FUND DEVELOPMENT
Fund development is a critical function for the large, small or starting non-profit
organization. Securing financial support from donors is only a first step.
Understanding the basic concepts of fund development with respect to your
organization’s mission will assist in telling your message.
In this workshop you’ll learn the basic functions of fund development including
Case Statement, Annual Campaign, Events, Estate Planning, Deferred Giving,
Major Gifts, Direct Mail and Telemarketing. Grant writing is not covered in this
workshop. The workshop will also focus on the need for balance across activities in fund
development. This workshop is geared toward fund developers with a range of skills and
experience. Whether you are starting a non-profit, just getting involved in a non-profit or are
very experienced, you will gain knowledge and insight into the world of fund development.
This workshop is being held in conjunction with Lakeshore Non-Profit Alliance for the education
and development of its members.
PRESENTER
David Artley, Director of Resource Development for Kalamazoo County, plans for and
procures resources (time, money and materials) for county government priorities and
programming within its twenty-four departments and has raised $28 million in grants in five
years. Previously he served as Director of Planning and Resource Development for the
Kalamazoo County Human Services Department where he facilitated and directed the Human
Services Department and Community Health Planning while raising $30 million in grants
over seven years. As a chief executive, Mr. Artley has administered state and local
government and nonprofit organizations in the areas of human services, substance abuse
treatment, youth development and advocacy for research and treatment of chronic disease.
In those positions he oversaw organizational resource development activities (fund
development) including grants, annual fund drives, major gifts, capital campaigns and
planned giving in addition to executive responsibilities. Mr. Artley also has been a trainer -
training over 3,000 people - and a consultant in grant writing, administration and non-profit
governance (board and organizational development) having worked with over 100 non-profit
and for-profit organizations over the past 15 years.
