Principles
at the heart of a
successful business
In a business like ours, reputation is everything. A good name is a testament to honesty
and integrity over time, and to a relationship with existing customers that is a guarantee
of quality and probity for customers to come. By the same token, a poor reputation,
justified or not, can scare away potential clients, and can be devilishly hard to shake off.
I am proud to say that we at Grimaldi have always been proud of the way we conduct our
business. Of course we might be considered somewhat partial on the subject, so it is gratifying
to find that our view is shared by respected and impeccably independent observers.
Last April, the Reputation Institute in partnership with the Italian market research institute
Doxa released a report on corporate reputations in Italy. Entitled Reputation Pulse 2011,
it asked some 3,000 interviewees to grade the top 100 Italian companies according to
such emotional factors as trust, admiration and positive or negative perceptions, and more
“rational” indicators such as innovation, work environment, ethics, leadership and corporate
social responsibility.
We are pleased to say that Grimaldi scored 74.4 points out of 100, placing us 13th out
of those leading companies in the reputation rankings. This achievement is all the more
remarkable given that we do not have the visibility of a business that is publicly listed or
that deals primarily with consumers. Perhaps even more gratifying, we were judged the
fifth most ethical company of the 100 considered in the poll.
A good reputation is built in many ways, as this study makes clear. It is about treating your
employees as well as your clients. It is about taking responsibility for the environment in
which you work, and in our case that means the sea and the air. And it is about behaving
with responsibility in the market in which you operate.
This last is all the more difficult when competition is tough, and given the scale and depth
of the continuing economic crisis, there can rarely have been a tougher market than the
one we are dealing with today. Everyone is under pressure, from the companies we are
competing with on the Motorways of the Sea to the banks that finance them.
In such conditions, it might be understandable that some shipping companies continue to
run old ships at often uncompetitive rates in order to maintain cash flow. It might also be
comprehensible that banks defer tough decisions – to withdraw support, for instance, from
companies that are not viable over the long term – in the hope that with time the wider
pressure on their balance sheets will ease and they will be able to deal with problems in
a measured way.
For the market as a whole, however, such an approach becomes a cross that everyone
must bear. These are, I should reiterate, abnormal times in which we are all having to
respond quickly and under the pressure of changing circumstances. But the market will
only recover its equilibrium once reason returns, and that means obsolete tonnage drifting
out of the market, and banks withdrawing their support from perennially loss-making
companies as they move to clean up their balance sheets.
Once that happens, Schumpeter’s theory of creative destruction, in which those companies
that innovate and invest survive and prosper and those that do not go to the wall, will come
into play once again to the benefit of all. In the meantime, we intend to continue on a path
that has not only yielded strong financial results but an iron-clad reputation for integrity.
Achievements
Grimaldi in the top 20
for the best corporate
business reputation
The Group is thirteenth nationwide and fifth among
the most ethical Italian companies
In a recent survey, the Grimaldi
Group has been placed thirteenth in
the list of Italian companies with the
best reputation, and in fifth place for the
most ethical companies in Italy.
The Group reached the score of 74.4
out of 100 in the “Reputation Pulse 2011”
survey, the most important national
research on the corporate reputation
and factors influencing it. Made by the
Reputation Institute, the leading worldwide
Group on issues like corporate
branding and reputation management,
the research was conducted in cooperation
with Doxa (the Italian institute leader
in market research), among the top 100
companies listed in the 2010 annual report
of Mediobanca about the “Italian
leading companies”.
Admiration, esteem, positive or negative
perceptions and trust, are the basic
elements of the online survey completed
by more than 3,000 participants between
January and March 2011. These
factors related to emotional feeling were
joined by seven rational elements relating
to: products and services, innovation,
working environment, ethics, corporate
social responsibility, leadership
and perception of performance.
“We are extremely gratified by the outcome
of this research”, said Gianluca
and Emanuele Grimaldi, Managing
Directors of the Grimaldi Group. “This
is the result of a corporate culture that
has always paid great attention to the
enhancement of human resources and to
issues of social responsibility”.
The companies ranked in the top three
were Ferrero with a score of 81.7, followed
by BMW (81.2) and Barilla (81.1).
Short sea route
New MoS between Northern
Italy, Sicily and Tunisia
On the 2 nd of July the Group launched
the Genoa - Livorno - Palermo - Tunis service
operated by the two sister vessels
Eurocargo Genova and Eurocargo Alexandria
On the 2 nd of July the Grimaldi
Group proceeded to the
launch of a new ro/ro service
between the ports of Genoa, Livorno,
Palermo and Tunis in order to strengthen
its presence in the Western Mediterranean.
This new link, dedicated to the transport
of trucks, trailers, cars and other
rolling freight, is operated by the two
sister vessels Eurocargo Genova and
Eurocargo Alexandria. Both vessels
were designed and built by the Korean
Hyundai Mipo shipyards to meet the
specific needs of this route.
