Sixteen Primary children competed at Dimboola, They all ran well and were a
credit to their school. Eliza came 5th in her age group, narrowly missing the
opportunity to compete at the next level. Olivia came 10th in her age group.

Well done to all of our Cross Country runners, both secondary and primary
students over the past 2 weeks who have been representing the school. The
course at Dimboola is a tough one and well done to Joe who came in first for
the WSSSA zone and 2 nd in the Wimmera regional championships and Eliza
who came 5 th in the Wimmera Region.
A number of school camps are coming up soon and through some
additional drought funding from the Federal Government, we have been able to
hold down the cost of this year’s camps. We hope that this can assist parents
trying to juggle finances. Please remember that school camps can be paid off
but we need to have made arrangements well ahead of the camp so all of the
payments can be completed by the time the camp arrives. Please contact the
school if you need to organise a payment system.
Last week I had the opportunity to hear a number of schools speak about
how they have managed improvements in their school’s data and how schools
are improving teaching and learning in their classrooms. We have already
adopted a number of ideas across our school and this year we are scheduled to
review the school’s past 3 years’ performance. Observing our data, we have
shown improvements in our school across a number of areas over the three
years but would like to achieve even better results and we will be aiming to set
new targets later this year in the development of a new strategic plan for the
future.
Congratulations to Leading Senior Constable Jim Richardson and the
Advance students for the article in Sunday’s Herald Sun newspaper. It is a credit
to Jim and his work with the young people in our region that we do have very
little juvenile crime in this area. Jim works with our students, not only in Advance
but with primary classes on general safety, with our year 10’s in Driver
Education, with secondary students on drug education, with all students and
parents on cyber-safety. He works with a number of other regional schools as
well as ours and the school and, according to the statistics, the region certainly
benefit from the time he dedicates to our students.
On Wednesday 26 May 2010 at 11:00am, Goroke P-12 College joined organisations from
Broome to Hobart, reading the picture book Little White Dogs Can't Jump to more than
100,000 children across Australia.
Little White Dogs Can't Jump is written by Bruce Whatley and Rosie Smith, illustrated by
Bruce Whatley. The story was about Smudge and his family who have a problem to solve.
Smudge’s legs are so short that he can’t jump into the family car. One of the children in the
family devises a series of ingenious ways of getting Smudge into the car, but none of them
work.
The book was read to the Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students who all had an enjoyable time
predicting what was going to happen next to Smudge and how the problem was solved in
the end.
Now in its tenth successful year, National Simultaneous Storytime 2010 aims to celebrate
and acknowledge the vital work being done in libraries, schools and communities around
Australia to develop young people's literacy and numeracy skills.
The event was organised by the Australian Library and Information Association.

Since last report on the project, the Extraordinary/Ordinary Company has been
investigating further the language of shadows and performance and stocking up
their tool kit.s
This week we worked on an exercise that helped train us to see ordinary things as
extraordinary.. Breaking up into 3 groups, each group chose a mystery box that had
a secret object inside. They brainstormed words around what they saw, what the
object might feel and what it might say if it could talk.
From this list of words they created two haikus per group. (Poems of three lines; 5, 7
and 5 syllables respectively). The task was actually to create one haiku but all groups
were very excited about their objects. Below are the results of this work. from this,
Using the shadow language from their tool
kits, they had to create and perform the
poem as an image for the rest of the class as
audience.
This process invites the audience to see the
object as the extraordinary thing it is. The
audience then gives feedback on what works
well. This process informs each students
toolkit and performance skills.
The work that the students are making is
demonstrating an incredible understanding
of performance language and team work.
On the 6 th of May the Year 8 class went out to the Cameron’s farm to learn about
dog training and Dohne sheep. When we got there we dropped off our bags and
Fiona took us out to see Darren. Darren started to talk about what a dog needs
to know and what the main commands to train a dog are.
Then he let us all interact with the dogs and we tried to get the dogs to take a
mob of sheep through to containers. We all did it and then Darren thought it
would be a good idea if we partnered up and one of us was the commander and
the other person was the dog. We all did this and we thought it was quite funny.
Then we had lunch. After lunch we went back down to the shed and Fiona
showed us some of her Dohne stud. She showed us how to fat test them and
whether they need to be culled. Then Darren showed us their big sprayer. Then
we went and looked at their tractor and seeder. After all this we went back to
Duncan’s house and Fiona gave us all a muffin. Overall it was a good trip.
The Year 8 students have been studying Body Systems in science. They
were able to put some of their new found knowledge into practice with
dissecting rabbits.
The Year 9/10 Auto class have been working on a Datsun engine donated by colley
Engineering.
The engine had been in the weather for a number of years and had to be
recommissioned. The carburetor and fuel pump were stripped and cleaned and new
oil filter, spark plugs and distributor internals were fitted.
With the engine cleaned, painted and mounted on its stand, we fuelled it up and
tried to start it. As expected it didn’t co operate straight away but eventually burst
into life (without a muffler) for an elated group of budding mechanics.
An excellent effort from the class.
The wiring is now complete and the attention of the group will switch to finishing
and starting the V8 we have just mounted on the second engine stand. These
engines will then be teaching tools to be used in the auto program in the future.
