A Message From the Executive Director
For most of my career, I have worked with those who need the love and compassion of
a caring community of faith just to survive. Over the past year I have had the privilege
of working where I began my serving career - here at Good Samaritan Ministries. For
nearly 40 years, Good Samaritan Ministries has been the heart of compassionate care for
southwest Ottawa County. It has sought to mobilize the church for ministry to the poor,
the outcast, the brokenhearted, the hopeless and the helpless.
As a supporter and partner in this vital work, please accept our gratitude for what has
been accomplished in a passionate response to Christ’s call to feed the hungry, house the
homeless and clothe the naked. From this community come very generous donors giving
in response to a genuine love for our neighbors and a deep desire to see the Holland-
Zeeland area continue as a beacon of hope, even in the most trying times.
Throughout 2007 we continued to see the needs of families increase but watched the
care and compassion of individuals, churches, and businesses match the need in their
giving. We have seen the number of people served increase while our budget has
remained essentially the same. This demonstrates the real compassion and dedication of
our volunteers and staff for those we serve. The capacity of individuals and churches to
care and be involved continues to grow.
Lives are being changed in very real ways. Through a chance encounter, a young
woman, who is now working full time at a local restaurant told me, genuinely and with
a grateful heart, “Good Samaritan Ministries changed my life.” Several years ago when
she was lonely, struggling through a divorce and caring for her two young children,
without transportation and dwindling resources, Good Samaritan stepped up with
encouragement and resources. Now she has a loving family, good job, and a bright
future.
Thank you for ensuring this ministry remains a beacon of hope to our community today
and in the future.
THE
COMMUNITY HOUSING
PARTNERSHIP
A Journey Out of Homelessness
Three years ago, Kathryn would not have thought
that she would be where she is now - in her own
home and enjoying her family. Bad circumstances in
Kathryn’s life, including domestic abuse and divorce,
forced her and her daughters to move into a homeless
shelter. During their stay at the shelter, Kathryn learned
about the Community Housing Partnership transitional
housing program and applied. In February 2005, she
moved in.
From there, Kathryn went to school and finished a
program at Michigan Technical Education Center (M-
TEC) for her Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certificate
and found a job within a month. She has been at this
job for the last two years.
The next step for Kathryn was to apply to Lakeshore
Habitat for Humanity after one year in the housing
partnership. It took six months to find out that she
was accepted to build her own house. For a year she
worked with other volunteers to build her house. During
that time, she was able to move from the housing
partnership into another rented apartment.
Kathryn is now looking forward to decorating her
home and planting her first garden in the spring. Her
daughters are very excited about having their own rooms after years of sharing.
Kathryn says that what helped her the most during her time in the program was “having someone to
count on. My mentor was there when I needed help and was someone to lean on. The Community
Housing Partnership is a really wonderful program for someone that wants to get the help they need.”
FAITH IN YOUTH
PARTNERSHIP
The Power of Youth Mentoring
All the pressures in his life were gone momentarily.
Jon, AmeriCorps member at Calvary Reformed
Church, of his first meeting as a mentor to A.J.
A.J. and his family were going through some very rough
times. His dad was in jail, and his mom couldn’t afford
the rent on her own. His mom, sister and he moved
into a hotel. A.J. had a very hard time dealing with the
situation. He refused to go to school for a whole week.
Jon had been linking kids with mentors through Calvary
Reformed Church for nearly a year, but was waiting to
see a real need before becoming a mentor himself.
When he saw what A.J. was going through, he knew
the need was real and offered to mentor A.J. A.J. was
very excited to have Jon as a mentor. Jon took A.J. to
school personally a couple of times and that was all he
needed to get back on track.
Since Jon and A.J. were paired up they get together
often. They play a lot of baseball together and look
forward to sledding together when there’s enough
snow. “I like getting together every Friday to do fun
stuff,” says A.J. Jon says, “I like being part of his life
and getting to know him. I love hearing his stories. He
has great stories!”
The bond between Jon and A.J. is a wonderful example of how mentoring can work in a child’s life.
The Faith In Youth Partnership is a collaborative effort between Good Samaritan Ministries, AmeriCorps,
local churches and faith-based organizations to provide mentoring and safe, after-school programming
to at-risk, middle-school students. Funding is provided by local support, Michigan Community Service
Commission, local municipalities, and partner sites.
CARLINK
Linking People to the Community
CarLink is a collaborative effort between
Good Samaritan Ministries, Ottawa County
Department of Human Services and local churches
to help families in need overcome the obstacle of
unreliable transportation.
Families referred to CarLink enroll in a financial
counseling program to prepare them for car
ownership. Financial counselors come from
local churches and meet with families for several
months establishing household budgets and debt
repayment plans. After the counseling is completed
successfully, the family receives a donated vehicle
and the privileges of car ownership.
FINANCIAL COUNSELING
CO
Working Within ithin A Budget
In November Nove 2005, Theresa came to a difficult realization.
As a single si parent for eighteen years, she had never
learned ned how to budget her money. “I don’t know how we
manage aged.”
Theresa esa heard about Good Samaritan’s Financial
Counsel nseling program, applied, and was linked with her
mentor, tor, Liz. Theresa and Liz met every week focusing on
getting ng TTheresa’s
budget in order and getting her needs
met on a
limited income.
Theresa esa was working part-time but earning very little. It was
challeng enging working with the limited resources and finding
ways s to meet her needs like dental work and car repairs.
Liz found ound a dentist who was willing to help by networking
with a gr group from Christ Memorial and volunteers from
the church chur have also helped with car repairs. Theresa
now has a new job with better pay, but still works part-time
and doesn’t doe have benefits. Her budget is what makes
it possib ssible for her to get by, even with the occasional
adjustm stment for unexpected problems.
