Reducing VOC emissions through product development<br />
The case stories here are just two examples of how product development can have a direct impact on<br />
reducing harmful VOC emissions.<br />
Case story: advanced solution increases production without increasing emissions<br />
Ultra-High Solids and Speed (UHSS) is a unique protective system for steel surfaces that reduces the<br />
number of coatings required from three to two, and significantly cuts VOC emissions compared to similar<br />
systems.<br />
Using two coatings with low VOC content, UHSS produces just 399 kilograms of VOC per 10,000m²<br />
compared to around 1,375 kilograms for a standard three-coat system. In addition, it requires less<br />
waiting time between coats – as well as fewer cans, thinners and cleaners – which enables manufacturers<br />
to increase production without increasing emissions.<br />
We originally developed UHSS for a wind tower manufacturer in Sweden, however it can be used in a large<br />
number of industries. The system was granted a patent by the European Patent Office in September <strong>2012</strong>.<br />
