Feb. 4th, Saturday. Weather quite pleasant today.<br />

Received a letter and a paper from home.<br />

Feb. 5th, Sunday. Morning quite cold and feels like snow<br />

again. Had a dismounted regimental inspection at 9 A.M. by<br />

"Major Otis" in the afternoon. Went into the woods for a<br />

log. Whilst out, a scouting party was made out to be gone<br />

for three. I was on it but did not get around in time to<br />

go with it.<br />

[52] Feb. 6th, Monday. Detailed for picket this morning.<br />

Weather quite sharp. Got on a good post.<br />

Feb. 7th, Tuesday. Pretty cold night. Commenced snowing<br />

about 6 A.M. Likely to be a heavy fall. Relieved from<br />

picket about noon. Desperate cold riding to camp. Had to<br />

got to the woods as soon as I landed. Turned in early.<br />

Feb. 8th, Wednesday. Cold morning and about eighteen<br />

inches of snow. Woods again. Thought I should freeze.<br />

Answered my wife's letter of the 4th inst.<br />

Feb. 9th, Thursday. Very cold morning, the usual high<br />

winds and as cold as ever. Went on stable guard.<br />

Feb. 10th, Friday. Very cold night. Came off guard at 9<br />

A.M. Received a paper from home. Drew eight fresh horses<br />

in the company. Washed clothes today.<br />

Feb. 11th, Saturday. Weather pleasant but frosty. Turned<br />

in my horse, as he was unservicable. Was detailed to take<br />

the old horses to the "corral." In the afternoon, drew a<br />

horse by lot and got an old black skeleton, wicked as a<br />

tiger cat, named "Dago."<br />

[53] Feb. 12th, Sunday. Cold and windy again. Mounted<br />

inspection at 9 A.M. but, being detailed for stable guard,<br />

I missed that, for which I was glad.<br />

Feb. 13th, Monday. The coldest night and morning this<br />

winter, it being impossible to keep warm by walking. Came<br />

off guard at 9 A.M.<br />

Feb. 14th, Tuesday. Detailed for picket. Stationed on the<br />

right of the "Millwood" Pike. Day pleasant.<br />

Feb. 15th, Wednesday. Weather again cold, with a heavy<br />

fall of snow. All quiet last night. Was relieved from<br />

picket about 11 A.M.<br />
