waiting until <strong>the</strong> helicopter was in a hover,<br />
its most vulnerable position, before<br />
opening up <strong>at</strong> point blank range on <strong>the</strong><br />

Throughout <strong>the</strong> l<strong>at</strong>e <strong>1950</strong>s and early 1960s, interservice rivalry between <strong>the</strong> Army<br />
and <strong>Air</strong> Force over <strong>the</strong> role of airpower in general, and <strong>the</strong> helicopter in particular,<br />
led <strong>the</strong> <strong>Air</strong> Force to abandon its own plans to form a number of helicopter troop<br />
carrier squadrons. 155 Almost immedi<strong>at</strong>ely <strong>the</strong> Army pressed ahead with its<br />
oper<strong>at</strong>ional testing of <strong>the</strong> helicopter, especially <strong>the</strong> now-famous turbine-engine UH-1<br />
"Huey" medium transport.<br />
Ordinarily, this would have settled <strong>the</strong> issue for some time. But <strong>the</strong>se weren't ordinary<br />
times. And <strong>the</strong> escal<strong>at</strong>ing conflict in Sou<strong>the</strong>ast Asia would eventually grow to demand so<br />
many of <strong>the</strong>se weird-looking machines th<strong>at</strong> it would eventually be described by many as<br />
<strong>the</strong> "helicopter war".<br />
