Happy New Year!
Another eventful year has slipped away. I know
that we all have had both good and not so
by Mike Payton
good memories of the past year. It is my fervent
hope that our recollections of 2008 will
for every member be mostly happy thoughts. But, I have discovered that
when things are not going so well, there always seems to be a number of
friends stepping forward to offer whatever help and encouragement they
have without any hesitation.
Our Christmas party was its traditional success. Our thanks to all those
who took time to make the arrangements and see that the information was
generated to all the members. Bill Weissmann and Cindy Payton came
through again.
The awards were presented to Cheyenne Dreiling for Spark Plug, Dave and
Donna Huggins as Outstanding Members and Chris Dreiling for the R.E.
Olds award and all were well deserved. And again, John Bonner demonstrated
his excellence in preparing the trophies.
To all who were there to share the evening, it was great, as always, to enjoy
your company. Those who weren’t able to attend were missed and I look
forward to the coming year with you all.
I am not able to express strongly enough how pround I am to have such
friends, and to be a member of such a stellar group of people.
Rocket ahead to a great 2009
Meeting Minutes by Gene Crowdis
December 2008 Monthly Meeting Minutes
The December meeting was held at 5:00 on December 14 just
before the annual NTOC Christmas Party. Mike Payton called the
meeting to order at 5:05 pm. There were 54 members present
for the meeting and/or Christmas Party. Special recognition goes
to Richard and Debbie Hirsch who came from Austin, Pat &
Margaret Yancey from Houston and Juju’s sister Jerry Margaret
who came from San Antonio.
Cindy gave the Treasurer’s report and we are financially solvent.
Cindy also provided information regarding the NTOC charities
for 2008.
Dave Huggins handed out Old car Pictures on a 2009 calendar.
Thanks Dave, mine is already in use.
NTOC Charities
Again this year the members of NTOC approved the donations to
local charities per the schedule set up after the 2006 Nationals.
Charities selected to receive $500.00 each were:
• North Texas Food Bank
• North Texas chapter of the Lupus Foundation
• Wounded Soldiers
• Mt. Pleasant Hospitality House
• Arlington Women’s Shelter
NTOC Members are very grateful for the work that Stewart and
Gayla Stephenson do to select the people and purchase the
items for the families at the Women’s Shelter.
Future Activities were discussed. In February the Sweethearts
and Orphans Show will be held in Weatherford. This year there
will be activities on Friday as well as Saturday and Sunday. The
organizers are trying to encourage participants to spend the
weekend in Weatherford and Decatur. The weekend will be the
same as the Decatur Swap Meet.
Discussion was held regarding the Ft. Worth Rod and Custom
Show in March. People who indicated that they were interested
are: Aron Nance, Mike Payton, John Bock and Gene Crowdis. If
you are interested in participating in the Club Display with your
car, please contact one of the club officers as soon as possible.
Discussion about a 2009 NTOC hosted Zone Show at Sandy Lake
Park was held. The park is just off of I-35E near the Carrollton/
Farmers Branch area. Chris has done some checking and there is
plenty of parking along with fun activities available. There is also
the option to have a picnic in the park area for participants. We
need your input regarding the type of Zone Show that you would
like to hold. Contact Chris Dreiling, Gene Crowdis, or any club
officer with your inputs.
We can have a one day event along with setting up a hotel to
handle the out-of-town participants. We would like to know your
feelings about a judged or non-judged event. What time of year
is best for you?
There being nothing more to bring before the club members
Mike adjourned the meeting at 5:25 pm so we could all go to
the party.
2008 NTOC Christmas Party
As usual we had a few minutes to greet each other before the
dinner, and then we all gathered inside the dining room for very
good meal. Dave Huggins offered a blessing for the group before
dinner was served. After the meal NTOC presented the annual
awards to members of NTOC who are selected for their special
participation in club activities.
The Spark Plug Award went Cheyenne Dreiling for her attendance
and participation in club, attendance at the OCA Nationals,
and even driving the Dreiling’s ’65 Starfire on the Drag Strip in
Michigan.
The Outstanding Members Award was presented to Dave and
Donna Huggins who travel to many meetings from Tyler; attend
functions like the OCA Nationals, the NTOC Fair Park Display
and the Bastrop Veterans Weekend Car Show. Dave and Donna
have shown the spirit of friendship and participation that we all
would like to have. And I believe that Dave intends to buy up all
of the Oldsmobiles that Rick Winn doesn’t buy.
The NTOC R.E. Olds Award was presented to Chris Dreiling.
