CRUISE EUROPA
The Minoan Lines’ flagship is to bring
Adriatic routes up to new standard.
She will be deployed on the
Ancona/Igoumenitsa/Patras trade
Cruise Europa, the third of
a series of four innovative
cruise ferries ordered by
grimaldi group, was launched on 14
March at Fincantieri’s castellammare
di stabia shipyard in Italy. During the
spectacular ceremony god Mother
Iliana grimaldi (Mrs grimaldi is wife
to Emanuele grimaldi, chairman of
Minoan Lines and co-managing director
of the group), sent the champagne
bottle crashing against the ship’s bow,
and launched the ship down the traditional
slipway and into the water. When
the vessel is delivered in October this
year the cruise Europa will raise the
stakes on the Adriatic sea by being deployed
on the Ancona / Igoumenitsa
/ Patras service operated by Minoan
Lines, the greek shipping company
which is part of the group. The 28-knot
service-speed cruise Europa will become
the largest and most advanced
cruise ferry in the Mediterranean. Not
only will she have an in-hold capacity
of 250 cars and 3,000 linear metres of
coaches, trucks, campers and trailers
but she will also be able to accommodate
up to 3,000 passengers in 413 cabins,
of which 18 will be Owner’s suites
and 50 will be Junior suites. The vessel
is also fitted with 542 reclining seats.
This is a far bigger passenger in-take
than her two older sisters, cruise Roma
and cruise Barcelona, which are
deployed by grimaldi Lines on the
civitavecchia/Porto Torres/Barcelona
link. What differentiates the new ship
from cruise Roma and cruise Barcelona,
is the higher passenger capacity
and a new arrangement of selected
public spaces. Just like the two sister

ships built before her, cruise Europa was
designed with environmental and energy
saving requirements in mind. As part of
the Motorways of the sea the ship will
carry hundreds of trucks and thousands
of passengers every day, helping to reduce
road congestion and to substantially
lower cO2 emissions.
Talking during the launch ceremony, Mr.
Emanuele grimaldi said: “The cruise Europa
is the living proof that it is possible to
successfully combine high service quality
with “low cost”. This ship will provide
on-board services comparable to those
of cruise ships, offering a truly pleasant
journey in a comfortable and relaxed
environment and at reasonable prices.
Bono, managing director of Fincantieri. Right photo: The godmother Iliana Grimaldi cutting the ribbon
Moreover, this vessel is a model of sustainable
mobility both in economic and
environmental. This will give the Motorways
of the sea trade between Italy and
greece a chance to grow substantially,
proving that after only a few months from
the acquisition, grimaldi group’s goal is
to expand and strengthen Minoan Lines”.
To further emphasize its valuable ecofriendly
features, cruise Europa will be
awarded the “green star” certificate by
Italian ship classification society RINA,
that classifies ships designed, built and
run in full respect of the environment,
thanks to the clean Air and clean sea
notations.
MINOAN
BREAKS
RECORDS
The Group’s Greek subsidiary
minoan Lines, which is
listed on the Athens stock
Exchange, reported revenues
worth 213.8 million euros
(+9,1%) in 2008, setting a new
record in its 35 years of history.
This increase was achieved
mainly due to the positive results
of the services linking
Italy and Greece.
Adriatic Routes - ( Ancona
– Igoumenitsa - patras and
venice – Corfu – Igoumenitsa
– patras), minoan improved its
already leading position by
achieving the highest market
shares for passengers (37.7%)
and cars (39.9%) while the
market share for trucks stood
at 33.4%.
Greek Domestic Market
- On the Heraklion - piraeus
route, minoan Lines succeeded
in increasing volumes for
the fourth consecutive year,
maintaining its leading position
while achieving higher
market shares. With only
46.1% of the total number of
trips on the route, minoan
reached a 69.5% market
share for passengers, 61.2%
for cars and 48.7% for trucks
TRIPOLI
Following the launch of the nine
new Motorways of the Sea connections
announced in January,
the Group has continued to widen its
unparalleled network of Short Sea Services
in the Mediterranean by opening
two more innovative Ro/Ro routes: the
Genoa /Catania / Patras / Corinth and
the Genoa / Tunis / Tripoli regular services.
