To Our Partners in Ministry,
This past fiscal year has been one of challenge and change. At the end of 2005, Janet DeYoung,
left to take the helm at the Community Foundation of Holland and Zeeland. Before leaving, she
ensured that the organization had both the financial and the interim leadership resources it
needed to see it through the transitional time. In March 2006, the Rev. Michael VandenBerg
became the ninth Executive Director in Good Samaritan Ministries’ (GSM) 30-year history.
The Board and Staff’s new strategic plan was made operational with a clear focus on the
intermediary role of GSM, emphasizing the Churches’ role of Christian compassion. We are
focused on strengthening our ties with local congregations, securing a broad donor base, building
collaborations, and repositioning staff members to excel at linking people in need with Christians
who care.
We continue to excel at providing support to our Love Inc. network through Faith In Youth, the
Community Housing Partnership, Relational Ministries, CarLink and the Clearinghouse. Each
has found broad community and church-based support and continues to move the church closer to
being the good Samaritans that Christ calls His followers to be.
Although we saw our funding for the Employment Alliance end, we were pleased to see several of
our church partners continue on with the work and to see it give rise to a new collaboration helping
ex-offenders re-enter the life of our community.
Faith In Youth continues to provide AmeriCorps members to faith-based organizations mentoring
at-risk youth and providing the needed love and care to transform lives. This program continues
to grow as new partners join us to make an impact on the youth in this community.
The Community Housing Partnership was again able to assist 40 families in moving from
homelessness to stable housing over the past year. With the assistance of State and Federal
grants, we have been able to assist homeless families in the area to find not only a secure home but
also a network of Christian friends that provides a much needed support system.
The Clearinghouse responded to over 3,500 requests for aid as more people found themselves in
need. Requests for transportation, rent assistance, paper and cleaning products and utility
assistance continue to provide challenges as we search to meet the needs of our community.
For all your prayers, encouragement, gifts and grace that have allowed us to weather the changes
of the past year, we offer the exciting prospects of the coming year. Thank you to all the
volunteers, donors, businesses, churches, board members and staff that make up the vitality of
Good Samaritan Ministries.
THE COMMUNITY
HOUSING
PARTNERSHIP
Perspectives on the Journey
The Community Housing Partnership
(CHP) is a collaboration with Good
Samaritan Ministries, Community
Action House and local churches to
help people move from homelessness
to stable housing.
A
nna was raised in Zeeland by a strong
Christian family. When she was seven years
old, her father passed away suddenly from a
heart attack. From then on, her mother raised her and
her two siblings alone.
Anna vowed to not cause her mother pain and trouble
with her decision as she saw her siblings do. However,
with a bad decision and the beginning of a relationship,
she saw all her hopes, dreams and goals disappear.
She became pregnant at 19 and only 13 months after
the birth of her first son, she had a second. She walked
away from her mother and from God.
Anna and her sons have been in and out of different
apartments and have stayed at the Mission twice. They
never stayed longer than a few months.
During their second stay at the Mission, Anna knew she
needed to make a change. She applied to the housing
program. After only six months in the program, Anna
sees that she and her boys will have a better future.
She has learned the advantages of keeping a budget.
She feels supported and loved by her mentors. Her
mother is also very supportive and helps her as much
as possible.
Anna says, “The program has helped me feel stable
and has given me a place to call home. Although it isn’t
permanent, when I leave here . . . it is my goal to find
permanent housing and be able to maintain it, to be
able to take everything I have learned about myself and
raise my boys like my mother raised me—[This is] the
best that I can give them.”
Anna found the verses in I Peter 1:6-8 a couple of years
ago and took it to heart. She says, “Though I have
suffered, I do rejoice in the fact that God is being
revealed in many ways, big and small.” She feels that
her trials have made her a stronger person and hopes
to be able to help others in the future.
N
ancy Stryker has been mentoring through
CHP and Hope Church for three years.
Mentoring is a way for her to share Christ’s
love with others in a meaningful way. The Hope
Church mentoring team has been working with Anna for
almost a year through CHP.
Working with Anna has been wonderful and very
rewarding. Nancy is amazed and inspired by Anna’s
positive and good-natured attitude. She sees Anna as
a very good and loving mom who does her best every
day to provide a better life for herself and her sons.
Nancy sees her role as a mentor “to walk alongside her
on this journey forward. All of us look forward to being
a part of her story.”
“In this you greatly rejoice,
though now for a little while
you may have had to suffer
grief in all kinds of trials, these
have come so that your faith—
of greater worth than gold,
which perishes even though
refined by fire—may be proved
genuine and may result in
praise, glory and honor when
Jesus Christ is revealed.”
I Peter 1:6-8
AT A GLANCE
In 2005-2006 CHP provided
housing, case management
and mentoring for over 40
families, including 100
children.

