Measures of Child Language Development
Preschool Language Scale-4 (PLS-4). The PLS-4 is standardized for use with
children between birth to 7 years of age and takes between 20 and 30 minutes to
administer (Zimmerman et al., 2002). The PLS-4 provides standard scores and language
age equivalents for auditory comprehension and expressive communication as well as a
total language score. The internal consistency for 1-5 year olds ranges from .72 to .97.
The test-retest stability in the relevant developmental periods ranges from .82 to .97. The
PLS-4 is an appropriate tool for diagnosing language delay (Zimmerman & Castilleja,
2005), and was given when children are 24 months of age. Standardized total scores of
auditory comprehension and expressive communication will be reported for the sample,
but raw total scores will be utilized in growth curve analyses.