GENOA / CATANIA / PATRAS /
CORINTH (WEEKLY)
The first direct maritime service ever
to link the North Western coast of Italy,
Sicily and Greece was inaugurated in
March this year and is served by the Ro/
Ro vessel Eurocargo Napoli which has
a 17-knot service speed and an in-take
capacity of 1,940 lane metres of rolling
freight in addition to 260 cars. Having a
weekly frequency, this new Motorway of
the Sea is a true bridge between markets
and cultures. It connects North West
Italy and the European markets located
within a few hundred kilometres from
Genoa with the whole of the Balkan area.
Not only Greece and the Peloponnese
but also Bulgaria and Turkey, countries
that can be easily reached by driving
from the Greek ports called by this innovative
service. Additionally, the Catania
/ Patras / Corinth leg represents the first
direct connection between the Mediterranean’s
largest Island and Greece and
the Balkans. Here it is not only a matter
of trades and business but of culture too
as the links between Greece and Sicily
go back more than 3,000 years, when
most of Sicily was a Greek colony.
The advantages of this new service are
visible and tangible both in terms of
speed and lower costs compared with
the overland options.
GENOA / TUNIS / TRIPOLI
(WEEKLY)
Launched on April 14, the new weekly
service in the Grimaldi Lines’ network
marks a bold move from the Naplesbased
operator. Not only has it introduced
one of the largest vessels on the
Genoa/Tunis trade but it is also offering
a fast connection to the growing Libyan
The ro/ro vessel Finlandia has been
deployed on the Italy / Tunisia / Libya
service, having been previously operated
by the Group’s Finnish subsidiary
Finnlines. With a displacement of 11,650
tons, this ship has a service speed of 17
knots and an intake capacity in excess of
2,200 lane metres and 200 cars. She can
take onboard any kind of rolling cargo
plus containers and special heavy lift
cargo up to 130 tonnes per piece.
INNOVATIVE SERVICES
“These two new weekly Ro/Ro services
linking respectively, Genoa / Catania
/ Patras / Corinth and Genoa / Tunis /
Tripoli, are both truly innovative”, underlined
Emanuele Grimaldi, co-managing
director of the Group. “The first
one – he elaborated - has established
a bridge between North Western Italy,
Sicily (the largest island in the Mediterranean),
Greece and the entire Balkans
area, including Turkey. As for the Genoa
/ Tunis / Tripoli link, it is the only existing
service with a three-day delivery time
to Libya for freight from Northern Italy
and North Western Europe; it complements
our weekly Genoa / Malta / Tripoli
and Salerno / Tripoli services, making
Grimaldi Lines’ ships the most reliable
and fast way to reach Libya”.
“Another notable development – concluded
Mr Grimaldi – is that Tunis has developed
into a real hub for our Short Sea
Services. In fact, Grimaldi Lines is now
able to offer to Tunisian shippers direct
weekly connections served by state-of
-the-art Ro/Ro vessels to Genoa, Civitavecchia,
Trapani, Palermo and Tripoli”.
Sicilian links
strengthened further
Five sailings a week on the Civitavecchia / Catania route and
a higher capacity on the Genoa / Catania service confirm
Grimaldi Lines’ commitment to serve the Sicilian trades
As the Ro/Ro passenger ship
Finnhansa is deployed on the
route in late April, the network
of motorways of the sea linking mainland
Italy to the east coast of Sicily will
be substantially upgraded in terms of
both number of sailings and transport
capacity. The Finnhansa has a 3,200
lane metres intake capacity with a
21-knot service speed and can accommodate
114 passengers. Herebelow is
illustrated the development of both services.
Genova / Catania
Although the number of weekly sailings
on this route remains at three
(one of which carries passengers too),
the cargo capacity of this popular and
successful Motorway of the sea is being
increased by 40%. In fact the 3,200
lane metres Ro/Pax Finnhansa replaces
the 2,230 lane metres Ro/Pax Catania
which is now serving the Civitavecchia /
Catania trade. The other two departures
from Genoa to Catania are performed
by the pure Ro/Ro ships Eurocargo Napoli
(1,940 lane metres intake capacity)
6 GNEWS
and Eurocargo Istanbul, which has a
2,500-lane metre capacity.
Departures from Genoa to Catania take
place on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday
(also for passengers). Departures
from Catania to Genoa are on Monday,
Wednesday and Thursday (also for passengers).
Civitavecchia / Catania
From the end of April, the service between
Civitavecchia and Catania, which
previously performed three times a
week, will be upgraded to a five times
per week frequency in each direction.