Chris is one of the original founders of NTOC and has over the
past 20+ years, consistently provided leadership, friendship,
and Oldsmobile knowledge to the club. Chris will be the NTOC
president next year for the second time. For all of us that have
benefited from Chris’ expertise and ability to make parts, fix
parts, help us find parts we know the award was well deserved.
After the NTOC awards were presented Pat Yancey had a special
announcement. Spencer Yancey is five (5) years old this year and
in eligible for a five-year OCA Membership pin. Pat presented
Spencer with the pin at this time.
As usual there were many nice gifts among the packages under
the tree; however there are some that I am sure will be back
for a new owner next year. Probably the biggest surprise was
that someone wrapped two (2) $50.00 bills and put them in two
separate gifts. After all of the shuffling Tom Bilse wound up with
one of the $50.00 gifts and at the end of the game came forward
to donate it to the NTOC Treasury. Thanks Tom & Carole for
your generosity.
Gene Crowdis, Secretary NTOC
SEMA News - Source: SEMA Driving Force
I am on the SEMA Newsletter distribution list and received this BAD NEWS that the federal Congress is
considering overriding the laws established by independent states and will now try to impact our hobby.
The leaders of the House, Nancy Pelosi and the Senate, Harry Reid are working together to get this legislation
passed,”to improve the environment’ and to stimulate new car/truck sales.
Gene Crowdis
Speaking Out Against Scrappage
SEMA Cautions Congress on Flawed Cash for Clunker Programs
SEMA and the SEMA Action Network (SAN) are opposing efforts to revive consideration of federal funding
for vehicle scrappage programs. These programs accelerate the normal retirement of vehicles through the
purchase of older cars, which are then typically crushed into blocks of scrap metal.
In response to testimony delivered on Capitol Hill, SEMA sent letters to members of Congress to counter
requests that tax dollars be used to entice motorists to trade in their older cars and trucks for newer
models. SEMA emphasized that hobbyists would suffer with the indiscriminate destruction of older cars,
trucks and parts they need if scrappage programs were expanded with federal funds.
“America safeguards its artistic and architectural heritage against indiscriminate destruction,” said SEMA
Vice President of Government Affairs Steve McDonald. “Our automotive and industrial heritage deserves
the same protection.”
SEMA has also learned that legislators may also be considering scrappage as a clean-air measure and are
now in contact with these offices to explain scrappage’s shortcomings as an environmental measure. Traditionally,
scrappage efforts focus purely on vehicle age rather than actual emissions produced.
Enthusiasts played a vital role in defeating federal scrappage legislation in 2002 and should be prepared to
counter this renewed threat to the hobby. SAN members should stay tuned for e-mail alerts and updates
in Driving Force should a bill be introduced.
For more information, contact SAN Director Jason Tolleson at jasont@sema.org.
Cash for Clunkers Sounds Good, But is Bad Policy
• Old Cars Are Valuable to Collectors, But Not Taxpayers: An unchecked Cash for Clunkers program
risks destroying classic, historic and special-interest vehicles. America safeguards its artistic and
architectural heritage against indiscriminate destruction. Our automotive and industrial heritage
deserves the same protection.
• Cash for Clunkers Programs Do Not Take Gross Polluters Off the Road: Cash for Clunkers focus on
vehicle age rather than actual emissions produced. This approach is based on the erroneous assumption
that “old cars are dirty cars.” However, the true culprits are “gross polluters”—vehicles of any
model year that are poorly maintained.
• Squeezes Low-Income Citizens: Low-income Americans would be hurt by expanding Cash for Clunkers.
Such programs reduce the supply and availability of affordable transportation and repair parts—
the very cars and parts most often bought by low and fixed-income drivers.
How Can the Federal Government Ensure that the Replacement Vehicle Is Any Cleaner?:
• There is no
guarantee with a Cash for Clunkers program that a replacement vehicle (if there is one) will be cleaner
running or more fuel-efficient than the vehicles the government paid to scrap. For example, many
popular cars in 1979 achieved higher mileage ratings than 2008 vehicles.
Sweethearts and Orphans X — February 20-22, 2009 -- Weatherford, Texas
The North Texas Chapter of the Hudson-Essex-Terraplane Club invites you to join us in beautiful Weatherford, Texas, for
Sweethearts and Orphans X.
We’re meeting just down the road from – and on the same weekend as - the Decatur Swap Meet! C’mon out and combine these
two great events into one terrific “old car” weekend!!! As you know by now, this meet has two purposes: to bring together the
owners of all kinds of “orphan cars” to establish or renew common bonds and friendships; and to set aside a little time during
Valentine Season to honor the wives, girlfriends, or significant others (it’s not always the guys that are the car nuts!) that put
up with us dragging rusty, greasy parts through the house! And, of course, all proceeds go to the American Heart Association
to continue the great work they do all through the year.