Saving ng mmoney
is something new to Theresa. She says, “It’s
good d to to have a plan and have money set aside. I never was
able to to ssave
before. Now it’s part of the budget.”
Theresa says, “[The program] certainly has done me good. d. I I really have the budget in my head. I like my life
planned out. It’s the next step toward being financially secure ecure”.
Beyond the importance of helping Theresa manage her money mone better, she and Liz have become good friends.
When they meet or talk on the phone now, they spend as much mu time talking about their lives as about
budgeting. “We’ve really had fun getting know each other. er. WWe’ve
had plenty to share,” says Liz.
Theresa and Liz are a terrific example of how a mentoring g relationship rel can benefit both people.
Financial counseling is provided as a ministry to help families milies establish and maintain a budget, meet financial
goals and repair credit issues. Financial counselors are volunteers volu from local churches trained through Good
Samaritan Ministries. Funding is provided entirely by local al support su of individuals, churches and businesses.
OUTCOME
STUDY
Proving the Power of Relationships
uilding strong relationships with program participants
B is the core...Good Sam believes that when individuals
connect with people who care, they are transformed.
Today, they have some hard data to back up their belief
in the power of relationships...The numbers tell the story
[that] change is possible.
FASTEN Institute
Partners in Transformation Award - 2005
Good Samaritan Ministries has never had trouble sharing
great stories about the success of individuals who have
gone through our programs. What was needed was
qualitative proof of the benefits of Good Samaritan
Ministries’ mentoring programs over time.
In 2002, Good Samaritan contracted with the Carl Frost
Research Center at Hope College to study the long-term
effects of our mentoring programs. The most recent
report (2006 summary) states “The entire series of
Mentoring Program Evaluation Reports, including this
report, has portrayed the positive benefits from intake
to discharge for a fairly large group of GSM cases on
many of the outcome variables. Most notably, there
have been increases in adequate employment, reliable
transportation, stable housing, and manageable debt
ratios.
The results of this report (Year 5) continue to confirm
the encouraging findings that were demonstrated in the
previous reports regarding the efficacy of GSM mentoring
programs.”
Highlights of the most recent summary include:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Debt-repayment plans showed positive results
Participants with manageable debt ratios increased
Budget skills and practices show significant
improvement
Employment showed positive changes
Housing acquisition reduced homelessness
Reliable transportation was a program success
Relationship to church increased
Pastor Vern Swieringa
THE
CLEARINGHOUSE
A Pastor’s Perspective
Good Samaritan helps us get connected with people in
need. It’s been a real joy and blessing to work in the
Clearinghouse.
Pastor Vern Swieringa
After returning from a mission trip with the youth from Gibson
Christian Reformed Church in 2005, Vern Swieringa received
an email asking for volunteers at Good Samaritan Ministries’
Clearinghouse. The idea of volunteering had been on his
heart for a while. After the experience with the youth group,
he knew, as a pastor, he needed to model for others Christ’s
example of caring for the poor. “I had to make it a regular
part of my diet in my life as a believer.”
Vern works weekly in the Clearinghouse responding to
requests for assistance. His work includes setting up rides
for doctor and court appointments, conducting family needs
assessments for churches and referring families to agencies
and organizations who can help with an immediate need.
Vern encourages his congregation’s involvement whenever
possible. He often shares experiences and asks the church
to step up and help. The children attending Sunday School
have a collection for the church’s benevolent fund. Whenever
the money is used to help someone, the children are told how
their giving helped someone else. “It shows them that they
can be used by God already at their young age.”
The Clearinghouse serves as a hub of information and referral services. Church volunteers respond
to emergency and short-term needs by linking families to area churches, agencies and organizations.
Funding is provided entirely by local support or individuals, churches and businesses.
BEYOND THE WALLS
Churches Working together in their Communities
Beyond the Walls should be franchise in nature, in the sense that no matter what neighborhood a person
begins their search for assistance, the need will be met with the same quality and manner.
Rev. Keith Doornbos, Providence Christian Reformed Church
Good Samaritan Ministries re-focused the energy of churches desiring to meet community needs to
Beyond the Walls. Beyond the Walls is a new endeavor where neighboring churches work together to help
neighborhoods in the community become more healthy and stable. Good Samaritan strives to fill every
individual and family need through the churches
that are able to meet the need and are located
closest to the family.
During this year churches have met together
to form church clusters in the city of Holland
providing a central city, west side and east
side cluster. Churches have been engaged in
financial assistance, transportation, personal
and household product distribution, vehicle
ownership mentoring, home maintenance
assistance, financial counseling, tutoring and
mentoring for at-risk middle school youth
and families in transitional housing. Future
issues include identifying gaps in service,
gang violence prevention, medical services
availability, public transportation and education
of churches and helping agencies to streamline
community ministry.
Good Samaritan Ministries total budget
for fiscal year 2006-2007 was over 1.1
million dollars with less than half coming
from government grants, one-third coming
from local private support, and some from
fees and earned income.
Local private support was received from
individuals, businesses and churches.
These private donations are critical for
Good Samaritan Ministries to support
the general fund and to access public
funding for church-based ministry. Fees
and earned income were received from
transitional housing rents and the sale of
donated vehicles.
Of the government grants, the most
significant was received from the U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban
Development (HUD) to support the
Community Housing Partnership.
Government sources also supported
CarLink and Faith In Youth Partnership.
The Clearinghouse, Financial Counseling
and the Outcome Study Project rely
entirely on local private support. Programs
supported by government grants are also
supported with matching state, county and
private dollars.
Financial summary based on 2006-2007
budget. Audit available upon request by
