Grimaldi Compagnia di Navigazione
S.p.A., the Grimaldi
Group’s mother company, has
launched a mandatory public offer to
acquire shares of Minoan Lines, which
is listed on the Athens Stock Exchange.
Grimaldi has offered 5.29 euros per
each share, valuing Minoan Lines at
375,198,540 euros. This represents
an 18.08% premium on the average
weighed value of the Minoan shares
during the last six months of trading before
the offer was made, on 3 October,
and equals the highest price per share
paid by Grimaldi Group companies for
the shares in Minoan within the previous
twelve months. When the offer was
launched, Grimaldi held 33.36% of the
shared capital and voting rights.
Following the approval from the Hellenic
Capital Market Commission, Minoan
shareholders have until November 26
to accept the offer.
Emanuele Grimaldi, joint managing
director of the Grimaldi Group and
president of Minoan, said: “The offer
on Minoan Lines is part of our industrial
strategy to build a solid Pan-European
alliance of major brands operating in
the transport by sea of passengers and
freight. Such an alliance – continued Mr
Grimaldi – is aimed at expanding our
Motorways of the Sea network that already
comprises Grimaldi Lines (operating
Mediterranean routes) and Finnlines
(operating in the North and Baltic
Sea). We look forward to extending its
full scope to Minoan Lines too.”

Public Offer on
Minoan shares
The move part of the Group’s
industrial strategy to build
a solid Pan-European alliance
of major brands in the transport
of passengers and freight
“If the offer is successful - underlined
Mr Grimaldi - Minoan Lines will become
an integral part of the Grimaldi
Group but it will remain a truly great
Greek company, managed by Greek
people, with solid roots and headquarters
in Heraklion, Crete. I have been
the proud President of Minoan Lines for
only four months. A short period, but
long enough to appreciate the excellent
professional skills of the Minoan
staff ashore and at sea, as well as that
of the management, who will stay at
the helm of the company. In our plans,
Minoan Lines will remain listed on the
Athens stock exchange in the same way
that Finnlines, of which Grimaldi holds
a 64% shareholding, has remained listed
on the Helsinki bourse”.
Mr Grimaldi concluded by saying that:
“There is no doubt that thanks to the
economies of scale, Grimaldi and Minoan
Lines together can substantially
increase the level of services provided
to customers, by offering higher quality
services at a competitive price. In
order to achieve this ambitious target,
we plan to push forward substantial investments
to enhance the services in
the Adriatic and between Piraeus and
Heraklion”.
Minoan is based in Heraklion (Crete), it operates a fleet of six modern
Cruise Ferry vessels on the routes linking the port of Piraeus and Crete,
as well as between Italy and Greece. In 2007, Minoan transported 1.57
West Med developments
Motorways of the Sea
A busy fall for the West Med Ro/Ro network. While the links
upgraded in late October, since early November Cagliari entered the
Grimaldi
Suardiaz
joint-venture
The Grimaldi Group and Flota Suardíaz of
Spain have forged a joint venture to develop
a Motorway of the sea linking Livorno
and Barcelona. Under the agreement, as from
1 January 2009, the newly incorporated joint
venture called Grimaldi Suardíaz is to operate
the Ro/Ro-Pax vessel Florencia. This ship is
currently operating the same three-times-aweek
service under the Grimaldi Lines flag.
Built in 2004 the Florencia is capable of transporting
up to 1,000 passengers, 2,230 linear
metres of Ro/Ro cargo and 160 cars. The new
alliance aims to develop the trade further
and, should market conditions improve, the
joint venture would in fact deploy a second
vessel on the route upgrading it to a daily frequency.
The Livorno/Barcelona Route is part of the
so-called “Long bridge” service operating
on the trades between Spain and Portugal on
the Western side and Greece and a large part
of the Balkan region on the Eastern side. The
Long Bridge offers haulage companies a single
ferry ticket for the two legs by sea: from
Patras or Igoumenitsa to Venice or Ancona
onto Minoan Lines ferries and from Civitavecchia
or Livorno to Barcelona on Grimaldi Lines
or Grimaldi Suardíaz and vice versa.
