Letter from Leadership
December 2009
Blessings,
Looking back we saw an eventful year – Good Samaritan Ministries celebrated 40 years
of serving our community; we strengthened existing community partnerships and created
new ones; and we served together under new leadership.
Looking back we saw a challenging year with its ever-changing landscape. We acted on new
opportunities developing innovative solutions which are adaptable to shrinking resources
and increasing needs. Our leadership on the Holland Flood Relief Task Force, county-wide
Rapid Re-Housing and Homelessness Prevention grant, food pantry coordination and
faith-based Parents as Teachers are examples of collaborations serving our community in
time of need.
Looking forward we see continued challenges for our community, region and state. In the
face of it our vision remains strong and consistent. We draw on the capital of past and
present relationships with churches, community organizations, and supporters to fulfill
our mission - mobilizing churches for community ministry.
Linda Jacobs John Query
Executive Director Board President
Beyond
the
“This is our call . . . to care for our neighbor . . . it’s
an opportunity for the community and churches
to pull together and work together for a greater
good.”
Walls
In June 2009, Holland experienced one of the worst floods
on record. Thousands of families were left with hundreds of
thousands of dollars worth of property damage. For families
without insurance and resources to make repairs the situation
appeared hopeless. Good Samaritan Ministries’ Beyond the
Walls stepped in the gap to organize the Holland Flood Relief
Task Force. Beyond the Walls Director, Judy Van Dyke says, “This is what we do with Beyond the
Walls . . . we provide resources and walk alongside families so they can help themselves.
We are empowering people to solve their own problems.”
The task force provided assessment, home inspections, connection to community resources, state and
federal funding, case management, community support
through churches, and fundraising. Several families
were helped immediately, but more importantly the
task force gave families hope. “There are needs in
our community and we need to help each other
. . . helping homeowners be safe and warm once
again is the right thing to do.” The task force along
with local businesses and community members stepped
up to create a unified ‘can-do’ spirit. The community’s
generosity became God’s hand in the process.
“Good Samaritan
Ministries has always
been there for anything
I need – helping
me financially and
emotionally.”
Ashley, while pregnant
with her second child and
trying to get her life back
on track, connected with
Good Samaritan Ministries
for housing help. She
looked for help as a single
parent and found the
support she needed. Ashley
was encouraged to learn
there were opportunities
and resources in the
community - she was
willing to work and show
personal responsibility.
When Ashley’s car quit
she connected to another
community resource -
CarLink. She was matched
with a financial counselor to develop budgeting skills and
become financially responsible. “Budgeting was easy . . .
the hard part was waiting and riding the bus to get to
daycare and work.”
Ashley can’t express how grateful and blessed she feels for
CarLink’s help. “Don’t give up,” Ashley advises. “If you’re
trying to live your life right, God will bless you . . .
Good Samaritan Ministries and CarLink are a part of
that.”
CarLink, Inc. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Good Samaritan
Ministries. CarLink’s mission is meeting the transportation
needs of families in a partnership between county government
and local churches. This mission is accomplished by accepting
donated vehicles and placing them with families who graduate
from the Financial Counseling mentoring program.
The Clearinghouse
“On one trip my husband and I drove a woman to Grand Rapids to have surgery . . . we
decided to stay with her because she had no other family,” says Diana Beltman. “She was so
thankful for our kindness she was crying . . . she thanked us with a box of handmade cards
. . . the most rewarding part of volunteering are the big, beautiful smiles and tears.”
Diana volunteers with the Clearinghouse Rides Program. Committed to this ministry, Diana not only
coordinates volunteer drivers at her church - Rose Park Reformed – but also works with individuals to
schedule and arrange rides. She also commits to providing rides herself. The Clearinghouse Rides Program
connects volunteer drivers with individuals who need a ride to a medical appointment, courthouse date,
interview, or other necessary activity.
When Good Samaritan Ministries contacted local churches to recruit volunteer drivers, Diana knew she
wanted to help. “I enjoy working with people for a worthwhile cause . . . since I’m retired
my goal is to give back.”
Diana found she has learned much from working with other volunteers, “My overall perspective on
people who volunteer has become brighter . . . if there weren’t volunteers, I don’t know
what people would do.”
The Clearinghouse connects families and individuals facing emergency needs with resources from
churches, agencies and individuals.
Did you know?
The Clearinghouse provides . . .
Rides Program - free, local rides to
people in need.
Care Closet - families with items that
cannot be purchased with food
Employment Support
preparation.
Community Housing Partnership
The Community Housing Partnership is a partnership
between Good Samaritan Ministries, Community
Action House, and local churches. The partnership
provides subsidized housing, case management, and
mentoring to homeless families and individuals.