FAITH IN YOUTH
AmeriCorps
The AmeriCorps Faith In Youth
program, in its second year, is an
effective collaborative effort
between GSM, local churches and
public schools designed to help atrisk
kids.
A
t the Bridge after-school program, Nick,
an AmeriCorps member, developed a
relationship with a student named
Brandon during basketball games. Brandon was
a good basketball player and seemed like a good
kid on the court, but Nick noticed that off the
court, Brandon showed some problems with
anger.
Nick talked to the administrators at Brandon’s
school and was sad to hear that Brandon seemed
to be sliding down the slope of negative behavior.
Nick made it his mission to help Brandon in any
way possible. When Brandon received his third
suspension from school, he joined the
Suspending Bridges program which offers
mentoring and homework help and keeps kids
from being home alone and getting into more
trouble during their suspensions.
In the context of the Suspending Bridges
program, Nick and Brandon’s relationship quickly
grew to a more personal level. Over the long
suspension, Nick challenged Brandon not only in
academics but also in community service,
vocational exploration, conflict resolution, and of
course—basketball. When Brandon began to
give up over the amount of school work that had
to be done, Nick encouraged Brandon to look to
his future as motivation. Brandon began to
change his attitude dramatically over the course
of his suspension. Nick guided Brandon in
understanding the consequences of poor decision
making and the positive value in making good
choices. During community service, Brandon
volunteered with a smile on his face. During
academic time, Brandon studied hard and
received a 94% on a recent Math test. Nick
walked alongside of Brandon as a mentor and as
a friend.
Through the combined efforts of Nick, leaders at
the Bridge and Brandon’s parents, Brandon is
learning to understand the consequences of poor
decisions and the positive value of making good
choices. Brandon has entered an anger
management program at school and he is on the
basketball team at the Bridge, where Nick is his
coach.
THE CLEARINGHOUSE
Linking People in Need with Christians who Care
The Clearinghouse is a volunteer-powered hub of
information and referral services. It responds to
immediate and short-term needs by linking individuals to
area churches and agencies that can help. The various
ministries include Care Closet, transportation, needs
assessment services, referrals and training.
J
ust over four years ago, Aline Miller from First
Presbyterian Church decided to try volunteering for the
Care Closet ministry that her church was supporting in
partnership with First Reformed, and Christ Our Savior
Lutheran Church.
The Care Closet ministry allows people in need to get personal
care products such as toilet paper and diapers which they can
not get using their Food Stamps. Each week, up to 20 families
receive this assistance through the partner churches.
Aline was a little concerned at first because she knew nothing
about computers. Every family that is helped through the Care
Closet is entered into a database, allowing the Clearinghouse
to serve those who haven’t received assistance before or in
several months to be helped ahead of those who have received
Care Closet products more recently.
Aline Miller
She went through training and read the manual provided for her
explaining Good Samaritan’s client database. At her work
station on Tuesdays, she began practicing what she had read
and it worked. She gave it a month to see how well she liked
working in this ministry.
The first month came and went, and Aline felt more comfortable
each week with what she had to do. Now, she can’t believe
four years have already gone by.
Aline actually volunteers on both sides of the Care Closet.
Besides helping people get signed up to receive assistance at
the Clearinghouse, she also works at First Reformed once a
month to distribute the products to those she talked with earlier.
Aline continues to volunteer for this important ministry. Her
commitment to Good Samaritan connects families in need with
Christians who can help.
AT A GLANCE
In 2005-2006, the Clearinghouse received
over 3,500 requests for assistance and over
60 local churches helped meet these needs.

NEIGHBORHOOD
ALLIANCE
Left to Right: Pastor Jason Kehrer (Central Wesleyan Church), Linda Pynnonen (First Presbyterian Church), Rev. Michael
VandenBerg (Good Samaritan Ministries), Pastor Keith Doornbos (Providence CRC), and
Pastor Socheth Na (Cambodian Fellowship)
I
n response to local church changes, staff changes and
providential leading, the church network known as the
Neighborhood Alliance under the leadership of Good
Samaritan Ministries took a step back to refocus and
re-evaluate. After consulting together, Good Samaritan and the
original Neighborhood Alliance partners agreed to work
together as partners in community ministry. It was clear that
continuing education and communication were important
aspects of this relationship.
Again through God’s direction, several church congregations
engaged in community ministry are now leading the way with
assistance from GSM in reorganizing the local church network,
known as Beyond the Walls. GSM is honored to be part of this
effort of local congregations reaching out to their neighbors.
Stay tuned for more on how the “good Samaritan” story is
demonstrated here in our community.
Maria Luis, her daughter Anacely and their mentor Kirk Walter
The mission of CarLink is to
support churches whose ministry is
to help families who lack
transportation. CarLink addresses
the difficulties people encounter
when they don’t have reliable
transportation. After addressing
the responsibilities of carownership,
learning to budget and
setting up a debt repayment plan,
CarLink clients are handed the keys
to a reliable used car. This allows
them to move on to a whole new
level of financial independence.