Since early November the Group
has substantially strengthened
two sets of services supporting the
development of trades to and from
Sicily. Both the Civitavecchia/Catania
service, linking the Centre of Italy to
the Sicilian port, and the Genoa/Catania
service that connects the island to
the North West of Italy (as well as to
Europe’s Central regions), each service
has been improved by upgrading
their frequency from two to three
times a week. In both cases, this corresponds
to an increase in transport
capacity of one third on each route.
Both lines were set up in 2006 and,
the Eurocargo class, each having a
capacity of up to 170 trucks or trailers
and 400 cars. These ships are also fitted
with cabins for up to 50 drivers.
Through Civitavecchia, cargo from
Catania can connect to the entire
Grimaldi Network, either towards the
Western Mediterranean (Barcelona,
as well as towards Northern
Cagliari is connected to Grimaldi’s
world through Salerno and Valencia
The deployment of two modern and
fast Eurocargo class Ro/Ro ships on
the Salerno/Valencia route, has made
it possible to extend the advantages of
the Grimaldi network to Sardinia. In fact,
as the port of Cagliari is now directly
connected to Salerno and Valencia, both
the transit time and the cost of shipping
goods from Southern Italy to Sardinia
and from Sardinia to the Iberian Peninsula
has been halved. This new operation
is expected to provide a boost to
the trades and economy of the Island.
The service has a three-times-a-week
frequency.
The Cagliari call has not affected the
overall transit time between Salerno and
Valencia because the Eurocargo vessels
deployed on the route have a 20 knots
service speed which is much faster than
that of the vessels previously used. The
two ships have recently undergone a
transformation that resulted in a higher
cargo capacity intake. Their new transport
capacity is up to 170 units of trucks
and trailers plus up to 500 cars.
The new service was inaugurated on 7
November, when the Eurocargo Salerno
entered the port of the Sardinian Capital
only 14 hours after leaving Salerno. A
couple of hours later, following the discharge
of trucks, trailers and cars arriving
from Southern Italy and the loading
onboard of trucks and trailers full of Sardinian
goods, the ship left and arrived
in Valencia 24 hours later.
Either through Valencia or Salerno,
Cagliari is now connected to the more
than 120 ports in 40 countries that are
regularly called by ships serving the
Grimaldi Group Network.
XII EuroMed Co n v e n t i o n
Switching From Land to Sea
The XII edition of the Group’s yearly conference
by more than 450 guests. Development of port
On
th
the 4 October this year
more than 450 guests including
representatives of major
institutions, ports, clients and Group’s
agents from every corner of the Euro-
Med area boarded the newly delivered
Cruise Barcelona to attend the XII EuroMed
Convention “From Land to Sea”.
The convention was again taking place
on a Grimaldi Group vessel 11 years after
the inaugural event which was held
onboard the cruiseship Ausonia. The
Subject of the 2008 conference was
‘Sustainable Mobility’ and the increasing
role ports and shipping can play in creating
a more environmentally friendly
transport of goods across Europe. During
the course of the event, the president
of the Antwerp Port authority, Mr. Marc
van Peel noted how short sea shipping is
vital for the development of Europe and
that road users should be charged with
congestion taxes based on the level of
congestion on the roads that they make
use of. Further development of the maritime
gateways is one of the key issues
to enlarge the Motorways of the Sea network,
particularly in the Mediterranean.
In this respect the Mr. Fabio Ciani, the
President of the Port Authority of Civitavecchia,
announced a 900 million euros
plan to develop a new Ro/Ro area at
the Italian port over the next five years.
Mr. Ciani noted that if everything goes
to plan, this investment will be open
to private investors also. The Group
joint-managing director Mr. Emanuele
Grimaldi, said that Grimaldi may well
be interested in being a partner of the
Port in this new development as Civitavecchia
has grown to be an important
hub for the Group, Mr. Eduard Rodés
of the Port of Barcelona outlined to delegates
the ongoing commitment of the
Port to sustainability through the further
development of short sea routes, which
by nature are environmentally friendly.
During the debate Mr. Javier Gesé of
Puertos del Estado explained the position
of the Spanish Government with
regards to Short Sea Shipping and its
plans to further promote it in the Euro-
Mediterranean area.
Another subject widely discussed during
the conference was that of the so
called Ecobonus, the grant to haulage
companies who chose to use the Motorways
of the Sea. While the former Italian
minister of transport, Mr. Alessandro Bianchi,
noted that the Italian law has nev-
was held onboard the Cruise Barcelona and attended
infrastructures key for sustainable mobility, it emerged
available since 2007. At the same time,
delegates were advised of the possibility
that other Mediterranean countries
such as Spain and France enforcing
such a tool is more and more realistic.
