A Semester <strong>of</strong> Firsts<br />

In the first half <strong>of</strong> the Academic<br />

Year 2010, the Psychology Department<br />

embarked on a sharing <strong>of</strong> knowledge in<br />

the local <strong>and</strong> international arena through<br />

participation in conferences <strong>and</strong> presentation<br />

<strong>of</strong> studies.<br />

During the summer months, a<br />

team <strong>of</strong> three namely, Leah Auman,<br />

Cholen Osorio, <strong>and</strong> Rose Velasco gave a<br />

3-day seminar to the facilitators at the<br />

Love <strong>and</strong> Share Foundation, Inc. titled<br />

System. Pupils <strong>and</strong><br />

Teachers welcomed the<br />

library <strong>and</strong> information science<br />

group with songs, cheers<br />

<strong>and</strong> smiles. <strong>The</strong> group<br />

was given a tour around<br />

the school <strong>and</strong> library.<br />

experience to cherish.<br />

―Child Survival Program Facilitator‘s Training‖.<br />

<strong>The</strong> seminar was one <strong>of</strong> the first interventions<br />

undertaken in partnership with the<br />

non-pr<strong>of</strong>it organization helping in the formation<br />

<strong>of</strong> children from urban poor families.<br />

<strong>The</strong> seminar was designed to equip the center‘s<br />

volunteers, who work directly with the<br />

children, with more knowledge, skills, <strong>and</strong><br />

attitudes in the psychology <strong>of</strong> child development.<br />

In the international front, <strong>The</strong> First<br />

International Conference on Indigenous <strong>and</strong><br />

Cultural Psychology convened last July 24-<br />

26, 2010 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. In this<br />

momentous event, the chair <strong>of</strong> the Psychology<br />

Department presented the first<br />

part <strong>of</strong> her doctoral dissertation<br />

titled ―Variations <strong>of</strong> Interdependent<br />

behavior across different social<br />

groups‖. A few weeks earlier, she<br />

also successfully defended the<br />

entire dissertation at the University<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Philippines – Diliman. (Yes,<br />

you may now call her Dr. D!)<br />

In the area <strong>of</strong> Industrial-<br />

Organizational (IO) Psychology, the<br />

department is now <strong>of</strong>ficially an insti-<br />

tutional member <strong>of</strong> the Personnel<br />

Management Association <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Philippines (PMAP) Cebu Chapter.<br />

visited Saint Paul University Surigao<br />

(SPUS) last June 24 – 25, 2010 for an<br />

initial talk regarding the <strong>of</strong>fering <strong>of</strong><br />

Masters in Library <strong>and</strong> Information<br />

Science (MLIS) at SPUS this academic<br />

year 2010-2011. <strong>The</strong> Vice<br />

President for Finance Sister Carmelita<br />

Chua, SPC, together with Dr. Erlinda<br />

Litang, Dean, Graduate School <strong>and</strong><br />

Dr. Dulcemina Leva, Quality Assurance<br />

Director composed the SPUS<br />

team who discussed the <strong>of</strong>fshore project<br />

with the USC Team. <strong>The</strong> meeting<br />

should hopefully result to a start <strong>of</strong> a<br />

new partnership for the Department <strong>of</strong><br />

Library <strong>and</strong> Information Science <strong>and</strong><br />

Saint Paul University, Surigao.<br />

Armilla <strong>and</strong> Trina Pineda attended the<br />

PMAP Regional Conference held last<br />

July 28-29, 2010 at the Waterfront Cebu<br />

City Hotel <strong>and</strong> Casino. <strong>The</strong> core members<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Junior PMAP <strong>of</strong> USC, a<br />

newly-organized student organization<br />

through the efforts <strong>of</strong> Ms. Armilla, also<br />

participated in the said event. <strong>The</strong> conference,<br />

dubbed RC10 – ―Emerging HR<br />

B<strong>and</strong>with: A Plethora <strong>of</strong> Human Performance<br />

Technologies‖ kept the participants<br />

abreast with the different ways in<br />

which HR can remain relevant <strong>and</strong> strategic<br />

amidst the economic crisis <strong>and</strong><br />

changing environment.<br />
