INTRODUCTION
Amidst the wooded grounds stands our dear
Alma Mater, where we entered this world of
learning and character blending a few short
years ago. "Voices gay of youth and maiden”
have echoed through the halls throughout this
eventful year as we have trod upward in our
search for knowledge. As we leave and look to
the future, we know that happy memories of the
campus will always remind us of our classmates,
games won on the hardwood, graduation ceremony,
and the roses on the arbor in the center
of the campus lawn.
W e of the Staff present to you your 1960
MNEMOSYNE.
As you peruse it in years to
come, may your mind be flooded with these
meaningful memories and may you be able to
say, " 1960 was THE year in my life.’’
3

DEDICATION
We, the Mnemosyne staff of 1960, dedicate
this yearbook to Mr. Richard Klopfenstein, coach
and athletic director of Huntington College.
His personality and testimony are a credit to the
college.
Good luck, Coach, and may the Lord richly
bless you.

RICHARD E. KLOPFENSTEIN
Mr. Kolpfenstein is originally from Allen County, Indiana, and
is a graduate of Huntington College. He holds an A.B. from
H.C. and a P.E. from Indiana University.
The Coach enjoys hunting, golfing and officiating at basketball
games. He is an active worker in the Red Cross Volunteer
Chapter.
We, the students of H.C., appreciate our faculty as
individuals and as capable instructors.

DR. ELMER BECKER
Dr. Elmer Becker has served as president
serves on many committees and projects
on the campus and in connection with
churches of the United Brethren denomination.
His religious convictions serve as
a beacon for those desiring to find the
Christian way of life. Dr. Becker, H. C.
graduate w ith the class of 1923, understands
the counseling needed by students.
He is always prepared to help those who
come to him.
UNDERCLASSMEN

UNDERCLASSMEN
N o campus being complete without the "green beanie touch,
we introduced the Freshman class to H. C. in grand style. The
Sophomores, a group of nerve-racked individuals prior to the
annual Little River debut, have now settled down to a year of
education. Raising money is keeping the Junior class members
occupied, since they are responsible for the annual Junior-Senior
reception.

CHEERLEADERS
Holding pep sessions and displaying signs, the cheerleaders give vitality to
the fans and build school spirit. After several groups auditioned to be this year's
cheerleaders, the athletic committee voted for Sue Shelhamer, H untington freshman,
Judy Harpham , Pleasant Lake, Indiana sophomore; and Linda Luther, Fort
Pierce, Florida sophomore, to lead them in their game enthusiasm.
Did he make it?

BASEBALL
ORGANIZATIONS

ORGANIZATIONS
Campus organizations, which give students opportunities for
social development and poise, are an integral part of a life of
learning. These organizations, holding meetings at specified
times, give to a student that which he has invested in them.
Leadership qualities are given good soil in which to grow in
these co-curricular activities— a fact that has great potential
value in it.

SCIENCE CLUB
The purpose of the Science Club is to make general scientific and mathematical ideas comprehensible
to the average person. Members often have a science or math background, but all that
is required is an interest in these subjects.
ACTIVITIES

ACTIVITIES
"Variety” is the term which best applies to our college activities.
W hether selling sweat shirts or banquet tickets, dressed in sports
or formal attire, we are earning dividends which will be used to
improve Huntington College. Hard W ork? Yes, but we think
it’s fun.

WASHINGTON BANQUET
The social highlight of the school is the W ashington
Banquet, initiated in 1920 as being a costume affair
simulating George and M artha characters. Presently
it is more formal. The Banquet is under the
direction of the Student A ffairs Committee, Miss Irene
Be rgdall, chairman. This year the H untington Room
of the H otel LaFontaine was chosen as the Banquet
site.
Dr. Gerald Jones, minister of the W ayne Street M ethodist
WORK DAY
Over $1,400 was earned by the industrious
H. C. students on this year’s
W ork Day. The money will be used to
build new tennis courts for the school.
After the hard day’s work, the students
enjoyed an evening of good food
and entertainment.
Jack Slusser turned out to be quite a cider salesman.
CLEAN-UP DAY
Clean-up Day at H. C. is synonymous
with rakes, shovels, axes, mops, tired
students and Profs, who band together
to make our campus clean.
Jim Wiley, David Myers, Larry Handwork, Bob Fulton, and Prof. W inters worked
hard to make the front of the campus sparkle.
Let’s get those cinders loaded, men.
STUDENT LOUNGE
The Student Lounge is one of the major attractions of our campus. Faculty and
students gather here for discussions of everything from last night’s ballgame to
the fall of the Bourbons and classes for the next day.
Mary Chupp, Helen Howery, Marlyn Garver, and
Dee W ust fill the orders taken at the lunch
counter.
The lounge is a wonderful place for relaxing over
a cup of coffee before the next class.
HAYRIDE
It was cold! The wintery evening of October
10, 1959, was the time of the annual Junior
Hayride. The group bumped along to the Markle
Boy Scout cabin where several of the students
entertained. Pictured in one of the wagons are