In terms of transport capacity this
means nearly doubling the number of
trucks, trailers and cars that can avoid to
be driven overland along the congested
and dangerous Rome/Salerno/Reggio
Calabria motorway.
Out of five weekly departures, four will
be performed with passenger ferries:
the 820 passenger capacity vessel Catania
will shuttle between the two ports
while the Ro/pax Finnhansa will serve
the route once a week. The remaining
all cargo departure is performed by the
Ro/Ro Eurocargo Istanbul.
Departures from Civitavecchia to Catania
are scheduled every day (with the
exception of Sunday and Thursday),
departures from Catania to Civitavecchia
are every day except Sunday and
Wednesday.
Baltic link
Finnlines gets to
the Mediterranean
Cargo originating from Helsinki and the Baltic region can reach
any Mediterranean destination as the Scandinavian Service is
interconnected to the Grimaldi Lines’ EuroMed Network
Grimaldi Lines and Finnlines
have commenced the first
consistent example of cooperation
and integration of their liner
services with a new Scandinavian link
which will benefit their respective clientele.
Since early April, Finnlines’ weekly
Scandinavian Service departing from
Helsinki and calling Aarhus and Halmstad
now also calls the Swedish port
of Wallhamn, where it connects with
Grimaldi Lines’ weekly Euro-Med Service.
The extension of the Scandinavian
service to Wallhamn, (a port co-owned
by the Grimaldi Group), is supported
by the efforts of Grimaldi Sweden and
gives the possibility for both importers
and exporters in the Baltic area to take
advantage of the wide network of destinations
and markets served by Grimaldi
in the Mediterranean, like Spain, France,
of cargo from/to Finland via Grimaldi
Lines’ Mediterranean Network of ports
Boston and Lobito added to
US/West Africa direct service
Extended service to West Africa sees this fortnight direct line complemented
by weekly departures of ACL/Grimaldi Lines service via Antwerp
In response to requests from its customers,
the Grimaldi Group has added to the range
of ports called by its direct RORO/container
service between the United States and West Africa.
Starting in April, the service will include the
port of Boston in the US and Lobito in Angola. The
service offers the trade the most frequent service
with the widest range of ports. Currently the service
has a sailing every two weeks and it will be
further upgraded as of mid-April.
The large vessels deployed on this RORO/container
service carry cars/trucks/tractors/buses
and other heavy vehicles and equipment as well
as containers. The service calls at Boston, New
York, Baltimore and Jacksonville and sails directly
to Dakar (Senegal), Tema (Ghana), Lome (Togo),
Lobito (Angola), Cotonou (Benin) and Lagos (Nigeria).
A connecting service via Dakar is provided
on Grimaldi Lines vessels to Banjul (Gambia),
Conakry (Guinea), Freetown (Sierra Leone),
Abidjan (Ivory Coast), Takoradi (Ghana), Douala
(Cameroun), Pointe Noire (Republic of Congo), Luanda
(Angola) and Boma (Democratic Republic of
Congo).
Backing up the direct US/West African service
are the weekly ACL services via Antwerp, which
connect with Grimaldi Group’s unparalleled North
Europe/West African service network. The ACL
weekly services via Antwerp call at the ports of
Halifax, New York, Baltimore, Norfolk, Charleston,
Savannah and Houston. Customers in the US also
have the option of moving overflow cargo to West
Africa on the weekly ACL service versus waiting
for the next direct Grimaldi Lines voyage. No other
carrier can offer this level of frequency, quality and
range of logistics options to West Africa.
In order to provide the highest level of
service to the clients, Grimaldi’s new
roll trailers feature specific characteristics:
30 units have a length of 6
metres and a loading capacity of 60
tons; 50 units feature a 9-metre length
and a 120 tons capacity with the possibility
of concentrating of the weight
in 4 metres only; 6 units have a 9-metre
length and a 160-ton capacity; 100
units are 12 metres long and have a 120-ton capacity; 25 units
are 15 metres long with a 100-ton capacity and 25 units have a
18-metre length and a 100-ton capacity.
On completion of these new deliveries, Grimaldi Lines’ fleet of
roll trailers will exceed the 2,000 units mark, with half of the total
purchased over the last 4 years. The wide range of sizes and
capacities will allow maximum operating flexibility.
