After getting the same
treatment the previous
night in a 34-10 win against
Trinity, he was ready for it,
but still got plenty wet.
“Wow, yeah, just soaking
it all in right now,” Frasher
said. “I didn’t expect it
(Thursday). It caught me totally
off guard. It’s been a
good week for South Stokes
football.”
The Sauras rolled up 421
rushing yards on 38 carries -
relying heavily on Withers
(12 carries, 196 yards, two
touchdowns) and Martin (15
carries, 169 yards, four
touchdowns). Withers was 6
of 9 passing for 80 yards
with no interceptions.
South exploded for 21
points in the first quarter
and led 35-0 at halftime.
“J and J. Big nights for
both of them,” Frasher said.
“I’ve got to give kudos to the
guys up front. Jack (Haymore)
is one of the best offensive
linemen I’ve been
around in five years. Todd
Gibbs did a great job. Mike
Jones, Matt Bingman, a senior
captain. Hunter Johnson.
That’s where it starts.
We’ve got some boys up
front paving the way for
them.”
The Hawks couldn’t stop
the running game or do anything
offensively against the
Sauras’ D. Kestrel Heights
had only a single first down
in the first half - with four
drives ending in a punt, one
on downs, an interception
and a fumble.
“Defense played big
tonight,” Frasher said. “We
had a few breakdowns we
need to work on but think
we are headed in the right
direction.”
Withers ran 32 yards for
the first touchdown of the
night to cap off an impressive
87-yard drive to open
the game. Andrew Martin, a
soccer player making his
first varsity start, split the
uprights on the extra point
for a 7-0 lead with 8:37 on
the clock.
Zack Singleton recovered
a Kestrel Heights fumble on
the ensuing drive and
Jacquan Martin ran in for
his first touchdown of the
night for a 14-0 lead after
Andrew Martin’s kick.
A big punt return from
Damien Martin set the
Sauras up inside Hawks’
territory on the next drive
and Jacquan Martin scored
on another touchdown run
to make it 21-0.
Ryan S. Smith intercepted
Reggie Hartman’s pass
on the next drive and returned
it to the 34-yard line.
Withers had two big runs -
the second a 12-yard TD.
“It feels good and this is
my first year playing here
too,” Withers said. “Good
play calling, the linemen especially,
the slots blocking.
You just try to run hard, and
get good blocking, it’s pretty
much a good deal.
Added Martin: “Hard
work in practice. We’ve been
working our butts off and
the coaches have been pushing
us too.”
After narrow losses in
the first two weeks against
Bartlett Yancey and
McMichael, the Sauras
played well again in the
home opener against Rockingham
County.
Now, they’re finally over
the hump.
Frasher said the win just
explodes the team’s confidence
level.
“The kids are now tasting
what victory is like,”
Frasher said. “We’ve been so
close. So many have been
right there. Bartlett Yancey,
I don’t think it hurt them
because we were so close
and they were like ‘Wow’.
McMichael, Rockingham, it
hurt them.
“We are still learning
how to practice, the little
things. We are learning to
focus for four quarters. We
have to put a complete game
together yet. We still have
areas to improve.”
On a personal note,
Frasher was thrilled to get
his first head coaching win.
“I’m out of the zero column,”
he said with a chuckle.
“It was good to have that
first win. It’s a special night
tonight for all my family.”
The Sauras had 501 total
yards of offense. Josh
Wright was a multiple
threat with four rushes for
35 yards and four catches
for 30 yards. Damien Martin
finished with two receptions
for 50 yards.
Andrew Martin was 5 of
Sports
6 on extra points.
The Hawks had 33 yards
of total offense - 31 rushing
on 25 carries and 1-10 passing
for two yards.
Jacquan Martin broke
through a host of tacklers
for a 44-yard, third-quarter
touchdown and Jerome Benjamin
sacked Hartman in
the end zone in the fourth
quarter for a safety.
Up next is a home date
with the Bishop McGuinness
Villains (3-0), who run
a single wing offense and
are led by speedster Marty
DeFrancesco and Jared Pluciniczak.
The Villains got past
South Davidson 49-22 last
week.
In 2009 meeting, the
Sauras fell 55-0 in Kernersville.