The two vessels have a length of 200
metres, a gross tonnage of 32,700
tonnes, and are each able to transport
about 4,000 linear metres of rolling cargo,
which is equal to 280 trailers, and
200 cars, at a service speed of 23 knots.
Their six wide decks, two of which
hoistable and dedicated to the transport
of cars, were designed to minimize
any potential damage to freight
during transport. Furthermore, thanks
to their ramp they are able to load units
with a weight up to 120 tonnes.
“This initiative proves once more the
commitment of the Group to further
strengthen the maritime links between
North Italy, Sicily and Tunisia” stated
Emanuele Grimaldi, managing director
of the Grimaldi Group. "With the launch
of this new motorway of the sea between
the two shores of the Mediterranean, the
Group will offer an even more reliable
service, satisfying the market’s requirements
by deploying two high performance
vessels, both in economic and
environmental terms. The beneficiaries
will not be only the Italian and foreign
logistics operators, but also the Sicilian
exporters who will have a greater access
to the Western Mediterranean and Tunisia”,
concludes Emanuele Grimaldi.
The new motorway of the sea has
a three-times-a-week frequency
from and to all the ports served.
Southbound departures are every:
- Monday, Wednesday and Saturday
from Genoa to Palermo and Tunis;
- Monday, Wednesday and Friday from
Livorno to Palermo and Tunis;
- Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday from
Palermo to Tunis.
Northbound departures are scheduled
every:
- Monday, Wednesday and Saturday
from Tunis to Palermo, Livorno and
Genoa;
- Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday from
Palermo to Livorno and Genoa.
Thanks to the new link, the Grimaldi
Group offers now a daily service between
Genoa, Livorno and Sicily, alternating
the calls at the ports of Catania
and Palermo.
Barcelona
In April the Group introduced a new
weekly passenger and freight service
linking Barcelona with the Moroccan
port of Tangier.
The route is served by the modern ferry
“Ikarus Palace” which has a length of 200
metres and a 26 metre beam. This fast
ferry can sail at a speed of up to 26 knots
and is able to accommodate up to 1,500
Finnlines takes delivery of
The first two of the six state-of-the-art new vessels
delivered from the Jinling shipyard in China
Finnlines strengthens its fleet by
announcing the deployment of
the two new ro/ro sister vessels
“Finnbreeze” and “Finnsea” which are
part of a series of six new units ordered
by the company from the Jinling shipyard
over the next two years.
On the 10 th of March a ceremony was
held for the simultaneous christening
of these two new vessels at the Chinese
shipyard. The godmother of the m/vessel
“Finnbreeze” was Finnlines’ CEO
Uwe Bakosch’s wife Kerstin, while the
company chief financial officer, Seija
Turunen did the honours for “Finnsea”.
The two ships have a gross weight of
28,000 tonnes each, a length of 188 metres
and a service speed of 21 knots.
Thanks to their four decks, two of which
hoistable, each of them can carry 3,326
metres of rolling cargo and 600 cars.
Furthermore the vessels have three internal
ramps in order to speed up the
loading operations.
With their rudder/propeller combination
technology and bulbous bow they are
designed to achieve significant improvements
in fuel economy and therefore slot
perfectly into the company’s environmental
programme.
Finnlines is now focusing on reducing
the carbon footprint of its ships across
their life-cycle. Time-planning is an important
tool in reducing CO2 emissions,
as is the optimisation of voyages and
routes to achieve the highest possible
capacity utilisation.
Turku and Lübeck/Travemünde.
“These new vessels are the proof of our aim
to offer a better quality of service and advanced
technology to our customers“ said
Finnlines CEO Uwe Bakosch. “These
are vessels which Finland can be proud
of, symbolising the company’s, as well as
the country’s, commitment to the environment
and to the generations that will follow
ours as stewards of the world’s seas and
the ports of Hull and Immingham
to Antwerp, the Euromed network is
also able to extend shipments from the
North East area of the United Kingdom
to the main Euromed destinations.
The Finnlines service offers a departure
from Hull/Immingham on
Wednesday with arrival on Thursday
in Antwerp. The unit serving this connection
is the ro/ro vessel Birka, with
a length of 154,5 metres, a gross tonnage
of 12,251 tonnes, and a loading
capacity of 1,690 metres of rolling
“Grande Costa d’Avorio” further
enhances the MEX service
As from July, the Mediterranean
Express service (MEX) linking
the Mediterranean to West Africa,
has been strengthened further with
the deployment of the m/vessel Grande
Costa d’Avorio.
The new vessel was built by the Uljanik
shipyards of Pula (Croatia) and was
delivered on the 4 th July to replace the
current m/vessel Eurocargo Istanbul on
the MEX service. This new unit has an
overall length of 214 metres, a width of
32.25 metres, a gross tonnage of 50,000
tonnes and a service speed of 20 knots.
