DOLL enters into MOA with Alliance Francaise de Cebu by Frances Mae A. Serenio The University of San Carlos and the Department of Languages and Literature signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Alliance Francaise de Cebu at the CAFA lobby last May 11, 2010. Tecson, DOLL-Chair; (standing from left to right) Alice Gauny, AFC-Academic Director and Mary Ann Farrugia, AFC-Project Manager Alliance Francaise de Cebu (AFC) is a French Consular Officer and a Cultural Institute and Language Center which aims to promote French Culture to the Cebuano community. The said MOA was signed by the two parties: University President Fr. Dionisio Marcelo Miranda, SVD, CAS Dean Dr. Ramon S. del Fierro, and DOLL Chair Dr. Charity Tecson signed on behalf of USC, and AFC director Louis Thevenin, Academic Director Alice Gauny and Project Manager Mary Ann Farrugia on behalf of AFC. In line with the memorandum, AFC will be able to conduct French classes in USC, therefore providing more options in foreign language elective subjects (FOLA) for Carolinians. The university, in turn, will serve as AFC‘s partner in extra-curricular activities spearheaded by AFC in promoting French culture not only to the student-community but to the locals as well. LIA International Conference is a renowned reputable international research forum in Southeast Asia organized to respond to the dynamic tempo of moderning and rapidly expanding sphere of English Language Teaching. languages and literature Abangan, Julius Jay S. They had the training for four weeks from two in the afternoon until ten in the evening. In teams of three, they co -facilitated the class of 25 preemployed agents. The faculty members experienced communication in a contact centre situation. Mentoring, coaching and giving feedback were parts of the assessment program. The linkage between USC and Aegis People Support would enable our graduates a greater chance of boosting their confidence, conversing with the proper intonation and speaking with clarity and articulation. This then would give the graduates a better feel of getting a job in the future. This year‘s LIA International Conference marked its 50 th year of crossing borders in English Language Teaching. The conference centered on the theme, ―World Englishes Across Cultures‖. The event was held at Sanur Beach Hotel in Bali, Indonesia with teachers, administrators, curriculum designers, material and test writers, researchers, people from industry, and other interested parties gathering round in a two-and-half-day of concurrent sessions from April 28 to 29. In a circular discussion, Dr. Maxilom, a linguist and Dr. Placencia, a Filipino professor who is also absorbed in childhood language development presented their paper titled, ―This One Baby‖: Mothers‘ Reading Strategies on April 29, 2010. Nervez ―While kaning manghatag ta’g notebooks ug lapis sa mga less privileged schools is a good thing, we must also make sure that we help students fill those empty pages with lessons that will last long after those pages have run out.‖ These were the words of Mr. Roderick Villaflor, the Community Extension Services Representative of the Department of Languages and Literature (DOLL), who spearheaded the outreach program dubbed ―Agak- Eskwela‖ held at the University of San Carlos – Talamban Campus last May 15 and 22. The program was a series of lectures and workshops aimed at extending effective literacy enhancement strategies to public high school teachers in Cebu City. Among the program‘s specific objectives were to impart up-to-date teaching methods and approaches, demonstrate competent use of current educational materials and resources, and share insights on efficient classroom management styles responsive to the immediate needs of the contemporary student. Selected DOLL faculty members conducted parallel training sessions in the fields of Filipino, Linguistics, Literature, and Speech. Panel Discussion on Standards of Collection Building by: Maxie Doreen L. Cabarron, MS The MLIS students of LIS 202 with the supervision of Dr. Marilou P. Tadlip organized a panel discussion on Achieving Accreditation Requirements: Panel Discussion on Standards of Collection Building last July 31, 2010 at the Joseph Baumgartner Central Library Discussion Dr. Tadlip and Prof. Cabarron with Dalaguete Central Elementary School Teachers and a Room. It was participated in by BLIS and MLIS students. Invited panel discussants were LIS faculty members who are trained accreditors, namely: Alvin Penserga for PACUCOA standards, and Maxie Doreen Leva-Cabarron and Cristita Lanticse for PAASCU. LIS Visits Dalaguete Central Elementary School by: Maxie Doreen L. Cabarron, MS A Semester of Firsts by Barbara Christina J. Pineda, MA In the first half of the Academic Year 2010, the Psychology Department embarked on a sharing of knowledge in the local and international arena through participation in conferences and presentation of studies. (from left to right) Dr. Delia Belleza, Chair of Psychology USC; Dr. Ces Conaco, Dean, STC-Cebu; Prof. Angela Yu of UP-Diliman at Yogyakarta, Indonesia During the summer months, a team of three namely, Leah Auman, Cholen Osorio, and Rose Velasco gave a 3-day seminar to the facilitators at the Love and Share Foundation, Inc. titled On December 9, 2009 a Book Donation activity at Dalaguete Central Elementary School was carried out by Library Science Practicum Students, faculty and Chair in partnership with the USC Library System. Pupils and Teachers welcomed the library and information science Audience during the panel discussion group with songs, cheers and smiles. The group was given a tour around the school and library. The Practicum students had a memorable learning experience to cherish. CAS alumnos Frankie Legaspi served as the contact person for this beginning CES linkage. ―Child Survival Program Facilitator‘s Training‖. The seminar was one of the first interventions undertaken in partnership with the non-profit organization helping in the formation of children from urban poor families. The seminar was designed to equip the center‘s volunteers, who work directly with the children, with more knowledge, skills, and attitudes in the psychology of child development. In the international front, The First International Conference on Indigenous and Cultural Psychology convened last July 24- 26, 2010 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. In this momentous event, the chair of the Psychology Department presented the first part of her doctoral dissertation titled ―Variations of Interdependent behavior across different social groups‖. A few weeks earlier, she also successfully defended the entire dissertation at the University of the Philippines – Diliman. (Yes, you may now call her Dr. D!) In the area of Industrial- Organizational (IO) Psychology, the department is now officially an insti- tutional member of the Personnel Management Association of the Philippines (PMAP) Cebu Chapter. As such, faculty members Vicky Offshore Visit to SPUS by: Maxie Doreen L. Cabarron, MS Responding to the need of offering Library and Information Science Education in Mindanao, Dr. Marilou P. Tadlip, Chair of the Department of Library and Information Science and Maxie Doreen Leva- Cabarron, faculty of the department visited Saint Paul University Surigao (SPUS) last June 24 – 25, 2010 for an initial talk regarding the offering of Masters in Library and Information Science (MLIS) at SPUS this academic year 2010-2011. The Vice President for Finance Sister Carmelita Chua, SPC, together with Dr. Erlinda Litang, Dean, Graduate School and Dr. Dulcemina Leva, Quality Assurance Director composed the SPUS team who discussed the offshore project with the USC Team. The meeting should hopefully result to a start of a new partnership for the Department of Library and Information Science and Saint Paul University, Surigao. psychology Armilla and Trina Pineda attended the PMAP Regional Conference held last July 28-29, 2010 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino. The core members of the Junior PMAP of USC, a newly-organized student organization through the efforts of Ms. Armilla, also participated in the said event. The conference, dubbed RC10 – ―Emerging HR Bandwith: A Plethora of Human Performance Technologies‖ kept the participants abreast with the different ways in which HR can remain relevant and strategic amidst the economic crisis and changing environment.
