USC wins DevCon Hackathon 2010<br />

<strong>The</strong> University <strong>of</strong> San Carlos team with Anthonette Cantara (BSIT-<br />

4, John Jay Bacon (BSIT-4), Frederick Ba-a (BSCS -4), Edward<br />

Keith G. Capoy (BSIT-4), ) <strong>and</strong>, Brian Jefferson Team (BSCS-3),<br />

was hailed the gr<strong>and</strong> winner during the DevCon Hackathon last<br />

March 12, 2010 at the Conference Hall, Library Building, University<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Philippines, Cebu City.<br />

Google, one <strong>of</strong> the best developers<br />

<strong>of</strong> Internet-based technologies in the<br />

world, hosted an innovation forum titled<br />

―Inspiring Innovation: the Google Way‖ on<br />

March 12, 2010 at the Conference Hall,<br />

Library Building, University <strong>of</strong> the Philippines,<br />

Cebu City. <strong>The</strong> highlight was the<br />

Hackathon hosted by Devcon Visayas,<br />

where participants code together to<br />

―Create a Web-based Business Establishment<br />

Finder Application, using Google<br />

Maps API. <strong>The</strong> functions are: ADD<br />

(business name, address, latitude, longitude<br />

<strong>and</strong> tags), EDIT, DELETE <strong>and</strong><br />

SEARCH. All businesses added shall be<br />

seen on their respective locations on the<br />

Global Exist Inc. conducted<br />

a summer training program<br />

for top students in the Department<br />

<strong>of</strong> Computer Science. It<br />

was a fast-paced training focusing<br />

on s<strong>of</strong>tware development<br />

using cutting-edge open source<br />

technologies like Ubuntu Linux,<br />

Ruby On Rails, Java, Maven,<br />

Spring <strong>and</strong> Hibernate as well as<br />

foundational s<strong>of</strong>tware development<br />

theories such as objectorientation<br />

<strong>and</strong> several design<br />

patterns. <strong>The</strong> training duration<br />

was 32 hours spanning over two<br />

months. It was held at Techbar<br />

which is located in the i1 building<br />

<strong>of</strong> IT Park. It was conducted by<br />

map with a marker <strong>and</strong> when<br />

mouse-hovered, details <strong>of</strong><br />

which shall show up. <strong>The</strong><br />

program has to be created in<br />

one hour <strong>and</strong> 30 minutes.‖<br />

A project defence <strong>and</strong> deliberation<br />

by the organizers<br />

were conducted. Just several<br />

minutes after, the two best<br />

programs were declared –<br />

from the teams: University <strong>of</strong><br />

the Philippines <strong>and</strong> the University<br />

<strong>of</strong> San Carlos. Both<br />

teams presented to the audience<br />

their programs including<br />

the specifics such as programming<br />

language, database<br />

<strong>and</strong> algorithms.<br />

<strong>The</strong> University <strong>of</strong> San Carlos<br />

(BSCS-3), Frederick Ba-a (BSCS -4),<br />

Edward Keith G. Capoy (BSIT-4),<br />

Anthonette Cantara (BSIT-4) <strong>and</strong><br />

John Jay Bacon (BSIT-4), was hailed<br />

the gr<strong>and</strong> winner. Other participants<br />

include schools such as University <strong>of</strong><br />

the Philippines, Cebu Institute <strong>of</strong><br />

Technology, University <strong>of</strong> Cebu, University<br />

<strong>of</strong> San Jose Recoletos <strong>and</strong> IT<br />

industries such as Lexmark, Alliance<br />

S<strong>of</strong>tware Inc., <strong>and</strong> iCOMM International.<br />

<strong>The</strong> USC team received<br />

Google shirts <strong>and</strong> an IT training<br />

scholarship in UP.<br />

USC’s new baby<br />

<strong>The</strong> University <strong>of</strong> San Carlos has<br />

just installed its newest department, the Department<br />

<strong>of</strong> Computer Science (CS). It has<br />

been split from the formerly-known Department<br />

<strong>of</strong> Mathematics <strong>and</strong> Computer Science,<br />

making way for the two departments:<br />

Computer Science <strong>and</strong> Mathematics. <strong>The</strong><br />

CS Department is headed by its <strong>Of</strong>ficer-in-<br />

Charge, Ms. Jacqueline Fat-Yara, <strong>and</strong> supported<br />

by other administrators, namely, CS<br />

Section Head: Ms. Christine F. Peña; Infor-<br />

mation Technology (IT) Section Head: Ms.<br />

Mary Jane G. Sabellano; Systems Administrator:<br />

Ms. Maria Sheila S. Wong; <strong>and</strong> Laboratory<br />

Head: Mr. Lhar S. Gil.<br />

<strong>The</strong> department is located at the<br />

fourth level <strong>of</strong> the Lawrence Bunzel Building<br />

in Talamban Campus. Currently, there are<br />

1,320 undergraduate students enrolled in<br />

the CS Department distributed among its six<br />

curricular programs: BS Computer Science,<br />

BS Information Technology, BS Information<br />

<strong>and</strong> Communications Technology, Associate<br />

in Computer Technology – Database Technology,<br />

Associate in Computer Technology<br />

– Multimedia Technology, <strong>and</strong> Associate in<br />

Computer Technology – Network Technology.<br />

<strong>The</strong> graduate program, MS Information<br />

Technology, has a population <strong>of</strong> 29 students.<br />

the senior s<strong>of</strong>tware developers <strong>of</strong> Global<br />

Exists Inc.<br />

Around 25 top students <strong>of</strong> the CS<br />

Department from different year levels attended<br />

the training. <strong>The</strong>y were accompanied<br />

by Ruselo Riva Asentista, a CS Faculty specializing<br />

on the Java Programming Language.<br />