M
aria Luis grew up in Texas. She never
thought she would become homeless
and not have transportation. Every
day, she walked her 18-month-old daughter two
blocks to daycare and then she walked three
blocks to work, even in the bitter cold.
Even getting groceries was hard. Maria had to
take her daughter with her on the Max bus. This
meant standing out in the weather until the bus
arrived, buying only a couple of bags of groceries
because she had to hold her daughter’s hand on
the bus and then riding the bus home again. She
had to do this several times a week.
Maria found out about CarLink through her
caseworker at the Ottawa County Department of
Human Services. She was linked with Kirk Walter
from Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church who
mentored her and taught her about budgeting. He
helped her understand where she was spending
her money and how to make decisions on how to
allocate it. She was able to get control of her
financial situation.
CARLINK
Driving Toward Self-Sufficiency
Maria says, “What was great about Kirk was that if I
had a question, he was always willing to answer it. I
never felt I was intruding on his time. He was
awesome!”
Maria received a 1993 Chrysler Concorde after
completing the financial counseling. She says that it
has helped her in so many ways.
“Now I can drive my child to the sitter’s and drive
myself to work. I can go grocery shopping and if I
need something right away such as Pampers, I can
go get them. I never want to struggle like I have in
the past. Getting this car is one step closer to
making positive changes in my life for myself and my
daughter:”
CarLink is operated through a
partnership between Good Samaritan
Ministries and the Ottawa County
Department of Human Services.
Vehicles are donated by individuals
whose generosity is changing local
lives in very real ways.
AT A GLANCE
Of 25 new referrals received, 23 families were linked with
mentors and 18 cars were placed with those who needed
them. Overall, Good Samaritan/CarLink received 58
donated vehicles.
OUTCOMES STUDY
CONDUCTED BY THE FROST CENTER
S
ince 2001, Good Samaritan Ministries has been
conducting a study of the long-term effects and benefits of
mentoring programs on client families’ quality of life. In
2005-2006, phase two of the study was completed. The results of
the study by the Carl Frost Center for Social Science Research at
Hope College showed that individuals participating in Good
Samaritan Ministries mentoring programs increased their quality
of life according to many of the measured indicators.
QUALITY OF LIFE MEASURES
1. Household income relative to federal poverty guidelines
2. Presence of a viable budget
3. Credit status
4. Employment status
5. Education/training level
6. Housing acquisition
7. Housing retention
8. Transportation
9. Child care
10. Relationship to a church
11. Presence of a support system
12. Access to health care for adults
13. Access to health care for children
14. Access to mental health/substance abuse services
Each client participating in any of Good Samaritan Ministries’
mentoring programs was evaluated on all 14 indicators at the time
they entered the program and at the time they exited.
GSM staff and volunteers attempted to contact client families who
successfully completed the programs (nearly 45% of the total)
3-months, 6-months and 12-months after completion for further
evaluation. This allowed for the study of long-term effects of
participation.
The entire series of reports drawn up by the Frost Center since
2001 has shown positive benefits for a fairly large number of
clients on many indicators.
The results of the 2006 report “continue to confirm the
encouraging findings that were demonstrated in previous reports
regarding the efficacy of GSM mentoring programs.”
SIGNIFICANT FINDINGS
The study observes a significant increase in the credit status
among those who successfully completed programs as well as
in the number of families with a viable budget over the time
clients entered programs. Other improvements were seen in
the areas of employment status (where clients seemed to be
retaining employment longer), housing acquisition (moving
from homelessness or unstable housing to renting), housing
retention, and transportation.
Smaller increases were noted in the areas of presence of a
support system and relationship to a church. Over 10% of
clients stated that they had no support system when entering a
program compared to only 3% at exit. From entry to exit, the
percent of people who had no relationship to a church and/or
no desire for a relationship dropped from over 25% to less
than 11%.
FINANCIAL
SUMMARY
Good Samaritan Ministries total budget for fiscal
year 2005-2006 was nearly 1.5 million dollars with
just over half coming from government grants,
one-third coming from local private support, and
some from fees and earned income.
Local private support was received from churches,
individuals, and businesses. These private
donations are critical for Good Samaritan
Ministries to support the general fund and to
access public funding for church-based ministry.
Fees and earned income were received from
transitional housing rents and the sale of donated
vehicles.
Of the government grants, the most significant
grant was received from the U.S. Department of
Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to support
the Community Housing Partnership. Government
sources also supported CarLink and AmeriCorps
Faith In Youth programs. Programs without any
governmental support include the Clearinghouse,
Financial Counseling and the Outcome Study
Project. Programs supported by government
grants are also supported with matching state,
county and private dollars.
Financial summary based on 2005-2006 budget. Audit
available upon request by contacting Good Samaritan
Ministries, Director of Finance.
