Editor in Chief
Hoffman Estates students are on
a mad sugar rush! Could this be due
to Student Council creating this year’s
Homecoming dance around the theme
of “Candyland?” One could only hope.
Last year, the idea of Candyland
was suggested and voted on by
Student Council. Decorations will
be based off of the Candyland board
game; different areas of the hallway
outside of the gym will correlate with
the different areas on the board game.
“There’s going to be a lot of
decorations and different colors,” said
Miriam Bigurra, Student Council. “I
feel like this is going to be the best and
most fun Homecomings yet.” The decorations
will also include some of the
characters from the board game, as well.
Like previous years, couples’
tickets will be on sale Wednesday,
Thursday and Friday before the dance;
they will also be available at the door.
Single tickets, on the other hand, will
only be available at the door. Couples
tickets are $25 and single tickets are
$13. Students attending the dance must
have their school ID present; otherwise,
they will not be allowed into the
dance. But don’t get too hyper just yet!
The dress code for this year’s
dance is semi-casual. Students cannot
wear jeans, t-shirts or gym shoes.
If a student dresses inappropriately
he or she will not be permitted
into the dance. Access can be
granted if said student decides to return
home, change, and come back.
“We’ve had kids go home and return,
wearing something completely different,”
said Mike Wietlispach, Science
Department and new Student Council
Head. “It’s amazing how elegantly
some of our students come dressed.”
Now that you know how to look
sweet, here’s a treat. The DJ for this
year’s Homecoming dance is the same
DJ as last year’s Turnabout dance.
“We received a lot of good
feedback from the students last year,”
said Wietlispach. Wietlispach mentioned
that the DJ is focused on
satisfying the students as much as
possible. “He wants to have a onehundred
percent satisfaction rate.”
In wanting to do so, students
can go to: http://www.customeventdjs.djintelligence.com/request/request.
asp?ID=hehs2010 and request a song
that they would like to hear at the
dance. Also, video clips will appear on
two large screens as the dance persists.
While planning Homecoming,
Student Council has been putting a
lot of time and energy in another aspect
of the school – spirit. Working
alongside HEHS Principal Jim Britton,
Student Council has been organizing
many different ways to advocate
spirit. Tailgates are held before every
home football game, and Blue Crew
shirts have been selling for five dollars.
Candy will be passed out the
morning of the Homecoming game.
“I understand why Mr. Lindeen
didn’t get any sleep during the
weeks approaching Homecoming,”
said Wietlispach. Wietlispach is the
new Student Council Head after Ric
Lindeen retired last year. “It’s fun
but a lot of work. We have a great
group of about sixty kids who do a
bunch, especially with Blue Crew.”
Since prices of Blue Crew
have dropped, Student Council has
sold close to one thousand Blue Crew
t-shirts. Wietlispach plans on keeping
the price low to keep spirit up.
V-Show provides an “App” for entertainment
What if Hoffman students
wanted to watch all of their friends
and classmates show off their incredibly
unique talents? There’s an app for
that! Hoffman’s variety show offered
that chance for students to perform
in front of their classmates whether
they rapped, danced, sang, or juggled.
Whatever talents they may
have, this was the chance to show it
off. This year’s show was a great success
considering students performed
to a sold out auditorium. The funniest
students of Hoffman, the comedy
troupe, were able to reflect the theme of
“There’s an App for that!” very comically
throughout the entire show and
were, like always, very entertaining
to all three performance’s audiences.
“Being in Comedy Troupe was
awesome!” said Conor McGarry (‘12).
“It was fun meeting new people and
making people laugh during the show.”
Filipinos on Beat performed a thrilling
show two weeks ago. The dancers
impressed the audience with their
fast-paced moves and exciting music
selections. The group performed to a
mainstream medley including songs
such as “Dynamite” and the Nintendo
Wii theme song. The group was led
by Victor Lugo (‘11). Pictured from
left to right: Samantha Soriano (‘14),
Victor Lugo (‘11), Regina Emiliano
(‘11) and Gregg Lugo (‘14)
Other acts included dance
groups, singers, musicians, jugglers,
martial artists, rappers, and many more.
