechanical Penning Horse:
While WEG was a lot of fun,
it was tiring and stressful.
So, for stress relief, we always
ended up going to the
mechanical penning horse.
Everyone seems to have a
video or picture of themselves
on this thing. And,
let me tell you, it felt pretty
real whizzing and whipping
around after the little mechanical
calf!
15. Rosemount Farm: Fonda Eigle, who was part of the Connemara
demonstration team with her stallion, Spuddy, was kind enough
to open her farm to us as off-site stabling and practice site. What
no one was prepared for was
the moment we pulled up to
her iron gates and drove onto
a magnificent farm, hundreds
of acres of rolling grass hills and
fenced paddocks, a beautiful
mansion, and a barn fit for
king’s horses. No one wanted
to leave. Aside from the gloriousness
of the property itself,
Fonda was an impeccable and
organized hostess and we can’t
thank her enough.
16. Wine & Cheese: The second
Saturday night, the Irish Village
hosted a Wine & Cheese at the
park near our booths. We had
a variety of guests, from dignitaries,
to competitors, to demonstrators,
to park personnel. A
good time was definitely had by
all. While I won’t into the details,
I’ll just mention that Irish feather
boas and Mardi Gras beads
made an appearance!
Debbie riding the Mechanical Penning
Horse. Photo: Sarah McMullen.
17. Feemsters: If Fonda
provided off site stabling
for the horses, Paul
and Debbie Feemster
provided it to many
of our volunteers and
demo team. They also
have a spectacular
property and home,
and opened it up to
us for dinner, wine, and
places to sleep. People
came and went over
the 3 week period, and we had some of our best times sitting
around the table, telling stories and recounting the days adventures.
The next morning, we’d all carpool to the park, and a
whole new round would begin. Thank you Feemsters, for all
you did! Along with your beautiful BenMar Bella Blue, who did
double duty under saddle and carriage for many of the demos.
18. The Irish Village: It was the heart
and hub of our whole crew at
WEG. Bill Appel and Lyn Lindstrom,
with the help of Nadia
Cook-Grisewood and Fleur,
made this IDHSNA booth come
to life. It turned out to be a
lovely tribute to the breed, full
of information, with fun bags
and keepsakes books for spectators.
We had a ton of interest
the whole time. Next to us were
the boys at Goresbridge Horse
Sales, where a large chunk of
Olympic and National level
competition horses come from.
The Donahues kept us laughing.
Nadia and US Eventing Team vet
Brendan Furlong had their booth
next to the Connemara Society.
We were smack dab in the middle
of everything, and enjoyed
meeting folks from around the
world and sharing our love for all
things related to Irish horses with
them. Great job to everyone
that had a hand in the Village.
19. WEG Itself: While I didn’t have
a whole lot of spare time, I did
manage to sneak away to view
a few of the events. Our demo
passes got us in to all the complexes
for free, and we were
welcome to sit in any open
seat. So, I was thrilled to watch
Dressage and Show Jumping
from the front row. We also
were able to get back in the
warm up arenas, and watch
these amazing competitors up
close and personal, schooling
before they went on the big stage. Unforgettable. And then there was our crazy weather. Freezing and raining one day, spectacular the next,
then unbearably hot. We went through all four seasons in 16 days.
20. The Demo Team & Volunteers: Last but not least, the greatest thing I will take away from the WEG experience is the wonderful people I met and
worked with. Our demo horses, riders, and their families, worked so hard to get ready for WEG, make the trip, and pull off phenomenal performances.
Our volunteers stood on their feet and talked for hours and helped with setup and takedown and move in and
move out. They also
made the trip at
their expense, and
their huge effort
and wonderful attitudes
are hugely
appreciated. I felt
so privileged to get
to know each and
every one of our
“team,” and look forward
to being lifelong
friend and seeing
them throughout
the years. My deepest
thanks.
Now, who’s up for a trip to France for 2014 WEG??!
