Sport On the fast Lane One of her most successful years of her still young career as an event rider now lies behind her: Sandra Auffahrt won team gold and the individual bronze medal in eventing at the Olympic Games in London last year. She celebrated her success at the Bundeschampionate in Warendorf four weeks later. Her parents are Bärbel and Karl-Heinz Auffarth and hold a significant share in their daughters successes. They are passionate Hanoverian horse breeders. By Britta Züngel ven six months after the grandiose performance at the Olympic Games London is still E within close reach at the farm of Family Auffarth. A life-size golden horse sculpture with a purple colored ribbon greets visitors from afar when they come to the small equestrian facility in Bergedorf near Ganderkesee that is located less than 30 kilometers west of Bremen. The sculpture was a present from the Ganter ART art club. “The Olympic Games were very special!” Everyone agrees on that. “The absolute highlight however was the reception upon our return to Ganderkesee and the trip to Bergedorf,” says Sandra Auffarth. Her fame level has increased considerably since her triumph at the Games. “It is not as bad as Robbie Williams though,” she says with a smile. Now fan mail needs to be answered and numerous appointments must be met. “I have learned a lot of new things.” The bestowal of the Silver Laurel Leaf by the President of Germany, Joachim Gauck, at the Bellevue Palace in Berlin was especially impressive. Talent, ambition and discipline distinguish the 26- year event rider. She also has parents that support her whole-heartedly whenever they can and with that give her the necessary strength and peace great successes demand. Sandra Auffarth grew up with horses on the parental farm. She began her career riding an event pony when she was ten years old and traveled to the “Goldene Schärpe” that is a prize for pony riders in Germany only one year after her cross-country debut. The courageous girls great talent attracted attention and the exemplary support system of event riders set in. “Eventing is a team sport and that was a very nice experience,” Bärbel Auffarth remembers. Things started happening from then on. She switched from riding ponies to horses with the horse Carlos. The dark bay was a result of the parental breeding program. Karl-Heinz Auffarth discovered his dam, St. Pr. mare Minerva by Matcho AA/Lombard (breeder: Rudolf and Reinhard Bösch, Bülkau) at the breeder’s barn. Sandra Auffarth rode Carlos as a four-year old in suitability classes and then later in jumper and event classes. She even qualified him for the Bundeschampionate. “Carlos strongly influenced my career path. I rode him through all the levels from A-level classes to international 3-Star-competitions,” Sandra Auffarth explains. They celebrated their first huge success in 2005 when they won the German Championships for Young Riders in Hohenberg.
