Case story: new versions of existing products help lower VOC emissions
We released new high-solids versions of some of our existing antifouling products in 2012 to help customers
reduce VOC emissions from their operations. The products – Hempel GLOBIC, OCEANIC and OLYMPIC – are
all anti-fouling coatings that stop fouling organisms attaching to a ship’s hull.
A major concern for ocean-going vessels, fouling organisms, such as barnacles and biological slime,
cause extra drag in the water. As a result, the vessel requires more power to move – which consumes
more fuel and leads to higher emissions. GLOBIC, Hempel’s top antifouling coating, uses nano-capsule
technology to give the hull a smooth finish that fouling organisms cannot attach to.
As well as cutting emissions by reducing the amount of fuel a vessel uses, the new high-solids products
release less VOC into the atmosphere than their predecessors. Hempel GLOBIC 9000 for example,
contains 15 per cent less VOC than the previous product, GLOBIC NCT.