Thank You WEG Team 2010 . . .
The AllTech World Equestrian Games 2010, held at the Kentucky
Horse Park in Lexington, really was the experience of a lifetime
for those of us able to attend and be a part of it through the Irish
Village, IDHSNA booth in it, or the Demonstrations associated with them.
We were there for all 16 days of the Games, including a few days on either
end for setup and takedown.
Each day our Demo team performed either a half hour or one hour
Demonstration, sometimes combined with the Connemaras. They all
came off spectacularly, highlighting the versatility and broad talents of our
group of horses and riders/drivers. All the while, WEG was happening
around us. The best in the world competed at Dressage, Show Jumping,
Eventing, Para-Equestrian, Reining, and Vaulting. Clinicians and other Demonstrators
abounded. It was horse heaven!
Our booth and the Irish Village in general were a big hit with the
spectators, and we feel we really made huge strides in promoting, marketing,
and educating the Irish Horses to the public. And we had fun, made
lasting memories and friendships, while doing it! It all would not have
been possible without the huge effort of those who volunteered their
time, effort, blood, sweat, and tears.
2011 IDHSNA Stallion Service Auction Offerings (con’t) . . .
GROGAN’S HIGH FIDELITY RIDSH (Approved by IDHSNA) by Snowford Bellman RID
out of Reilly’s Fianna RIDSH (First Class). Owned by Sarah Bright-Phillips, Bell Tower Stud, NC.
For the discerning sporthorse breeder, Grogan’s High Fidelity is a unique blend of irish and warmblood pedigrees
and is a fascinating sire. With top class jumping and dressage lines from his Oldenburg/Selle Francais
damsire and the same from his irish pedigree, HiFi delivers the athlete you are looking to produce. On top of
scope, movement and conformation, HiFi produces outstanding temperments in his offspring.
Kilronan’s Glenstone RID (Approved by IDHSNA)
by O’Leary’s Irish Diamond RID out of Kilbline RID (Annaghdown Star). Owned by Kilronan Farm, Larry and
Michelle Robbins, VA.
Born 18 April 2006; he is a coppery chestnut with tons of chrome, a white flame that travels from his forehead to
his nose and three white legs. Stony currently measures 15.3 hh and has 9.5 inches of bone. His best features are
his neck, shoulders, and gorgeous rear end. Stony has spectacular movement and balance; his collected canter
looks like he is waltzing (as if he hears music playing) and yet he can cut hairpin turns that are unbelievable. Stony
loves people and loves showing, he is the kind of horse people love to watch in a show ring.
Macs Blue Erin RID (Approved by IDHSNA)
by Touch of the Blues RID out of Pride of Erin RID (Ben Purple). Owned by Cynthia Lurix, TX.
Macs Blue Erin is a wonderful stallion that is starting a career in Jumping where he seems to be in his element.
At twelve he is still sound as most five year olds. Mac is the king of the barn with an enormous personality that
he passes on to his foals. It amazes us that such a large powerfully built animal can be so coordinated. Flying
changes and tight turns are no problem for Mac. We love the foals he has produced for us so much that parting
with them has been a terrible problem. Check our website at www.crowndale.com to see how some of his
very talented progeny are doing with their equally adoring owners.
Maggies Irish Rebel RID (Approved by IDHSNA)
by Irish Rover RID out of Maggies Last RID (Glenagyle Rebel). Owned by Cynthia Lurix, TX.
Maggie’s Irish Rebel “Dublin” is just embarking on his show career with Mark Sleeper. He is being trained for
Dressage as a foundation for eventing. Dublin is an extraordinarily sweet and intelligent stallion who has a lot
of impulsion and energy and athleticism. We are delighted to have him in our barn and look forward to
breeding our mares to him. Dublin is co-owned by James Marek DVM in Bellville TX who specializes in
Equine reproduction. More of Dublin can be seen at www.crowndale.com.