The Panel debate was moderated by Mr.
Alfons Guinier, secretary general of the
European Community Shipowners’ Associations.
“When one talks about sustainability –
concluded Mr. Grimaldi – it should always
be borne in mind that shipping is
not part of the problem, rather the contrary:
it is the solution”.
Allalouf is the EuroMed Agent of the Year
During the recent Euromed Conference
the Allalouf Group was
presented with the Grimaldi EuroMed
Ship Agent of the year. A
long standing business partner
of the Grimaldi Group, Allalouf
has been given the award “for the
continuous, outstanding support
that the Allalouf family and the
entire staff of the Allalouf Group
has devoted to the development
of the Grimaldi Group activities.
Allalouf is one of the historic
names in Eastern Mediterranean
shipping. Nathan Allalouf established
the family’s first shipping
& trading firm in Greece in 1919
and in Israel (Jaffa) in 1932. Allalouf
& Co Shipping Ltd became
Grimaldi’s shipping agent in 1947,
even before the State of Israel
was established. Since 1968, it
has also represented Grimaldi in
Greece where the current business
name of the agent is Allalouf
Hellas Ltd. A milestone in the
relationship between the two
companies was reached in 1967,
with the opening of the line linking
Trieste and Ashdod: it was the
first time that a Ro/Ro vessel had
called at any Israeli port. Since
then, Allalouf has contributed to
the development of the trades
served by Grimaldi through innovative
commercial approaches.
Over the years, the agent has
also conceived new logistics solutions
to satisfy shippers and receivers.
The Grimaldi Ship Agent
of the Year award was presented
by Mr. Costantino Baldissara,
Commercial & Logistics Director
and received by Mr. Ephraim Alter
(General Manager of Allalouf &
Co Shipping), Mr. Joseph Allalouf
(Owner’s Representative of Allalouf
& Co Shipping in Greece) and
Mr. Anacreon Mataragas (General
Manager of Allalouf Hellas).

Grimaldi Introduces
Largest PCTC ever
on EuroMed Trades
Deployed since last summer, the 44,408 gt Pure Car Truck Carrier
Grande Napoli is the biggest ship in its type trading in the Med
As from the end of last summer,
the 44,408 gt Grande Napoli,
has been deployed on the Euro-
Aegean Service. Built at Uljanik shipyard
in Pula, the Grande Napoli is by far the
largest Pure Car Truck Carrier (PCTC)
to have ever performed a regular service
in the Mediterranean. Being 20%
larger than the PCTCs in the Grande
Italia class - that were previously the
largest class of PCTC vessels deployed
on regular Mediterranean lines -, the
Grande Napoli has brought in substantial
economies of scale. The Grande Napoli’s
intake capacity exceeds 5,379 cars and
456 trucks or trailers, but she is not only
very capable in terms of cargo, in fact her
strong point is her loading flexibility. As
many as seven out of eleven decks are
hoistable so that the deck height available
for cargo can vary depending on the
size of the cargo itself. Furthermore, this
class of ships is fitted with two different
ramps: a lateral and a stern ramp. This
allows faster and safer operations while
the stern ramp gives even more flexibility
to load all kinds of cargo including the
loading of single pieces weighing up to
100 tonnes.
Main dimensions of the Grande Napoli
are 196.40 metres in length and 31.10
metres in width; she has 14,520 tons of
deadweight and a service speed of 20
knots.
The EuroAegean is a weekly service
(which is part of the Grimaldi Euromed
network) calling at Southampton, Flushing,
Antwerp, Portbury, Setubal, Valencia,
Livorno, Civitavecchia, Salerno, Palermo,
Piraeus, Gemlik and Yenikoy.
