Received a letter from<br />
Oct. 11, Saturday. Nothing going on. Received a very<br />
curious letter from M[?], the major part of which I copied.<br />
[2] Oct. 12, Sunday. As the captain was not on board, we had<br />
prayers read to us by the first master.<br />
Oct. 14, Tuesday. The captain returned from Memphis on the<br />
De Soto this afternoon. Whilst on the wharf boat, Acting<br />
Rear Admiral Porter arrived to take charge of the flotilla,<br />
A.R.A. Davis being relieved. Sent an answer to the letter<br />
of Oct. 7th. Drew four yards of flannel and one pair of<br />
socks from the purser. Fired a salute in Admiral Porter's<br />
honor.<br />
Oct. 15, Wednesday. Drew three yards of satinet from the<br />
purser. Nothing of any consequence took place.<br />
Oct. 16, Thursday. Purser Nexen paid out a little money<br />
today, I receiving twenty dollars. Settlement in a couple<br />
of weeks.<br />
Oct. 17, Friday. Sixty men went to Mound City today for<br />
shell. Took them aboard.<br />
Oct. 18, Saturday. Went ashore with the Master-at-Arms and<br />
bought twenty dollars worth of stores for our mess.<br />
Received a letter from home stating that my child was very<br />
sick. Turned in about 10 P.M.<br />
Oct. 19, Sunday. Was turned out this morning at 5 A.M. and<br />
was surprised to find steam up. After breakfast we hove up<br />
the anchor and steamed up river a little ways and commenced<br />
coaling up, as we had received orders to go to Helena, Ark.<br />
Got done coaling at noon, then steamed to Mound City for<br />
to get some of our old crew. Got only one. Left about<br />
three P.M. and sailed past Cairo. Came to a little ways<br />
below and sent the mail ashore and hoisted all boats up and<br />
then stood down the Mississippi. Arrived and anchored<br />
opposite Columbus about 8 1/2 P.M. Turned in at 10 P.M.<br />
Answered the letter from home and sent 15.00.<br />
[3] Oct. 20, Monday. Was turned out at 5 A.M. Hove up the<br />
anchor and kept on our way. Passed Island 10 in the<br />
forenoon and Tiptonville about 2 P.M. Came to anchor off<br />
Mitchell's Landing at 6 1/2 P.M.<br />
Oct. 21, Tuesday. Turned out this morning at 5 A.M. The<br />
anchor was then hove up and we started. Spoke the gunboat<br />
