such as those <strong>in</strong> <strong>Lyttelton</strong> <strong>Harbour</strong> where the organic<br />

matter reaches 10 percent (~ig.12).<br />

<strong>The</strong> amount capable of be<strong>in</strong>g adsorbed is a<br />

function of the gra<strong>in</strong> size, the surface area of which<br />

<strong>in</strong>creases rapidly as the diameter decreases.<br />

were selected for their good sort<strong>in</strong>g to m<strong>in</strong>imize disturbance<br />

from the va!iation <strong>in</strong> gra<strong>in</strong> sizes. A regression l<strong>in</strong>e<br />

was calculated us<strong>in</strong>g a computer program.<br />

This had the<br />

low scatter. Gra<strong>in</strong> sizes larger than phi 1 had extremely<br />

small amounts of organic material but this rose <strong>in</strong> a<br />

l<strong>in</strong>ear fashion to reach about ten percent at phi 5.<br />

2.11 Sediment types at selected sites<br />

Forty sites among the 74 sampled over the<br />

<strong>in</strong>vestigation period were selected as be<strong>in</strong>g representative<br />

of all of the areas under <strong>in</strong>vestigation. <strong>The</strong> results
