He has a beard and dark, piercing eyes. He says he wants to<br />
help you in your growth and learning and that you’ve been<br />
‘going through’ experiences instead of ‘growing through’<br />
<strong>the</strong>m.”<br />
That’s Gide<strong>on</strong>—<strong>the</strong> descripti<strong>on</strong> fit him perfectly. “What’s<br />
his name, June?”<br />
“I can’t get <strong>the</strong> exact sound but it seems to be Sime<strong>on</strong><br />
. . . or no . . . it has a ‘G’. It starts with a ‘G’. His name is<br />
Gide<strong>on</strong>. He said that you ought to know <strong>the</strong> spelling because<br />
not too l<strong>on</strong>g ago you saw it <strong>on</strong> a license plate. He laughed as<br />
he said that. He said that you ought to keep an open mind.<br />
He’s saying good-bye now and that he’ll see you again so<strong>on</strong>.<br />
Now he’s g<strong>on</strong>e.”<br />
So, it was Gide<strong>on</strong> again. But I couldn’t see him this<br />
time. Nei<strong>the</strong>r could Mardai. Only June saw him. But <strong>the</strong>n, she<br />
always saw things o<strong>the</strong>rs could not. We discussed this for a<br />
while and I recounted how I met Gide<strong>on</strong> and <strong>the</strong> events that<br />
occurred <strong>the</strong>reafter. June seemed to understand and, like<br />
Gide<strong>on</strong>, asked that I keep an open mind.<br />
“It’s your strict scientific background that causes you to<br />
stumble many times, John.”<br />
Maybe she was right. I was always trying to be logical<br />
about everything. In my college days, I was trained as a<br />
chemist and ma<strong>the</strong>matician—labs, research and analyzing.<br />
Perhaps, more than most, I insisted <strong>on</strong> seeing before believing.<br />
And this, in spite of <strong>the</strong> fact that I knew and accepted<br />
June and her abilities.<br />
Yet, <strong>the</strong> most successful times in my life were when I<br />
guided myself by <strong>the</strong> “still, small voice.” Some people call it<br />
gut feelings, o<strong>the</strong>rs call it intuiti<strong>on</strong>. The times that caused me<br />
