With every club, sport, and activity
I have been involved in, I
remember to give 101%. I am so
happy to be a part of the HEHS
community, it would be an
honor to be a part of the Homecoming
celebrations and proudly
represent orange and blue!
What has been your biggest
accomplishment in high
school?
Receiving 4th place at BPA
nationals was exciting, being
a first time ever Hoffman BPA
team. Being part of the regional
win for the forensics team was
also exciting after the hard work
we put in. Keeping my grades
up while balancing the team activities
I have been a part of has
been my biggest accomplishment
in high school.
Who is your biggest inspiration
and why?
My mom. She has balance being
a professional dancer and
being an involved mom. She has
taught me to never give up, no
matter what obstacles come my
way.

Chicago. The culture, lights, and

Preparation, practice is
key to Powderpuff success

As of press time, Hoffman
Estates High School’s junior
and senior classes were gearing
up for the annual Powderpuff
Football game. By the time students
and staff are reading this
story, the juniors or the seniors
will have claimed victory. To
understand how these girls prepare
to face off, it is important
to understand how they prepare
for the big game. Thanks to dedicated
coaches, both sides will
be ready to play.
Each side has four dedicated
coaches who have been training
the girls intensely in order to
secure a victory. For the juniors,
the four coaches are Mr. Andersen,
Mr. Beers, Mr. Pfigler, and
Mr. Harlan. For the seniors, the
four coaches are Mr. Mallon,
Mr. Scully, Mr. Meador, and Mr.
Ulrich.
Every day after school,
the girls from both teams have
been practicing rigorously with
their coaches from 3 p.m. until
4:15 p.m. in preparation for the
game. They are training to ensure
each team can give it their
all during the game. The practice
consists of running many
plays, learning new techniques
to improve their football skills,
and working out to ensure they
are fit to compete.
Each team and their coaches
plan on taking to the field and
running off with a victory. They
appear eager to do whatever it
takes to do so. The excitement
among all of the players is
high.
“Expect aggressiveness
and us giving all of our hearts
out. The practices have been
very fun and the coaches
have been great. We have to
memorize a lot of plays during
practice. We are planning
on winning,” said Sara Ishak
(’14).
Senior competitor
Janelle Elam (’13) sees the
outcome differently.
“You should expect a
very competitive game. The
seniors are ready to kick butt
and have fun doing it. Good
luck juniors; you’re going to
need it!”
“Powderpuff will be
an intense, yet fun, game
that everyone will enjoy.
There will be guy cheerleaders
for juniors and seniors at
halftime, as well as a lot of
yelling and emotion,” added
teammate Alex Boyd (’13).
Along with the role-reversal
of girls playing football,
there also will be junior
and senior boys who will be
cheerleading during halftime.
“Expect a lot of energy
and exotic dancing. Each of
the boys has been working
equally as hard for their time
to shine during halftime,”
said Sean Habel (’13), a
Powderpuff cheerleader.
Overall, the experience
has been an exciting one for
the people involved.
“This experience has
taught me a lot about teamwork
and the benefit of team
members putting aside their
differences in order to win,”
said Sam Balogun (’13).

more. “Powderpuff will be a
great game to watch! Both
teams have been practicing
really hard; I’m excited to
see what happens on game
day.”

Hoffman is home to some
amazing people and equally
amazing events. One such event
is right around the corner – Cupcakes
for a Cause on October
20th. This year’s fundraiser is
expected by many to not only be
a great success, but also a way to
unite the community while raising
funds for HEHS’s Special Olympics
team and Autism Speaks.
The mission this year is
one synonymous with one of the
tenants of S.O.A.R. – accept differences
– while applying a new
spin.
“It’s like the accepting differences
part of S.O.A.R., but
rather than looking at differences,
we want the HEHS community
to see that we have more similarities
than differences,” said Amy
Longmore, Special Education
Department.
Though last year’s event
was created by many from across
D211 high schools, Cupcakes for
a Cause this year is made by the
HEHS students and staff. At this
point, Longmore expects almost
1,000 cupcakes to be donated to
The second annual 5K Hoffman
Hustle took place this past
Sunday, September 30th. The event
raised over $5000 and there were
almost 400 runners.
All proceeds went to the athletics
to fund equipment, jerseys,
and transportation. Parents, teachers,
and students alike participated
in the race.
Last year, Lori Pedersen
saw how expensive it was for her
daughter to run. She wanted to help
out with the cause and decided to
put together a 5K that would benefit
HEHS athletics as well as promote
a healthy lifestyle. “I wanted
to do something that was affordable
and enjoyable,” said Pedersen.
Bartosz Widelak (‘15) tookfirst
place for the boys and Renee
Clemment (‘14) took first place for
the girls. “This was a really good
race. I had a lot of fun! My goal
was to beat Mr. Brown and I did,”
said Widelak.
Students were excited to help
out the school. “Even though this
race was tiring, I really liked it. I’m
glad we had the opportunity to help
Hoffman,” said Clemment.
At the end of the race many
students felt invigorated. “I feel
skinnier!” exclaimed Brad Demmon
(YEAR).
“Now that I just ran more
than three miles, I don’t feel bad
for going to IHOP,” added Stefanie
Swan (‘14).
Many teachers were also participants
for the cause. “It’s such a
beautiful morning today. I love how
there are more people this year. Everyone
is so encouraging and it’s
great to see people cheering you on

Ryan Brown, English Department,
challenged Logan McGarry
(‘16) at last week’s homecoming
kick off assembly to try to beat
him in a race. If McGarry did, then
Brown promised to buy everyone
who had taken part in the fundraiser
ice cream sandwiches.
“I wasn’t expecting the race
to be so hard. The hills were tough,
but it was all worth it. Beating Mr.
Brown was the best feeling!” said
McGarry.
“It’s rare that there’s more
to gain from a loss than a win, but
that was the case in this situation. I
knew going in that if Logan won,
he would be a hero because everyone
would win. Just like the rest of
the school, I was on Team Logan as
well,” said Brown. “I doubt he ever
had any fear though; he ran that 5K
like a champion!”

Society and other school-run
organizations are helping make
the event possible. The turnout is
expected to be great as well. “Last
year we packed the place! We’re
encouraging people to carpool because
there weren’t even enough
parking spots,” said Longmore.
The concept of Cupcakes
for a Cause is a rather simple
one: bakers bake cupcakes for the
event. These creative cupcakes
can then be purchased by attendees.
Coming in people may buy
tickets, and then use their tickets
to choose from a wide array of
delicious cupcakes.
There is also entertainment
provided by the Hawkettes,
HEHS Cheerleading Squad,
HEHS flag team, POMS, an ATP
(Adult Transition Program) dance
group, and a Variety Show performance
by Vonzhelle and Nick
Mirich. Other activities include a
“sign a song” performance, face
painting, and of course, gobbling
all the cupcakes a person could
possibly eat. Many can chance on
winning a gift basket containing
anything from a candy to Cheesecake
Factory gift cards, created by
the parents of Special Olympics
athletes.
“More than anything, I’m
so happy to see all the enthusiasm
from the parents, students
and staff towards our event. Seeing
them come to me with ideas
and just excitement is what makes
having this event as Hoffman’s
event so rewarding,” Longmore
said.
Cupcakes for a Cause is
on October 20 from 11 a.m. to
2 p.m. There also will be t-shirts
for sale in the cafeteria the Friday
before. Come support the HEHS
community in helping our Special
Olympics team and Autism
Speaks. Live, laugh, love…eat
