Hello NTOC members! The March meeting
at J.Gilligan’s had a great turnout, perhaps
because of the beautiful weather! I even rolled
out Big Red for the drive to Arlington (she loved
by Judith Nance
it). We are off to a fast start this spring with several
trips/shows planned for April and May. The April 11th meeting will be
a picnic at the Bath House on White Rock Lake, picnic at 12:30 pm and
meeting to start at 2:00 pm. NTOC will provide sandwich makings and
soft drinks and if you feel so inclined please add a dish or dessert. VERY
IMPORTANT, bring chairs. In case of bad weather, we will meet at our
house. Directions to both are in the next pages of the Rocket.
Lubbock is another destination for the Blue Ribbon Rally Car/Bike Show
April 24th and to visit Rick Winn and Stacy who have recently moved
there. Rooms have not been booked, but the Best Western (806-762-8400)
is where we are staying. Weekend rate is $80. Some of us are leaving
Thursday, April 22nd for a long weekend. Rick and Stacy have invited us
to their house for dinner after the show on Saturday. What great members
we have!
Next on the agenda is a trip May 8th to Emerald Bay on Lake Palestine
in East Texas. John Bock and Richard Witkovski (of North Star Dragway
fame) have arranged for us to view Jerry Ball’s private car collection!
Details from John to follow.
Start your engines and let’s get our beautiful Oldsmobiles out on the road
where they belong!
Happy Easter!
Meeting Minutes by Gene Crowdis
March 2010 Monthly Meeting Minutes
The March NTOC monthly meeting was held on March
14th at J. Gilligan’s in Arlington. President Chris Dreiling
called the meeting to order at 2:10 and welcomed
everyone. There were 24 members present. Chris
welcomed everyone and announced that this would be his
last meeting as president.
Treasurer’s Report
Chris called on Cindy for the Treasurer’s report. Cindy
reported that the NTOC remains fi nancially sound.
NTOC Membership Dues
Cindy announced that it is again time for members to
renew their NTOC membership. Dues are $18.00 per
year for a family or $32.00 per family for two (2) years.
If you don’t know when your current membership expires
contact Cindy by email at c_payton@aircanopy.net.
Cindy will also be posting a list of members who need
to renew their memberships in the Rocket in the near
future. Several members have renewed as of the March
meeting, but several others need to send in their dues so
Cindy can fi nalize the 2010–2011 roster and send out the
annual fi nancial report. Some of our members are close
to the expiration date for their OCA dues. Please check
your JWO to see if your membership needs to be renewed
anytime soon. NTOC has always been compliant with the
OCA requirements, but our goal should be to have 100%
participation.
NTOC Long Term Membership Pins
Design of the NTOC Long Term Membership Pins has
been fi nalized. The basic pin will be the current NTOC
Logo in four colors, red, white, blue and gray. The pin is
designed so that hangers can be attached to the bottom of
the pin and different colored hangers can be attached to
indicate the number of years you have been a member of
NTOC. Colors for the hangers are 5 years - white, 10 years
– red, 15 years – light blue, 20 years – dark blue and 25
years – black. When the pins are passed out for the fi rst
time the members will get a pin and the current level of
membership hanger. If you want the previous level hangers
they will be available for $2.00 each. Membership pins
will be provided after fi ve years to both family members
as appropriate.
We discussed upcoming events-
Richard Witkowski has made arrangements for NTOC
members to view a private collection of classic cars on
the 8th of May at Emerald Bay, near Lake Palestine. The
cars belong to Jerry Ball who has them stored in a building
near the lake. Plans for a caravan drive and picnic will be
discussed at a future meeting. (Sorry Lois, the 15th wasn’t
a good day for Mr. Ball.)
Some NTOC members are planning to take a Thursday thru
Sunday Road Trip, in the spring – This will be to Lubbock
to participate in an annual car show and to visit the Winns.
Rick and Stacy moved to Lubbock in 2009 so in April we
are putting together a group to go to Lubbock. Dates are
April 23, 24, and 25. Several members indicated they were
considering making this trip. The Hotel we are using is a
Best Western in Lubbock. Phone # 806-762-8400 rates
$69.00 - $79.00 per night plus tax.
