Critical Days of Summer: It’s personal!
By Kevin Ennis
1st Special Operations Wing
Ground Safety
The Critical Days of
Summer campaign is an
annual safety campaign
starting on Memorial Day
weekend and running
through Labor Day weekend.
The Air Force theme
for this year’s campaign
is titled “It’s Personal.”
According to the Air
Force Safety Center, the
objective of the 2012 CDS
campaign is to call attention
to the tragic loss or
injury of Airmen during
the summertime, and
to make Airmen realize
that safety is personal
for them, their families,
friends and co-workers.
commentary
Looking at mishap
numbers explains why
our summer safety campaign
is critical. Since
fiscal year 2002, the Air
Force has experienced
218 fatalities during the
CDS; 201 off-duty, 17
on-duty. The tragedy of
each preventable mishap
and our recent uptick in
ground safety incidents
illustrates the continuing
need to embed and highlight
safety and personal
risk management principles
during this year’s
safety campaign.
To support and foster a
proactive summer safety
program, the goal is that
everyone emphasizes
the Air Force’s “It’s Personal”
approach. Make a
commitment to look out
for family, friends and
co-workers this summer.
Make a commitment to
care for the people you
encounter every day,
because, it’s personal - it
is this personal commitment
that allows us to
get involved and make a
difference.
The chances to communicate
with those
around us and to incorporate
risk management
principles into activities
we are involved with is
our real challenge. Each
of us must help others
practice safety discipline
and make sound personal
risk management decisions
regardless of our
18 civilians at Hurlburt set to be laid off
By JUSTIN HEINZE
Florida Freedom Newspapers
Eighteen civilian employees are slated
to be laid off as a result of a Department of
Defense initiative to return civilian manpower
to 2010 levels.
The Air Force announced last November
that 9,000 jobs would be cut as part
of the Global Base Support initiatives, a
streamlining of base support functions.
Hurlburt Field was ordered to cut 100
positions. Of those, all but 21 already were
vacant.
A news release from Hurlburt issued
Thursday stated that the cuts, known in
the Air Force as a “reduction in force”
(RIF), occurred despite efforts to reassign
terminated employees to positions that
were open.
“We offered incentives to separate and
to retire early,” said Amy Oliver, spokeswoman
for the 1st Special Operations Wing
at Hurlburt. “There were two rounds of
calls for people to volunteer. They submitted
applications, and if they were eligible,
that opened up their position for someone
else.”
The affected employees’ status was
changed to RIF this week. The cuts will be
effective Sept. 30.
The 18 people to be cut still can be
placed in other positions if opportunities
arise before Sept. 30.
“I clearly understand the unrest
these reductions cause within our
work force,” 1st SOW commander Col.
Jim Slife said in the news release. “We
intend to make every effort to locate positions
for as many affected employees as
possible, and to minimize the impact of
the RIF.”
As part of the same cuts, more than 300
positions at Eglin Air Force Base also will
be eliminated.
