noteworthy ACHIEVEMENTS Mock Trial Takes State Congratula� ons to the Sku� Catholic Mock Trial Team for winning the State Championship this past December! The team now heads to Philadelphia to compete for the Na� onal Championship. Sku� Catholic's Mock Trial Team has won two state championships and a state runner-up trophy in the past four years. Sku� Catholic is also the only Catholic school to win the state championship in the 27 year history of the compe� � on. The team is coached by SC teacher Mary Meyer as well as Pat and Judy Borchers who have had children graduate from SC. In par� cular, congratula� ons to the following students for their hard work and great achievement: Ma� Meyer Tanner Sorensen Sco� Bullins Danielle Desa Haley Gordman Maggie Hoff man Michael Judah Tom Knoblauch-Rankin Professional Learning Communi� es Focus on Good Old Common Sense Solu� ons Within the Omaha Metro area the term “learning community” is certainly a conversa� on starter which carries with it a poli� cal charge. However, the concept of a learning community is nothing new to the fi eld of educa� on, a profession that requires constant collabora� on between teachers, students, parents, administrators and the community at large. Eff ec� ve schools and school systems embrace the proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child,” and they work � relessly to build suppor� ve communi� es. Sku� Catholic is certainly a learning community – a place where students and teachers, families and friends, community members and visitors feel a tangible sense of caring and welcome, faith and learning, excitement and success. However, there is always room to improve, there are always ways to grow and become stronger. For this reason Sku� Catholic has embraced the Professional Learning <strong>Community</strong> (PLC) model of school improvement. The PLC model can be described as a return to good old common sense. In our current day of constant educa� onal reform and persistent debate on innumerable theories of learning, the PLC school improvement model asks schools to center their a� en� on on four very tangible ques� ons regarding student learning: • What knowledge and skills should every student acquire as a result of this school, this department, this course, this unit of instruc� on, and this lesson? • How will we know when each student has acquired the essen� al knowledge and skills? • How will we respond when some students do not learn? • How will we respond when some students have clearly achieved the intended outcomes? Working as small collabora� ve groups during every late start school day, Sku� Catholic faculty members have started the process of defi ning and refi ning essen� al learning outcomes. In future years each PLC will be establishing valid internal assessment systems to measure student learning, as well as crea� ng systems of enrichment and extension for students who require a boost or an added challenge in order to meet their poten� al. In addi� on to this important curriculum work, Sku� Catholic has also organized every staff member into a PLC group to study and enhance the school’s vision, mission and daily prac� ce. PLCs dedicated to major components of Sku� Catholic such as: Catholic Iden� ty, Vision and Mission, Teaching and Learning, Classroom Management and Discipline, Recruitment, have been researching best prac� ce and developing new strategies for improvement. Several groups have already piloted improvement strategies and have felt the synergy of working collabora� vely for the be� erment of the school and for the benefi t of our students. PLC literature states, “Working together to build shared knowledge on the best way to achieve goals and meet the needs of clients is exactly what professionals in any fi eld are expected to do” (www.allthingsplc.com). Through our eff orts as a Professional Learning <strong>Community</strong>, the faculty and staff of Sku� Catholic embrace the challenge of improving our ability to meet the needs of our students so they can achieve their poten� al as students, ci� zens, and members of the Faith community. ~ 6 ~ SkyHawk Soccer Enjoys New Prac� ce Field The Sku� Catholic High School campus just got a li� le bit greener. Royal Field, a new prac� ce soccer fi eld on the southwest corner of the school's property, is ready to go come this spring for the boys and girls soccer programs. It meets one of the school's visionary needs as six teams were compe� ng for prac� ce and playing � me on just two fi elds. This was all made possible through the philanthropic eff ort of Sku� Catholic parents, Sco� and Trish Royal. Boys soccer coach, Rob Meyers, says the new fi eld will add to the fl exibility and quality performance of each prac� ce and game. "With six teams, our space for prac� ce was very limited. This new fi eld will give us the space we need to con� nue to be successful and off er soccer to the Sku� Catholic student-athletes at all levels. The extra space will also help reduce wear and tear on our prac� ce fi elds as football also uses them in the fall. We are extremely grateful to the Royal family for their generous contribu� on." A ribbon cu� ng ceremony will take place in March before the season begins to honor the Royals and open the gates to the fi eld. "Both of our children have grown spiritually and academically at Sku� Catholic High School. In our son's freshman year he tried out for the soccer team and made varsity. Even though in his fi rst year he had limited playing � me he learned a lot about the integrity and tradi� ons of the Sku� Catholic soccer program. It has been our joy to watch Tay become part of that traditon. A� er being around the premier program for four years we are honored to be able to give back and help those tradi� ons con� nue." The accomplishments by our studentathletes have been made possible by the coaches' high standards of excellence, along with the fi elds and facili� es to prac� ce as a team. Thanks to the Royal family, the Sku� Catholic campus has created space needed to give our student-athletes more prac� ce opportuni� es to hone their soccer skills. Let's play!
2008-2009 Annual Report The things that are most important to us are brought into focus when we are faced with challenges. I o� en stress to my children that the most important things in our lives are our faith and our family. For my family, as for many others, Sku� Catholic High School has become an important part of both. Sku� Catholic has helped my children to grow in and live out their faith in a very forma� ve � me of their lives. It has allowed us to journey together through their high school years as part of the incredible community that is the Sku� Catholic family. What a blessing Sku� Catholic has been and con� nues to be for us and for so many students and families! The economic challenges of this past year have required Sku� Catholic to focus on the most effi cient use of resources possible while con� nuing to provide an excellent high school experience for our students in an environment that enables them to grow academically, spiritually, and personally. Sku� Catholic has not only con� nued to fulfi ll this mission, but through wise stewardship and the generosity of many Sku� Catholic families, improvements were made to the facili� es and funds were added to the school’s endowment. The faculty and administra� on are to be commended for all that was accomplished in a very challenging year!