For those who don’t know, “orphan cars” are those wonderful and historic automobiles whose parent companies have disappeared
from the American scene – like Hudson, Studebaker, Kaiser, Frazer, Packard, Nash, Willys, Crosley, Graham, Essex,
Terraplane, DeSoto*, Edsel*, and many others. More recent “orphans” include AMC, Plymouth* and Oldsmobile*. These
marques – and many more - are very welcome, but to keep the “vintage flavor” of our meet we ask participation of pre-1989
vehicles only. Sweethearts and Orphans is a non-judging meet. S&O meets are not about competition. There are Peoples’
Choice (by decade) and a Sweethearts’ Choice award, but good friends and fond memories are the true prizes you’ll take home
from this meet.
On Thursday evening, Feb 19, Registration will open at the Host Hotel. It will open again on Friday, Feb 20. We expect that
most of the “old car guys” will spend most of Friday at the Decatur Swap Meet, an easy 35-40 minute drive up Hwy 51
from the Host Hotel. Also on Friday morning (at 10:00 AM), there will be a very special Ladies’ Tour, including a visit
to the very beautiful and historic Chandor Gardens with a catered luncheon served in the historic home. After lunch, we’ll
take in Weatherford’s Doss Cultural Center, which offers a look into Parker County’s history and will also be hosting a unique
traveling exhibit “Art Quilts of the Rocky Mountains”. This tour will be an exceptional outing – don’t miss it! We’ll leave
time for some late afternoon shopping, too.
On Friday evening, you can register, renew old friendships, or just relax at the hotel. Coffee and other refreshments will be
served in our hospitality room at the La Quinta on Friday evening. Feel free to bring snacks to share – and games to play
- if you like. On Saturday, Feb 21, Registration will be open downtown from 9:00 AM to Noon on Parker County Courthouse
Square. Our “orphans” will be on display from 9:00 AM until 2:30 PM on the west quadrants of the freshly remodeled
Square surrounding the Parker County Courthouse. A portion of the Square has also been reserved for non-orphan vintage
cars. Let’s show them LOTS of great cars -- and fill up the entire Square!!! There are dozens of boutiques and stores on and
near the Square. On Saturday evening, we’ll have our Sweethearts’ Outing – a presentation of the classic play “Harvey“
at the Theater-Off-The-Square in Weatherford. “Harvey” may be familiar to you from Jimmy Stewart’s 1950 movie version.
We’ll precede the play with dinner on your own – make sure you take your sweetheart someplace nice! If you want to caravan
from the hotel, we’ll leave for the theater at 7:30 PM – the Play starts at 8:00 PM.
The Awards Presentation will take place at the La Quinta at 9:00 AM on Sunday, Feb 22, and you will be on your way
home by mid-morning. Our Host Hotel will be the La Quinta Inn, 1915 Wall Street, Weatherford, TX. The back-up hotel will
be the Sleep Inn, 1911 Wall Street, right next door to the La Quinta. Both are located just a few blocks north of I-20, exit 408,
off Main Street (TX FM-51). La Quinta’s phone is 817 594-4481; Sleep Inn’s phone is 817 594-9699. You must call the hotel’s
local number and tell them you are with the Sweethearts and Orphans group to get the special meet rate. Rooms will fill up
fast, and the rooms will only be held until February 1, so make your reservations ASAP!
The Weatherford La Quinta is the nicest host facility we’ve ever had for Sweethearts and Orphans… King or double rooms
are $85.00, both smoking and non-smoking rooms are available and pets are allowed! If you’d like a suite, you’ll need to call
for price as several different suite styles are available. The Sleep Inn is making rooms available at a rate of $79.99 for king or
double rooms or $99.99 for suites. Sleep Inn has smoking/non-smoking rooms, but does not allow pets. Both hotels are nearly
new and exceptionally clean, and both include extensive breakfast bars in their room rates. We selected the La Quinta as our
primary hotel because of its slightly larger, more comfortable lobby, larger meeting rooms, and larger parking areas. As noted,
both hotels include an extended continental breakfast and all rooms have a refrigerator, microwave oven, coffeemaker, hair
dryer, high-speed internet and HD TV! There are many restaurants and shopping areas nearby.
We will have a 50/50 Raffle at the Meet. If you’re not familiar with 50/50 raffles, the holder of the winning ticket gets 50% of
the money collected from raffle ticket sales. The remaining 50% of the pot will be donated to the American Heart Association.
You can’t win if you’re not in!!!
Remember February is American Heart Month – Give Life a Second Chance