“I went to Good Samaritan
Ministries with an open mind and I
focused on the end result.”
Less than a year ago Alaina left an abusive
marriage with only the clothes on her back
and her daughter, Mocha. Today, after being
in the Community Housing Partnership,
Alaina is recovering, getting her life
together, and moving forward. “I was
determined to take responsibility
for what had happened in my life,
so I worked hard to change where I
was headed.”
Because she felt so welcomed, Good
Samaritan Ministries was the place where
Alaina became grounded and turned her life
around. “I was open about everything
. . . my abuse, my criminal history
. . . I was accepted and never felt
slighted.” Alaina now lives in permanent,
stable and affordable housing. She is back
in school and volunteering.
“I would recommend Good
Samaritan 200% . . . I’m glad for
them in my life . . .people are in your
life for a reason and Good Sam was
there to get me grounded and give
me hope.”
Faith in Youth
Partnership
“I love seeing Johannah smile and laugh . . . she has a beautiful smile that’s contagious,”
says AmeriCorps member Jane Fisher. “Johannah helps me cut loose and remember life doesn’t
have to be serious all the time.”
Jane and Johannah met a year ago through the Map it Out Mentoring Program, part of the Faith in Youth
Partnership. They spent an hour a week together watching movies, eating ice cream, bowling, and just
hanging out. Over the past year they’ve developed a strong friendship, “It took a while for Johannah
to warm up and begin sharing the ins-and-outs of her life . . . once she warmed up though,
she can hardly be quiet . . . now she loves to tell me about her day!”
Jane has seen a confidence develop in Johannah especially when she tries new things. Jane credits this
confidence to the fact that, through mentoring, a child sees that they are unique and loved for who they
are. “It means a lot when someone cares enough to show up every week and spend time
investing in their life . . . helping them to know they have a friend,” Jane says. “Mentoring
is a small commitment that makes a huge difference not only in the child’s life, but also
in yours.”
Good Samaritan Ministries partners with area churches, faith-based organizations, local school
districts, and AmeriCorps in the Faith In Youth Partnership. The partners provide middle-school youth
with safe after-school programs, tutoring, and mentoring at sites throughout Holland and Zeeland
including Calvary Reformed Church, Cornerstone, Good Samaritan Ministries, Harderwyk Ministries/
Neighbors Plus, Maple Avenue Ministries, Rose Park Reformed Church, The Bridge Youth Ministry
Center, and Urban Youth Ministries. AmeriCorps members member volunteer for a year
investing in mentoring relationships and in the community as young
leaders.
Financial Summary
July 1, 2008 - June 30, 2009
Good Samaritan Ministries impacted the community with a $1 million dollar budget for FY 2008-09.
Revenue sources include government and public grants (55%), private support (38%), and some from
fees and earned income (7%).
Local private support was received from individuals, businesses, and churches. Private donations are
critical for Good Samaritan Ministries to support the general fund as well as to access and leverage
public funding to benefit families and our community. Public funding is received to support housing,
transportation, and youth programs. Fees and earned income were received from transitional housing
rents and the sale of donated vehicles.
Government grants from U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Michigan State
Housing Development Authority (MSHDA), and Greater Ottawa United Way supported the Community
Housing Partnership. Additional grants from the City of Holland, Holland Township, Michigan
Community Service Commission, and Ottawa County Department of Human Services supported CarLink
and Faith in Youth Partnership. Programs supported by government grants are also supported with
matching state, county, and private dollars. The Clearinghouse and Beyond the Walls programs rely
entirely on local private support.
Celebrating 40 years
of Impacting the Community
Good Samaritan Ministries began impacting the community when a dedicated group of church leaders
envisioned a place where the Christian faith community would meet community needs. What began as the
Good Samaritan Center continues today with the same vision of serving the poor, building relationships,
and strengthening our community. To commemorate the anniversary, individuals and churches were
recognized for their role in the mission.
Visionary Award
Dr. Virgil Gulker was honored with the first Good Samaritan Ministries Visionary award. He
served as Executive Director beginning in 1975 and articulated a vision for the Christian faith
community which continues today as the Clearinghouse.
Volunteer Awards
Rose Boerman, Adeline Sybesma, and Rick Schreur were honored for their faithful service to
families, the community and the ministry.
Church Partner Awards
Churches were honored for their partnership in the Community Housing Partnership including
Calvary Christian Reformed, Christ Memorial, First Presbyterian, Grace Episcopal, Hope, North
Holland Reformed, Second Reformed, St. Francis de Sales, Third, and Victory Point Ministries.
Good Samaritan Ministries looks back with gratitude and forward with anticipation expecting new
opportunities to serve.