There will be a charity car show in Richardson at the
Heights Baptist Church on April 10. Several members
of the NTOC went last year. The charities are for God’s
Food Pantry and The Heights Children’s Ministry to help
pay for kids to go to church camp this summer. Entry
is $10.00 or 10 cans of food. Registration on-line at
www.heightscarshow.com or 11:00 – 2:00 on Saturday.
Show hours 12:00 to 4:00 pm.
Show will be held at The Heights Baptist Church, 201 West
Renner Road, Richardson, Texas 75080. (Southwest corner
of US 75 & Renner Rd) (see ad on pg. 7)
Autos in the Park Car Show at the Cooper Aerobics Center
June 6, 2010. This is an annual event that we have been
invited to attend. Some members indicated they would
like to attend. More entry details will be published as they
are available. Proceeds will once again benefi t two of the
areas more noteworthy non-profi ts; The Cooper Institute
and The Texas Scottish Rite Hospital.
Please mark your calendar: June 6, 2010, noon to 4 PM,
12200 Preston Road, Dallas, Texas.
There will be a lot of Car Shows and Cruises over the
next several months. If you are going to display at one
of them send Lois an email so she can announce it and a
few of us might join in.
Chris is still working with 21st Century Cars to set up a
date when NTOC members and/or their friends can take
their cars in for a Dyno Test. He is having some problems
with setting the date and is also trying to get Lone Star
Performance to work with us for the Dyno Test date.
Normal cost for having this done is $75.00, but Chris said
they would do it on a Saturday for $45.00 per car. This is
your chance to get your car checked out for performance
Tech Talk
Les Bowles discussed the issues with buying tires for our
cars. The tires may be “new” as “never driven on the
road” but they may be 7 or more years old and have been
sitting in a warehouse. When you buy tires make sure the
salesman shows you the date code that is molded in the
inside tire wall. Buyer beware!!!! Remember there is not
much call for 14” tires so not many are being made!!
Be careful about buying tires over the internet from
companies like Tire Rack since you can’t look at the tire
for the manufactured date yourself. Always ask them to
provide the dates BEFORE you purchase.
Thanks Les for the Tech talk subject.
April Meeting
April NTOC monthly meeting will be held at 2:00 pm at
the Bath House at White Rock Lake. See information with
maps dates and time in this issue of the Rocket.
Australian Visitors
We discussed Bob Scafi di who lives in Australia. Bob
will be in the Ft. Worth area in August this year. He has
contacted Chris Dreiling and me to see if we could let him
know about the car related activities in this area while he
and his family are in town. We believe that he will be here
during the weekend of our meeting and are trying to see
that we give him a Texas style welcome.
THANKS CHRIS!!!!
President Chris Dreiling closed his last meeting at 3:45
pm and the NTOC members gave Chris a big round of
applause for his leadership over the past year.
TRIP TO EMERALD BAY - May 8th 2010
Have you ever seen the beauty of east Texas in the spring, especially the Tyler area (rose capitol of the U.S.). Well, we
have planned a day or weekend (your choice) to Emerald Bay on Lake Palestine to view a private collection of cars,
approx. 45, in a museum setting owned by a resident of this community. The collection I have been told can only be
viewed by invitation and the cars from different periods are displayed with mannequins properly dressed for their time
period. The owner’s wife does all the displays. It sounds to be a trip worth taking and I am sure all will enjoy. We plan
to leave Dallas early so that we will have the day to view the cars and enjoy the company of our fellow club members.
Since this is by private invitation, all who want to attend and even those who are giving it some thought, it will be
necessary to get your name on the list for entrance to Emerald Bay. More details will be provided.
Fellow OCA members,
The Oldsmobile Club of America, Inc.
Offi ce of the President
March 27, 2010
I have been contacted by several OCA members from across the country regarding some campaign letters sent
supporting another candidate for President. It is the right of each OCA member and/or candidate to present their
opinion and preferences in this election. However, as your President, I would like to take this opportunity to provide
the membership with some facts to ensure informed voting by all.
To counter the veiled insinuations regarding “increased fi scal responsibility”, “assuring fi scal responsibility”, “ensuring
fi scal integrity” and” irregularities in the club’s operation” I am providing a list of accomplishments (below) of
the Board of Directors over the past 6 years. There has been no question of any fi scal condition during any Board
Meeting and one has to wonder why it only surfaces at the time of this election.
