First Aid Policy
Goroke P-12 College
Rationale:

All children have the right to feel safe and well, and know that they will be attended to with due
care when in need of first aid.
Duty of Care:
The school is responsible for providing first aid facilities and sufficient staff trained to an appropriate
level of competency in first aid. As part of the duty of care owed to students, teachers are required to
administer first aid when necessary within the limits of their skill, expertise and training.
Aims:

To administer first aid to children when in need in a competent and timely manner.
To communicate children’s health problems to parents when considered necessary.
To provide supplies and facilities to cater for the administering of first aid.
To maintain a sufficient number of staff members trained with a level 2 first aid certificate.
Implementation:
An attempt should be made to contact the parents/guardians before calling for medical attention except in an
extreme emergency. In serious cases, parents/guardians must always be informed as quickly as possible of
their child’s condition and the actions taken by the school. Parents/guardians should be informed of any
first aid emergency treatment their child has received.

A sufficient number of staff (including at least 1 administration staff member) to be trained to a
level 2 first aid certificate, with up-to-date CPR qualifications.
Where possible, only staff with first aid qualifications should provide first aid, however,
bandaids for simple cuts, disinfectant, tampons, pads can be administered by any staff member.
All staff have the authority to call an ambulance immediately in an emergency. If the situation
and time permit, a teacher may confer with others before deciding on an appropriate course of
action.
A first aid room will be available for use at all times. A comprehensive supply of basic first aid
materials will be stored in a cupboard in the first aid room. First Aid Record Book should be
completed for all treatment at school. Sick Bay Records should be completed for all students
entering Sick Bay. If the student has been in sick bay during the day, a notice should be sent
home with the student informing parents about the illness. Relevant teachers should also be
notified if a student has been put in sick bay. All accidents requiring first aid for students, staff
and volunteers should be entered on CASES by the designated first aid office person.
Relevant student medical records will be stored in the Sick Bay cupboard.
All staff will be provided with basic first aid management skills, including blood spills, and a
supply of protective disposable gloves will be available for use by staff. Gloves should be worn
when treating all blood injuries. Gloves are available in the sick bay. Any children with injuries
involving blood must have the wound covered at all times.
If qualified staff are unable to treat the injury or illness, students should immediately be referred
to the Health Centre and parents notified.
No medication including headache tablets will be administered to children without the express
permission of parents or guardians. If a student reports with a headache, try to determine whether
this is connected to an illness, whether he/she has had a bump on the head or this is an ongoing
problem. All head injuries should be monitored very carefully and parents contacted
immediately.
Parents of all children who receive first aid will receive a completed form indicating the nature
of the injury, any treatment given, and the name of the teacher providing the first aid. For more
serious injuries/illnesses, the parents/guardians must be contacted by the administration staff so
that professional treatment may be organised. Any injuries to a child’s head, face, neck or back
must be reported to parents/guardian.
Parents of ill children will be contacted to take the children home whenever possible. Parents
who collect children from school for any reason (other than emergency) must sign the child out
of the school in the register maintained in the school office.
Students should report to the main office if they are injured or ill. Any student who is collected
from school by parents/guardians as a result of an injury, or who is administered treatment
by a doctor/hospital or ambulance officer as a result of an injury, or has an injury to the
head, face, neck or back, or where a teacher considers the injury to be greater than
“minor” will be reported on DE&T Accident/Injury form LE375, and entered onto
CASES.
In the case of a dental emergency, a student’s dentist will be contacted and an appointment
arranged as soon as possible. The parent can then be informed of the appointment time when
notified of the injury.
Student records should be updated every year and parents encouraged to inform the school of any
changes to student health or medication.
Asthma plans should be updated every year or if there are any changes to asthma management.
These updates should be entered by the designated first aid office person.
Teachers should not give medication of any kind unless it is accompanied by a doctor’s/parent’s
note stating dosage.
When a student suffering from diabetes, asthma, epilepsy or any other specific medical problem
is enrolled in the school, staff will undergo annual training to familiarise themselves with the
correct procedures for individual student management. Parents may be called in to assist with
this. The designated first aid office person will ensure that a summary of student medical
conditions for each year is updated and on display in the staff room and First Aid Room as soon
as possible.
Emergency Epi-pen (for anaphylactic shock) and Ventolin available on front desk of Main
Office. Instructions accompany the Epi-pen. Ventolin spacer in the First Aid cupboard.
All school camps will have at least 1 Level 2 first aid trained staff member at all times.
A comprehensive first aid kit will accompany all camps, along with a mobile phone.
All children attending camps or excursions will have provided a signed medical form providing
medical details and giving teachers permission to contact a doctor or ambulance should instances
arise where their child requires treatment. Copies of the signed medical forms to be taken on
camps and excursions, as well as kept at school.
All children, especially those with a documented asthma management plan, will have access to
Ventolin and a spacer at all times.
Coralie Whitworth is responsible for the purchase and maintenance of first aid supplies, first aid
kits, ice packs and the general upkeep of the first aid room She must be informed if First Aid
stocks are low or in need of replacement.
At the commencement of each year, the designated first aid office person will forward requests
for updated first aid information will be sent home including requests for any asthma
management plans, high priority medical forms, and reminders to parents of the policies and
practices used by the school to manage first aid, illnesses and medications throughout the year.
General organisational matters relating to first aid will be communicated to staff at the beginning
of each year. Revisions of recommended procedures for asthma, diabetes and anaphylactic
responses will also be given at that time.
It is recommended that all students have ambulance cover and parents will be reminded each
year about the opportunity to take out student insurance.
Students are not covered by school insurance unless negligence has occurred on behalf of a
teacher or the school.