SNOWFORD BELLMAND RID (Approved by IDHSNA, IDHS-GB)
by Slievenamon RID out of Snowford Harebell RID (Skippy). Owned by Tony Phillips, BellTower Stud, NC.
Snowford Bellman is one of the best purebred irish draught sires available worldwide. He produces outstanding
stock whether bred pure or crossed with a wide variety of performance breeds. Athleticism, trainability
and outstanding conformation are Bellman’s stamps. His stock compete as eventers, hunters, jumpers, dressage,
fox hunters and driving horses with great success. An ideal choice for professionals and amateurs, you
won’t know which you love more - the talent or the personality.
Tors Murphy McGinty RID (Approved by IDHSNA)
by Roma Diamond Skip RID out of Roma Forest Fox RID (Silver Jasper). Owned by Joseph de Parasis.
Tors Murphy McGinty is a 2001 Grey Registered Irish Draught Stallion that stands
IDHSNA Annual Show Summary (con’t) . . .
In-Hand Championship, and Travis and Sharon
Boothe’s Tapestry’s Foxy Image shown
by Karen Evans to win the Partbred In-Hand
Championship.
“The Best” but most participants summoned
a little Irish resolve and duly noshed their
way through the barns. The AGM provided
worthwhile discussions which will be covered
elsewhere in the yearbook. The silent
auction and banquet were even more fun
than last year with an exciting development.
Travis and Sharon Boothe’s Tapestry’s Foxy Image,
shown by Karen Evans won the Partbred In-Hand
Championship.
In the Jumper Divisions, Kilronan’s
Glenstone secured the Puddle
Jumper’s Championship with Lyric’s
Irish Lad jumping to the Reserve Championship.
Kaelin Creange piloted Lyric’s Irish Lad
for owner Kathleen Comeau and went on to
win the Green Jumper Championship, with
Terry Adcock’s Bally Moa winning the Reserve
Championship with Emily Schlake riding.
For the Overall Jumper Championship
it was again Lyric’s Irish Lad with Kilronan’s
Glenstone picking up Reserve.
In the Combined Tests Leslie Davis’
Kaelin Creange piloted Lyric’s Irish Lad for owner
Kathleen Comeau to Overall Jumper Champion.
MFF Caribbean Blue, ridden by April Trimmer,
won the Novice Level Championship,
and Lian An Capell, ridden and owned by
Terry Adcock, was Reserve Champion. Guy
DeCorte’s entry Tulla Gold, ridden by Heidi
Wardle, was Training Level Champion. Lian
An Capell was back with Terry Adcock to
claim another Reserve Championship. The
Overall Combined Test Champion was Tulla
Gold, ridden by Heidi Wardle. Lian An Capell
and Terry Adcock clinched the Reserve
Championship.
Guy DeCorte’s Tulla Gold, ridden by Heidi Wardle.
was the Overall Combined Test Champion.
Special Awards included the Snowford
Bellman Horse & Handler Award going
to young Jamie Hall who inspired the
judges with her dedication and showmanship.
Susan Jensen collected the distance
award bringing Celtic Moon RID and Dandelion
Moorland Heather ID all the way from
Blustery Chicago with Janeen Pasquill and
her Whispering Gaelic Farm’s Lite Touch IDSH
making the trek from Michigan!
As if there wasn’t enough action going
on in the show ring to keep competitors,
grooms, owners and spectators alike
busy from dusk ‘til dawn, there were even
more activities! First was a clinic given by
judges Denis Dullea and Michael Kirwan to
educate participants on the Irish Draught in
general and how it is to be shown in hand
specifically. Blackberry Ridge Farm and Corrine
McCrae presented Ballygrace Rebel ID
as the young horse who could be schooled
to show like a veteran and coincidentally,
his big brother, Winmaur Sargeant Pepper
RID was presented by Tony Phillips for Bell
Tower Stud as the seasoned show horse.