If you review your October JWO copies for the past 5 or 6 years you will see that OCA remains fi nancially sound
and ready to approach the next four years with your support. After reading the facts presented here, I believe
you will agree that the experience of the current Executive Board warrants your vote. I appreciate your support
for myself and the two current Executive Board members seeking re-election, Ed Konsmo, Vice president and
Gene Crowdis, Treasurer.
Pat Yancey
OCA President
Three Offi cers on the Executive Committee are seeking re-election this year.
President – Pat Yancey Vice-President - Ed Konsmo Treasurer – Gene Crowdis
Why should you support and vote for these candidates?
Here are some of the accomplishments they have helped put into place:
• Reduced cost of Journey with Olds while providing award winning four-color copy every month over the past
4 years.
• Operating costs for OCA have decreased through the efforts of the current offi cers.
• Programs that prove to benefi t the entire Membership have been the priority.
• OCA Insurance Rates have not increased in the past 6 years.
• Programs that were in place, but benefi tted only a few OCA members were improved or eliminated.
• Started annual OCA budget that is approved by the Board of Directors and has been met every year for the
past 6 years.
• Full disclosure of the OCA fi nancial status is printed in the JWO each October.
• Successfully implemented new programs to ensure compliant Local Chapters each year.
• Current Vice President has assisted 22 chapters to become 100% compliant with OCA membership.
• Programs introduced to provide sponsorship funding to the OCA Chapters hosting the OCA National Meets.
• Annual CPA Financial Review and Income Tax Preparation costs reduced from over $5000.00 to approximately
$1450.00 per year.
• OCA Member’s equity increased over the past six years without any consideration for a dues increase.
• “Checks and balances” are in place to ensure that OCA funds are used only for approved expenditures.
“Two signature checks.”
• Opened the OCA National Event to Drag Racing beginning in 2006 – 2007 Nationals
Please provide this information to other members of OCA through local chapter meetings and Chapter Newsletters.
This will help your members be informed when they make decisions when they vote. Be sure to read the Bios and
other voting information in the April JWO along with this handout.
Election Issues
Comment: Candidate proposals are to establish (or in one case re-establish) “Term Limits’”.
Response: There are no records available to indicate that there has ever been “Term Limits” for Board Members.
This subject has not been presented to the Board of Directors for the past eight or more years, if ever.
This would require a Bylaw change and Membership approval. When a proposal is presented during the Board
Meeting the matter will be discussed and when approved by the Board will be presented to the Membership for
their consideration. (The current offi cers don’t understand why this is a major issue for this election.) If you look
at the nominees for most positions, we only have enough to fi ll the positions. Term limits does not appear to be a
problem.
Comment: Some candidates have called for more “fi scal responsibility” and a “complete audit performed every
four years”. In the April JWO you will fi nd the Bylaws and Policies that cover these requests.
Response: If there is a question, all that has to be done is go to the Bylaws and Policies and follow them. The
cost for a full audit is estimated by our CPA at approximately $15,000.00 for the initial audit and $5000.00 for
subsequent audits. The Board of Directors would have to approve the funds to pay for this audit. In the records
that were provided to the current treasurer there is no evidence of ever having a full audit. Financial Compilation
reports are what have been historically available.
It is interesting that the new candidate running for Treasurer spent $140.00 of OCA funds for hot dogs and drinks
for the Race Car Drivers at Pacifi c Junction, Iowa in 2008 without pre-approval. In 2009 he submitted a request
for $3000.00 discretionary funding for the 2009 Byron, Ohio race. Then he requested that “Road Show” funds
be used to provide a Bar-B-Q for race car drivers at a proposed race in 2009. Both requests were denied by the
OCA Board of Directors. Neither request is fi scal responsibility, in the opinion of OCA offi cers, when only a limited
few would benefi t from the use of OCA members general funds.
We urge you to continue with the leadership that emphasizes fi scal restraint and projects that are good for all
OCA Members, not a limited group.
The following members are seeking re-election:
X President - Pat Yancey X Vice-President - Ed Konsmo X Treasurer - Gene Crowdis
rocketcruiser@att.net ekonsmo@msn.com decrow@tx.rr.com
The following candidates are endorsed for election in the Western Great Lakes Zone.
X Zone Director - Phil Fischer New candidate
X Zone Director - Mike Goodwin New Candidate
All other Zone Directors are fully endorsed but running unopposed.
Thank you for your consideration. BE SURE TO VOTE