Samantha Soriano (‘14) from
Filipinos On Beat, describes the backstage
experience for the Variety Show
cast. “Backstage with the entire cast
was pure fun! It was a chance for everyone
to interact, get to know each
other, and practice in front of others
before the actual performance.”
Students committed a lot of
their time and effort into practicing,
rehearsals, and the actual show itself
in order to ensure that this year’s variety
show was a success. Their effort
and dedication paid off in the end.
Justin Clarke (‘11), who performed
with the HEHS Drumline,
says their act had a rough start.
“The hardest part was finding out
who would perform with us, and
writing the music. It was hard to
get everyone together as a group.”
Thankfully, crunch time lead
the drumline to pull everything together.
“We were successful because
people were willing to work hard,
add their own ideas, and adapt to different
situations,” says Clarke. “I’ve
performed for the last four years,
and I wish this wasn’t my last. Variety
Show is a great experience, and I
encourage everyone to give it a try.”
According to both teachers
and students who watched the variety
show, this year’s program demonstrated
more talent than many of Hoffman’s
variety shows in the past. Praise
from all members of the audience on
all three nights that this show was performed
gives Hoffman students who
participated in the variety show a lot
to brag about, and a lot to be proud of.
Students that are involved in
the variety show have a blast both onstage
and off, and the experience that
they have creates lifelong memories.
All in all, this year’s show was a
great success. It gave students the opportunity
to show off their unique talents,
and it was a chance for the rest of
Hoffman to experience these talents.
Do you think Hoffman is full of
incredibly talented individuals? You
should, because there’s an app for that.
The Comedy Troupe performed a
humorous skit during the Variety
Show. The Comedy Troupe has a
long history of amusing the crowds at
the annual show. This scene is part of
their parody of Grease Lightning. An
imitation of Jersey Shore and a depiction
of Principal Britton’s “mobile
office” were also included. Pictured
While the Homecoming
dance is approaching and many
students are figuring out ways
to ask someone out, the Hoffman
Estates football team has
been practicing for the most
anticipated night of the season
– the Homecoming Game.
The team has refined
its practices to improve performance
at games. “We practice
sophomores with varsity
to maximize numbers, and everybody
practices both offense
and defense for depth,” said
Head Coach William Helzer.
“We have both practiced mentally
and physically. The coaches
do a great job coaching us,”
said Donny Ballazhi (’11).
“We [the football team] are turning
it up a notch every week
and doing what we have to do,”
said David Gutierrez (’11).
The Broncos have it in for
us because this year our football
team has various strategies to
win, explained Helzer. “We want
to protect the ball at all cost, not
give them any chances, and limit
penalties and mistakes. Offensively,
we want to run with the
ball, be physical, and score with
any play. Defensively, we want
to be aggressive on the field,
blitz, preserve the ball and make
the other team make mistakes.”
Though it looks like no fun all
play, the teammates do get chances
to have fun outside of the sport.
The team has seen the
movie The Blind Side, gone
bowling, played laser tag, had
a belly flop contest at the pool,
had every senior do five hours
of community service, and
participated in a food drive.
“We can connect as friends and
we are closer together,” said Ballazhi.
After days of harsh practice,
it is only fair that they get
to have fun as a team together,
especially since it will help
them out in the field as well.
The team is described as
‘dedicated, hard-working student
athletes’ by Helzer. Helzer says
his players exceed academic standards,
which is something he is
very proud of. The students also
enjoy his pre-game speeches,
which leaves them dumbfounded,
but very motivated and pumped
up for the upcoming game. Coach
Helzer also takes great pride in
the 25 seniors the team has. “It’s
a high number of seniors, as
other schools have 25 students
out of 80 players. We have 55
players on our team, but almost
the same amount of seniors.”
The Homecoming Game is
on October 8 in the Garber Stadium,
and the Hawks are ready
to take on the Broncos. Put
on some blue and orange and
cheer on the Hoffman Hawks.
As the team’s motto “No Excuses”
suggests, we have no
excuse to miss the next game.