Its ideal cargo intake is 1,500 cars/vans,
2,500 linear metres of rolling freight and
800 TEU.
At the end of July the “Grande Costa
d’Avorio” was repositioned on the route
between North Europe and West Africa
enabling the Group to deploy the
m/vessel Repubblica del Brasile on the
Mediterranean Express Service, whilst
her sistership “Repubblica di Argentina”
will join at the end of September. With
a gross tonnage of about 52,000 tonnes
and an overall length of 206 metres, each
of these roro-multipurpose vessels can
ideally carry 2,400 linear metres of rolling
freight, 700 cars/vans and 600 TEU.
Thanks to the deployment of these two
vessels, the MEX service will increase its
loading capacity by about 40%, both for
containers and rolling freight, while the
frequency will improve from the current
18 days to around 16 days.
The MEX service is dedicated to the
transport of rolling freight, containers
and project cargo and currently links
the ports of Salerno, Genoa, Marseilles
and Valencia with the ports of Casablanca
(Morocco), Dakar (Senegal), Lome
(Togo), Lagos (Nigeria) Cotonou (Benin)
and Tema (Ghana).
The future plans of the Grimaldi Group
foresee the deployment of a third vessel
on the MEX service, as soon as the market
conditions have improved.
Ceremony
on board the
“Grande Togo”
On the 7 th of March at the Port of
Lome in Togo a ceremony was held
onboard the m/vessel “Grande Togo”,
which was delivered to the Group on the
27 th of January from the Uljanik shipyard
in Pula (Croatia).
Many local authorities, customers and
government members attended the ceremony,
including the Togolese Minister
of Transport M. Ninsao Gnofam.
After the welcoming speech held by the
Master of the vessel Antonio Graziani, Mr
Gnofam thanked the Group for having
named the vessel after the name of the
country, which was a symbol of friendship
and cooperation between ltaly and
Togo. Furthermore, the Managing Director
of Grimaldi Togo and Grimaldi Benin,
Giuliano Petrellese, underlined the
importance of the partnership between
the Group and Togo by highlighting that
more than 300,000 vehicles were discharged
in the last ten years and calls to
the Port of Lome have been increased.
The ceremony ended with the exchange
of gifts and a visit of the vessel.
The con/ro vessel Grande Togo has a
gross tonnage of 47,300 tonnes, a length
of 210 metres and a width of 32 metres.
She is able to transport more than 3,000
cars and 1,360 containers.
Ferry Shipping Conference 2011
onboard the “Cruise Barcelona”
On the 12-14 April the
flagship of Grimaldi
Lines hosted the
most important
international ferry event,
on the Barcelona-
Civitavecchia route
The 2011 edition of the "Ferry Shipping
Conference”, the most important
international ferry event, took
place from the 12 th to the 14 th of April
onboard the m/vessel “Cruise Barcelona”,
the modern flagship of the Group
which operates between Barcelona and
Civitavecchia.
The conference was entirely dedicated
to the problems and challenges of the
European ferry sector, with two days of
meetings, sessions and discussions. It
was attended by about 400 delegates of
the major international companies operating
in the ferry shipping field, as well
as representatives of port authorities,
shipbuilders, shipbrokers, naval suppliers
and professional associations from
all over Europe, the USA, Canada and
Australia.
During the conference, it was clear that
the current situation in the industry is not
easy: the soaring bunker costs, pending
emission control and other regulations
were sources of great concern to the
ferry operators attending the event. During
the debate, Mr Emanuele Grimaldi
underlined the importance to reduce
overcapacity through the scrapping in
Europe of vessels of 30 years and older,
while, after stating the problem of bunker
costs, he suggested the introduction of a
pan-European ecobonus scheme, channeling
the government funds directly to
those hauliers who make use of the shipping
lines to shift trucks from the road to
the sea. Finally, all the top ferry operators
agreed that it was time to speak with one
voice to confront all of these challenges.
The 2011 edition of “Ferry Shipping Conference”
was organised, as in the past, by
BOLT Consulting and ShipPax Information,
editor of the best known and most
comprehensive annual database dedicated
to the maritime passenger transport,
as well as the monthly magazine
“Cruise & Ferry Info”.
agency for the Grimaldi Group’s services
that call at the port of Antwerp. ACL
Benelux is headed by Bernard Moyson
and is responsible for assisting the ACL
vessels calling at Antwerp and for the
canvassing of the company’s regular
services.
Today, Antwerp is called at by the
Grimaldi Lines Atlantic network services
which link North Europe with West
Africa and South America, and by the
Euro-Med network, connecting Northern
Europe with the Mediterranean. Furthermore,
the ACL service links North Europe
with North America and calls at the
Belgian port twice a week (westbound
and eastbound).
In 2010, the Grimaldi, ACL and Finnlines
vessels performed 525 calls in Antwerp
making it the most important hub port for
the Group in Northern Europe.