The tailgate party held in the barns immediately
preceding the AGM was a rousing
success, whether judged on participants,
deliciousness or general good craic. The
award for the finest spread went to Texas -
that is Ann and Ann of Ann O’Donnell’s Top-
Gun Stables. It was truly a task to sample the
fares at every stop to determine which was
Anyone who helped set the hunter or
jumper courses will certainly claim those
evenings as highlights of the weekend, particularly
the fine driving of Mrs. Sue Holland,
commandeering a golf cart full of fake flowers
to make sure every fence was properly
filled.
As always, the South East Region put
on a fabulous event. Participants and spectators,
volunteers and judges were happy
with how well the weekend went and the
quality of horses put forward. The ante’s
been upped again for the Central Region in
2011!
FEH Three Year Old Champion, Windfield Touch of
2011
Looking Forward...
While Roxie recovered from injuries,
(beautifully, thank you!) Top Gun Stables
helped spread the word about IDHSNA
at Greenwood Horse Trials, American
Eventing Championships, IDHSNA National
Show (where we won top honors for
tailgating, anks for your support!),
World Equestrian Games and
Virginia Horse Trials. We helped sponsor
IDHSNA awards at Greenwood and
published an article about the project
in e Blarney. Highlight of the year:
getting recognized in the Atlanta airport
as "the Irish Draught lady!"
2010
Looking Back...
Top Gun Stables will be sponsoring
FEH classes at Greenwood and
Pin Oak Horse Trials and helping to
raise money for the IDHSNA to
sponsor USEA FEH classes nationally.
Roxie will be back in the show ring and
headed for inspection. We'll be back out
spreading Irish Draught Horse information
and fun at regional and national events.
Congratulations to the IDHSNA for a great
year and best wishes for the year to come!
Additional News . . .
Seeking a Volunteer Coordinator: Are you a Volunteer’s Volunteer? Your Board
is looking for one great volunteer - to be the point of contact for all the other volunteers. This
person should be organized and friendly. Details are not finalized so the Volunteer Coordinator
can help with the job description, but some expected duties would be:
• Create and distribute a Volunteer Form - members can tell about their interests and
experiences, time available, etc to help match the volunteer to the job.
• Serve as resource for general information on all committees
• Follow-up to ensure members and committees are fully connected.
Please contact your regional chair if you are interested.
IDHSNA Registered Prefix Policy . . .
Effective 3/17/05
The IDHSNA will record, for a fee, the unique prefix to be used by a breeder when naming horses bred by him. Prefixes must be applied for through
the IDHSNA office.
• A Registered Prefix may be registered for a one-time charge and
cannot be used by another person without the written consent
of the registered owner or his or her executors.
• The Registered Prefix is for the exclusive use of the breeder and
may precede, follow or be used anywhere in the name of any
horse bred by the owner.
• The Registered Prefix is considered part of the horses registered
name.
• The Registered Prefix can be used in any/all IDHS(NA) Studbooks
or Registries.
• Registered Prefixes must be unique and distinguishable from all
other Registered Prefixes; and cannot solely be made of obviously
descriptive Irish wording ”Shamrock”, “Clover”, etc. If these
words are part of a farm name or business, the obviously descriptive
Irish word/name and one or more additional words/
names must be combined to create a unique prefix.
• The Registration Office ensures that only the registered user may
use that prefix when applying to the registry for a horse’s name.
• A Registered Prefix that is pronounced the same as one already
registered but has different spelling will not be allowed.
• Prefixes known to be used or registered in Ireland and Great Britain
will not be approved.
• Profane, or overtly offensive prefixes will not be allowed.
• Only members in good standing may apply for a Registered Prefix.
• The IDHSNA shall publish a list of Registered Prefixes at least once
a year.
• The Registration Officer shall keep the list of Registered Prefixes.
The Board of the IDHSNA reserves the right to modify the rules and
processes at any time for prefix retention.
