1st Grand Alumni Homecoming 2010 by: Rey Uzhmar C. Padit Alumni doing the Toast at the Waterfront Hotel The Department of Economics celebrated its 1 st Grand Alumni Homecoming last July 11, 2010 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino. A milestone was reached as the Department celebrated 50 years of Economics program provision by the University. This inspired the theme of the event ―Coming Together at 50, since ‗60‖ to depict our first grand alumni gathering and 50 years of existence. Considering this was our first gathering with only more than 700 alumni since 1960, the evening started with an impressive turnout with more than 100 alumni who attended the event. The batch cohorts were well represented with the special presence of the University President, Director of Alumni Affairs and Fr. Mar Alingasa. The nostalgic atmosphere started to kick in when we opened the Alumni Memoirs Exhibit. All alumni saw their old pictures, which reminded them of their memorable college experiences. Some enjoyed in creating more experiences that night by showing their oozing poses at the photo wall and booth. We formally started the program with Fr. Dionisio Miranda, SVD, welcoming all of us back to the university. It was heart-warming for everyone to be welcomed by Math Dept conducts Stat Quali Exam 2010 by: Rene N. Argenal, MS The Department of Mathematics has recently conducted the qualifying examination for statistics to all interested freshman students with above average and superior IQ, including those first year students who graduated either Valedictorian or Salutatorian in high school. The exam was conducted last August 7, 2010 at the SMED Audio Visual Room and was attended by students from the College of Arts & Sciences, College of Engineering, College of Commerce, and College of Pharmacy. The aim of the qualifying examination is to help the department iden- P A G E 8 tify potential students who will represent the University in this year‘s edition of the Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ). From all those who took the qualifying exam, the department selects the top 3 students based on their IQ, experience in academic contests and performance in the qualifying exam. In the history of the PSQ, the University has been consistent in producing regional champions as well as having placed always in the national competition including a National Champion. Last year‘s bet – Kevin Clyde Y. Chu, a computer science student placed second in the national finals. the University President. Dinner followed in a sumptuous banquet yet we would not have satisfied our palates without our classmates beside us enjoying every laughter as we chew. Before we choke ourselves with the sweet and bitter flavour of good old memories, our attention was directed to Mr. Alex Campilan (Class of 1983) when he offered the Alumni Toast which aroused once again the inner homo economicus among us. The alumni were bursting with emotion of gratitude and pride being Carolinian Economics majors after all. The feeling of pride continued when it was the time for our Keynote Speaker to deliver his speech. Our speaker was no other than the Department and Budget Management Undersecretary, Hon. Mario Relampagos (Class of 1971). U-Sec. Relampagos did not just deliver his speech with ace, but also inspired the younger alumni and our soon to be alumni senior students. But most importantly, he shared his Ms. Margie B. Martinez & Mr. Rene N. Argenal, both faculty of the Department of Mathematics presented their papers titled ―Factors Affecting Patients‘ Compliance to Prescribed Medicines‖ in the first ever Visayas Congress on Statistics last July 30-31, 2010, at the Holiday Plaza Hotel, Ramos Street Cebu City. economics idea on the direction the USC- Economics Alumni Association should take. Aside from the usual organizational responsibilities, he focused on the leadership role of the association. Hon. Argenal, MS Mr. Argenal with other presenters during the First Visayas Congress on Statistics The convention aims to strengthen the statistical capability in researches for Visayas Regional Development Goals‖, and was attended by participants coming from Region 6, Region 8, and Central Visayas. The president of the Philippine Statistical Association, Inc., Mr. Vicente Valdepeñas was also present during the opening of the convention and was the keynote speaker. For this twoday event, 16 different papers in parallel sessions were presented. Plenary sessions on Growth and Poverty Statistics, Statistics on Health and Nutrition, Statistics on Fisheries, and Statistics on Peace and Order, also highlighted the event. USC wins DevCon Hackathon 2010 by: Mary Jane G. Sabellano The University of San Carlos team with Anthonette Cantara (BSIT- 4, John Jay Bacon (BSIT-4), Frederick Ba-a (BSCS -4), Edward Keith G. Capoy (BSIT-4), ) and, Brian Jefferson Team (BSCS-3), was hailed the grand winner during the DevCon Hackathon last March 12, 2010 at the Conference Hall, Library Building, University of the Philippines, Cebu City. Google, one of the best developers of Internet-based technologies in the world, hosted an innovation forum titled ―Inspiring Innovation: the Google Way‖ on March 12, 2010 at the Conference Hall, Library Building, University of the Philippines, Cebu City. The highlight was the Hackathon hosted by Devcon Visayas, where participants code together to ―Create a Web-based Business Establishment Finder Application, using Google Maps API. The functions are: ADD (business name, address, latitude, longitude and tags), EDIT, DELETE and SEARCH. Sabellano Global Exist Inc. conducted a summer training program for top students in the Department of Computer Science. It was a fast-paced training focusing on software development using cutting-edge open source technologies like Ubuntu Linux, Ruby On Rails, Java, Maven, Spring and Hibernate as well as foundational software development theories such as objectorientation and several design patterns. The training duration was 32 hours spanning over two months. It was held at Techbar which is located in the i1 building of IT Park. It was conducted by map with a marker and when mouse-hovered, details of which shall show up. The program has to be created in one hour and 30 minutes.‖ A project defence and deliberation by the organizers were conducted. Just several minutes after, the two best programs were declared – from the teams: University of the Philippines and the University of San Carlos. Both teams presented to the audience their programs including the specifics such as programming language, database and algorithms. The University of San Carlos team with Brian Jefferson Team (BSCS-3), Frederick Ba-a (BSCS -4), Edward Keith G. Capoy (BSIT-4), Anthonette Cantara (BSIT-4) and John Jay Bacon (BSIT-4), was hailed the grand winner. Other participants include schools such as University of the Philippines, Cebu Institute of Technology, University of Cebu, University of San Jose Recoletos and IT industries such as Lexmark, Alliance Software Inc., and iCOMM International. The USC team received Google shirts and an IT training scholarship in UP. Open Source training participated by top Computer Science and Information Technology students and selected faculty with Global Exist Inc. Yara, MS The University of San Carlos has just installed its newest department, the Department of Computer Science (CS). It has been split from the formerly-known Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, making way for the two departments: Computer Science and Mathematics. The CS Department is headed by its Officer-in- Charge, Ms. Jacqueline Fat-Yara, and supported by other administrators, namely, CS Section Head: Ms. Christine F. Peña; Infor- mation Technology (IT) Section Head: Ms. Mary Jane G. Sabellano; Systems Administrator: Ms. Maria Sheila S. Wong; and Laboratory Head: Mr. Lhar S. Gil. The department is located at the fourth level of the Lawrence Bunzel Building in Talamban Campus. Currently, there are 1,320 undergraduate students enrolled in the CS Department distributed among its six curricular programs: BS Computer Science, BS Information Technology, BS Information and Communications Technology, Associate in Computer Technology – Database Technology, Associate in Computer Technology – Multimedia Technology, and Associate in Computer Technology – Network Technology. The graduate program, MS Information Technology, has a population of 29 students. the senior software developers of Global Exists Inc. Around 25 top students of the CS Department from different year levels attended the training.
