according, a rifled shell was sent towards her which had<br />
the effect of bringing her up instanter. A tug was<br />
despatched with our executive on board to enquire her<br />
business. On her return, we found that she had come up on<br />
business connected with the exchange of prisoners, her<br />
captain at the same time apologizing for coming so close to<br />
our position. The gunboat Conestoga arrived from Cairo,<br />
bringing a heavy mail, but none for me.<br />
Oct. 29, Wednesday. The rebel boat remained at anchor all<br />
night and this morning she steamed up to the town and ran<br />
in alongside of the wharfboat, her flags still flying. The<br />
Lexington arrived from Cairo, as did also the Emerald with<br />
a load of secesh prisoners to be exchanged. After a short<br />
[5] stay, she left for Vicksburg, convoyed by the gunboat<br />
Conestoga. In the afternoon, the Lexington went to Cairo,<br />
carrying the mail with her. "Ye reb" downed his flag.<br />
Oct. 30, Thursday. The transport Brown arrived from Cairo<br />
this morning and brought the mail. I received two papers<br />
and a letter from my wife. It affected me very much. God<br />
help her in her troubles. The rebel boat left this<br />
morning. In the forenoon we fired a salute for a new fort<br />
which had just been finished. The Louisville, "in tow of<br />
B," left for Cairo in the afternoon.<br />
Oct. 31, Friday. General Quarters this morning. All boats<br />
were manned, armed, and called away. One of our crew,<br />
named Charles Frederickson, a native of Sweden, died on<br />
board this afternoon.<br />
November 1, Saturday. Went ashore after the mail this<br />
morning. The gunboat Bragg went on a recconaisance<br />
downriver at noon today. Received a letter from my old<br />
friend, Wm. J. Butler, this afternoon. At night, went<br />
ashore with a return mail.<br />
Nov. 2, Sunday. Divine service and muster at 9 1/2 A.M.<br />
Then went ashore to church, Thomas R. Davis and I going to<br />
the Catholic Church. The Bragg returned this afternoon.<br />
Reports seeing nothing.<br />
Nov. 3, Monday. Manned and armed all boats. Crews landed<br />
on a dry bar on the river and went through a drill.<br />
Answered Wm. J. Butler's letter.<br />
Nov. 6, Thursday. The gunboat "Conestoga" and the<br />
transport "Emerald" arrived from Vicksburg late last<br />
evening. Drew from the paymaster one scrub brush twenty<br />
eight.<br />
