Figure 23. Reef development around Buck Island. Buck Island is composed of the Upper Cretaceous Caledonia Formation (Kc). The box pattern on the diagram represents the Pleistocene carbonate platform upon which reefs developed. In proximity to Buck Island, the earliest reef development occurred along Buck Island Bar. The reef built upward and seaward, steepening progressively over time. While it is not obvious from the time intervals shown, reefs were dominated by massive corals at 6,000 years ago. The return to massive corals just before 3,000 years before present lasted until approximately 2,100 years before present. Modified from Hubbard et al.
