Dukot Movie Shown at USC

The award-winning independent
film, ―Dukot
(Desaparecidos)‖ had its premiere
showing in Cebu on March 5 and 6,
2010. This was sponsored by the
Department of Sociology and Anthropology
in cooperation with two nongovernment
organizations – the
Farmers‘ Development Center
(FARDEC)
and CommunityEmpowerment
Resource
Network
(CERNET).
The movie
had seven
viewing
schedules
with an audience
of
mostly
Carolinian
students, as
well as students
from
other
schools, non-government organizations
and relatives of real life desaparecidos
(those who have involuntarily
disappeared because of their
involvement in movements for social
change). The activity capped the
celebration of SoAn Week from
March 1 to 6, 2010.
Story writer Bonifacio Ilagan
and lead actor Allen Dizon graced the
event held at the Gansewinkel Hall of
the University of San Carlos. They
shared with the audience their insights
on the film and how they
worked to make it worth watching.
The movie has received a number of
awards and nominations from various
award-giving bodies.
For
the benefit
of those
who were
not able to
watch the
movie last
March, the
movie producers
and
the Department
of
Sociology
and Anthropologyorganizedsimultaneous
special
screenings
of the movie last July 31, 2010 at the
Buttenbruch Hall and CAFA Theater.
This time, it was Director Joel Lamangan
and Allen Dizon who graced the
affair. Plans are being mapped out
to show in USC yet another independent
film entitled ―Sigwa‖ which
was recently shown in the Cinemalaya
Film Festival in Manila.

SoAn Alumni Gathering Held

of Sociology and Anthropology
gathered at the USC-
TC Rigney Hall and covered
court last April 9, 2010 for its
alumni gathering. Activities
included an opening mass, a
short program to update the
alumni on the department as
well as to give the department
an update on the alumni, a basketball
game between alumni
and students, bingo socials, and
a dinner program. Around sixty
alumni and students participated
in the activities. SoAn graduates
who attended the activity in-
the Dept. of Sociology and Anthropology
at Ateneo de Manila
University; research associates of
the Office of Population Studies
Foundation; missionary priests
from the Society of Saint Columban;
staff from various nongovernment
organizations as well
as government agencies and
local government units; among
others. During the meeting, the
SoAn Alumni Association was
organized and officers of the
Board were elected at large. Mr.
Glenn R. Labrado was elected as
its first president.

Congressman Walden Bello
speaks at SoAn Forum

An
academic forum
on ―A Social
Analysis of
the 2010 National
Elections‖
was held at the
Rigney Hall on
March 2, 2010
with Partylist
Congressman
Walden Bello, a
distinguished
social scientist
and former
professor at the
Dept. of Sociology
at UP Diliman
as
speaker.
The
forum drew an audience from the students of
Sociology and Anthropology at the Talamban
Campus. Prof. Bello talked about the prevailing
discourse and issues tackled by politicians
in the election campaign. He emphasized
that corruption per se should not be the
highlight of the campaigns as there are
deeper roots to the economic crisis in the
country, such as the foreign debt, trade liberalization,
and other political-economic issues.
He cited that most politicians in the
campaign do not have a clear stand on these
issues and concrete programs on how to
bring the country out of the long-entrenched
economic crisis.
After the forum, Professor Bello
proceeded to have lunch at the Department
of Sociology and Anthropology together with
the SoAn faculty and student-majors.