Longstanding Greek
ties Grow Stronger
With the largest Ro/Ro fleet serving the Country, since the
Seventies the Grimaldi Group has supported the economic
development of Greece
Through the ongoing public offer
on Minoan Lines shares (see
page 3), the Grimaldi Group is set
to become one of the major operators
in the port of Piraeus. In addition to the
Minoan Lines’ regular services between
Piraeus and Heraklion (two departures
per day in summer and one in
winter) allowing to more than one million
Greeks and tourists alike to move
between Crete and the Greek mainland,
Grimaldi has a substantial number
of its services calling at Greece’s
main port too. The Group’s presence
in Greece dates back to the Seventies
and has grown steadily to the current
record levels. In particular, Piraeus is
called by the following weekly services:
EuroMed, EuroAegean, West-East
Med and Adriatic Services. Indeed, this
means that Grimaldi has the largest Ro/
Ro fleet serving the Greek economy. In
2007 Grimaldi vessels made approximately
250 calls in Piraeus, transporting
to Greece about 160,000 new cars
and 60,000 lane metres of heavy Ro/
Ro cargo. This includes about 80% of
the cars imported from other European
countries. The major manufacturers
using our services are the Fiat Group,
Ford, GM, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Volkswagen,
Skoda, Peugeot-Citroen, Renault,
Land Rover, Audi, Saab, Volvo,
Iveco etc. On the heavy Ro/Ro side of
the business Grimaldi are regularly
carrying Caterpillar, JCB, John Deere,
etc. The Grimaldi Group’s large Ro/Ro
vessels also transport all types of project
cargo such as the tramway wagons
built in Italy and transported to Athens
in 2003 in preparation for the Olympic
Games. The Group’s agent in Greece
is the Piraeus-based Allalouf Hellas
whose owner’s representative is Mr. Joseph
Allalouf and the general manager
is Mr. Anacreon Mataragas.
Returning to Minoan, the Line is also
a cornerstone of the Greek trades to
and from the rest of Europe thanks to its
four ships serving the Venice-Corfou-
Igoumenitsa-Patras and the Ancona-
Igoumenitsa-Patras routes.
Over 800 Greeks are employed both
ashore and at sea for the Minoan part
of the Group.
More than 300 guests attended the party celebrating
the Group longstanding presence in South America
Grimaldi do Brasil
turns 20
On 29 th October an elegant dinner party attended
by more the 300 guests, (the vast majority
of whom were clients) marked the 20th
anniversary of the presence of Grimaldi in Brazil.
It was in fact in October 1988 that the multipurpose
Ro/Ro ship Repubblica di Genova arriving from North
Europe called for the first time at a Brazilian port. A lot
of courage was needed to start this service because
at that time the trade was controlled by the then all
powerful conferences and, in the particular case of
Brazil, a great part of the export products were under
flag protection. But these obstacles were not a deterrent
for Grimaldi’s entrepreneurial vision and gradually the name
Grimaldi Lines and the level of services it renders to clients
ensured the acceptance of the line by all sectors of the export
community.
Back in October 1998, during a cocktail party organised by
Grimaldi to announce the new service, a large proportion of
the guests (based on their experiences of having seen quite
a lot of new shipping companies entering the trade only to
abandon it soon afterwards), openly rumoured that this would
be yet another short lived venture. This has not been the case,
rather the contrary.
Over the years Grimaldi Lines’ presence in South America has
expanded from a triangular service calling at 25 day intervals
and making use of only three ships, to the 2008 record of 13
vessels deployed on the North Europe/South America Line,
mostly on a direct basis linking all major north European ports
to Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay and making use of the two
regional hubs in Antwerp and Dakar to interconnect with all
the networks served by the Grimaldi Group.
In addition, Grimaldi Lines has supported the development of
the trades between South America and two of the major West
African countries: Nigeria and Angola. The Group has in place
a unique, direct service from Brazil to Nigeria and Angola
served by three ships with a 10-day frequency.
Parallel to the development of the fleet, Grimaldi do Brasil has
grown also and commercial and operational staff, located in
Sao Paulo, is supplemented by regional offices in Curitiba, Rio
de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte and Buenos Aires (Argentina). Both
in Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires the Group has invested to buy
headquarter offices of the highest standard. This investment,
added to that which is continually made to train dedicated staff
is a clear indication of the Group’s determination to maintain
the leading market position and to be a reliable, long-term
partner to support the economy and the development of South
America.
