Commission to sell land in Louisa county; approve liquor store leases at<br />

Osceola and Elgin; Tax Commission authorized to sign contract with<br />

Lewis System; resolution adopted relative to trust certificates issued by<br />

Security Savings Bank, Eagle Grove.<br />

November 13—Authorize payment to County Treasurer, Adel, for special<br />

real estate tax; bids for purchase of carbon paper and typewriter<br />

ribbons accepted; Tax Commission to purchase three King size attachments<br />

for Pitney-Bowes cigarette stamping machines; State Board of<br />

Education to sell real estate in Jasper, Kossuth, Clay, Buchanan, Butler,<br />

Lyon and Iowa counties.<br />

November 27—Board of Canvassers met and opened returns of general<br />

election.<br />

November 27—Authorize Department of History and Archives to<br />

print 5,000 leaflets; lease building" at 301 S. W. 8th Street for Civil Air<br />

Patrol Office; authorize an appropriation of $15,000.00 to rebuild a<br />

dairy barn at School for Deaf, Council Bluffs; Tax Commission to accept<br />

compromise offer of delinquent income tax; Board of Education to<br />

sell real estate in Lyon, Johnson and Montgomery counties.<br />

November 30—Board of Canvassers signed certificates of election.<br />

December 12—Authorize State Land Office to print 1,000 copies<br />

"Laws and Instructions Relating: to State Owned Land"; Board of<br />

Education to sell real estate in Warren county; approve purchase of<br />

property in Iowa City for University of Iowa; claim for special paving<br />

tax at Iowa City rejected.<br />

December 18—Mr. and Mrs. Frank Marsh authorized to operate cafeteria<br />

during session of 51st General Assembly; adopt resolution relative<br />

to payment of final dividend on trust certificates in First National<br />

Bank, Prairie City; accept compromise offer in settlement of state's<br />

claim—Citizens' Bank, Lake City.<br />

December 28—Authorize an increase of deposits in Alburnett State<br />

Bank, Alburnett, and Lohrville Savings Bank, Lohrville; Okey-Vernon<br />

National Bank at Corning designated as depository for state funds;<br />

Highway Commission to sell land in Story county; authorize issuance<br />

of correction patent to Edwin R. Clapp, Polk county; issuance of patent<br />

to W. H. Hall, Allamakee county.<br />

TAX STUDY COMMITTEE<br />

The Fifty-first General Assembly created a committee for the study<br />

of Iowa's tax system. It was given broad powers of investigation and<br />

instructed to report its findings and recommendations to the Governor<br />

by November 15, 1946. The members are as follows:<br />

Legislative Members: Senators Frank Byers of Cedar Rapids; Robert<br />

Keir of Spencer; Fred Cromwell of Burlington. Representatives Arch<br />

W. McFarlane of Waterloo; Harry Cox of Fort Dodge; A. G. Redman of<br />

Sac City.<br />

Appointed by Governor: Ira Lane of Des Moines, representing labor;<br />

Arthur Johnson of Clarinda, representing cities and towns; H. J.<br />

Schimitz of Eldora, representing counties; Clyde McFarlin of Montezuma,<br />

representing schools; L. P. Boudreaux of Cedar Rapids, representing<br />

industry.<br />

An appropriation of $30,000 was made to finance the work and<br />

activity of the committee.