Grande Ghana hits the water
On 31 October, the Multipurpose Ro/Ro Car Carrier Grande Ghana was launched
at the Uljanik shipyard of Pula, Croatia. Due for delivery in January 2009, the
Grande Ghana is the second of seven vessels of the Grande Angola class commissioned
to the Croatian Shipyard. With a 47,330 gt and a 26,500 dwt, her ideal cargo
mix is 2,000 cars, 2,000 lane metres of Ro/Ro cargo as well as 800 containers to be
shipped on the weather deck. The latter is fitted with two cranes lifting up to 40 tons
each while the vessel’s stern ramp allows the loading of special pieces of cargo having
an up to 250 tonnes of weight. The Grande Ghana is intended to be deployed on the
Group’s Deep Sea Line services.
Bateau Taxi
to Dakar
Four new bateau taxis in Dakar, the Senegalese Capital,
have recently been commissioned thanks also to the
‘taxi’ services of Grimaldi Lines’ West African Network. In
fact, after being built at Peniche (50 nautical miles north of
Lisbon) the boats reached by they own means the Lisbon
terminal where they were lifted and stuffed on the mafis in
order to be loaded onboard. Each boat was 15 metres long,
3.7 metres wide and had a weight of 16 tons.
Istanbul Metro
on the Grande Scandinavia
Two underground wagon prototypes built by Alstom of France for the Istanbul
metro have been shipped from Antwerp to Izmir in October onboard the multipurpose
Ro/Ro Grande Scandinavia serving the EuroMed Network. The overall
dimensions of each metro wagon loaded on a trailer was 26 metres in length, 2.78
in width and 4.66 in height, and weighed 56 tons. Grimaldi is a proud specialist in
the shipment of wagons for the underground networks. In recent times it shipped
the trains for the Rome metro from Spain to Italy and those for the Madrid metro
from Italy to Spain. It is also involved in the shipment of the trains for the Jerusalem
metro.
Good year for
Grimaldi Team Malta
2008 has been an excellent year for driver Joshua
Anastasi of the Grimaldi Team Malta. After becoming
the Malta hill climb champion, Anastasi won the 8 th round
of the Sicilian Regional Hill Climb championship.
ACL NEWS
Atlantic Conveyor in
anti-terrorism drill
Ro/Ro containership Atlantic Conveyor at
Berth 17 in New York recently participated
in an anti-terrorism drill, using the U.S. Department
of Homeland Security Experiment & Evaluation
Programme as a guide. During the twohour
training exercise aboard, a Class 7 nuclear
source was repeatedly planted and detected by
the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Customs, Port Authority
police, military and local fire departments
with simultaneous testing of equipment and video
data being transmitted to other locations. ACL
closely cooperates with various governmental
authorities and was chosen because of its highly
maintained vessels and dedication to enhance
all security levels.
Ikea Iway
Audit
ACL has recently completed the IKEA
IWAY Audit, that defines what suppliers
can expect from IKEA and specifies
what the company requires from its
suppliers. ACL has been a transportation
partner with IKEA for over two decades.
ACL’S Gothenburg office worked closely
with IKEA to achieve criteria in terms of
the vessel, the terminal, the office and
the house trucker.
ACL gets U.S. coast guard qualship 21
Atlantic Container Line has received the U.S. Coast Guard Qualship 21 certification for its five G3
class vessels. This recognizes ACL’s compliance with international and U.S. standards of the
U.S. Coast Guard initiative to identify high-quality ships and operations for the 21st century.
Qualship 21 certification allows a maximum of two years of reductions in port state control examinations
and streamlined inspection procedures.
ACL is committed to the highest vessel and service standards, complying with all relevant registrations.
The line was among the very first to receive ISM safety and environmental certification. The
ACL vessels have received ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Certification and are also
in compliance with the mandatory International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS).
Helicopters whirling
onto RoRo decks
The companies part of the Grimaldi Group frequently transport helicopters because
of their unique ability to carry intact, safe and secure from the elements, without
disassembly. In recent weeks three 6-tonne Sikorsky S61N helicopters sailed from
Liverpool, in the UK, to Baltimore, Maryland (USA) onto the Ro/Ro-containership Atlantic
Cartier. Upon arrival, the 18 meters long, 6 meters wide, 5 meters high helicopters,
were off-loaded, prepped and flown to their new owner in the U.S. At the same time,
an Augusta 109 helicopter sailed from Baltimore to Luanda on one Repubblica class
ship deployed onto the Grimaldi US/West Africa Direct Service. The 11.16 meters long,
3.02 meters wide, 3.32 meters high aircraft was safely delivered to the receivers.