Full ahead for
Lagos terminal
The state-of-the-art facility boosts the competitive advantage
for the Grimaldi Lines’ customers
Developed over the last three
years, PTML is one of the
main strong points of the
Group in West Africa and represents a
huge competitive advantage for Grimaldi
Lines’, in that clients have the possibility
to see their cargo delivered on time
in Lagos.
In its first full year of operation at projected
capacity, the Group subsidiary
running Africa’s most modern Ro/Ro
port at Lagos’ Tin Can Island will break
the barrier of 100 vessels operated. A
target achieved without too many difficulties
given the constant development
of Grimaldi Lines’ West African Network.
The Tin Can Island facility is a state-ofthe-art
Ro/Ro terminal developed by
the Grimaldi Group under a BOT (Built
operate transfer)scheme. It has so far
absorbed investments worth in excess
of 75 million US dollars (excluding the
cost of interest paid on the borrowings).
The latest addition to the terminal, in the
course of 2008, has been the completion
of the second 200 metre-long berth. Both
berths are now fully operational while
the size of the terminal yard has been
increased to 210,000 square metres, and
is completely fenced, illuminated and secured.
A further, substantial expansion
of the operating area is expected to be
completed in the near future. An off-dock
terminal of about 100,000 m2 is presently
under development and will be completed
by July 2009.
Currently, PTML has a staff of more than
280 people; the terminal features 3,500
sqm of warehouses, 2,500 sqm of offices,
700 sqm of workshops and a plant
parking area also. Throughput in 2008
exceeded 90,000 rolling cargo units,
35,000 Teu of containers and 25,000 cubic
metres of general cargo.
to achieve the full acceptance of the system by the USCG. On
a parallel course, the unit is being submitted for acceptance
by IMO through the German authorities and certification is expected
this year. The equipment has shown the ability to treat
ballast water not only to the standards laid down by the IMO’s
Ballast Water Convention but even to the standards proposed
by the New York State for 2012 which are 1,000 times stricter
than the IMO standards. Treatment of the ballast waters is seen
as a solution to the serious problem of the importation of invasive
and alien species, often microscopic organisms, into
the waters of other nations (pictured Captain Leif Holmberg,
Atlantic Compass).
Service calls at Amsterdam, Hamburg,
Tilbury, Antwerp, Le Havre, Lisbon,
Dakar, Pointe Noire, Luanda and Douala.
The class of ships to which the Grande
Ghana belongs, represents a clear example
of how operational flexibility can
be achieved with the aim of providing a
better service to the clientele. By utilising
the longstanding expertise of the Group,
the ship is designed and built in such
a way to be able to accommodate any
kind of rolling, containerised and project
cargo. Her ideal intake is 2,000 cars/
vans, 2,000 linear metres of heavy Ro/
Ro units and 800 containers. The latter
are loaded on the weather deck, which is
fitted with a pair of 40-tonne cranes. The
vessel’s stern ramp, allows cargo of up
to 250 tonnes weight to be loaded. Her
service speed is in excess of 20 knots.
A very special
cancre-cure
shipment
ACL was called upon to deliver two
proton therapy component parts for
a proton beam radiation therapy centre
due to be inaugurated in Virginia next
year. Dimensions of these very special
pieces of cargo were, respectively, 4.68
m x 4.72 m x 2.96 m and a weight of 114.5
tonnes and 4.80 m x 4.72 m x 1.92 m with
a weight of 109.2 tonnes. Before sailing
from Antwerp to Portsmouth (Virginia, US)
they were securely lashed to ACL’s standard
40’ roll trailers and driven directly onto one of the three main Ro/Ro decks of the Atlantic Conveyor. The parts will be used
in a massive 200-ton cyclotron that will spin subatomic particles to two-thirds of the speed of light, sending the resulting proton
beam through a beam line to 90-ton gantries making the proton ready for patient treatment. The Virginia facility is expected to
open in 2010. This state-of-the-art cancer treatment centre will be one of only ten in the United States.
Award for
Jacky Allalouf
The Israel Shipping Chamber presented
Jacky Allalouf, President of the
Allalouf Group, Grimaldi Lines’ agent
in Israel, with its Lifetime Achievement
Award in recognition of his contribution
over the span of many years to the shipping
industry. The award was presented
by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of
Transportation and Road Safety, Shaul
Mofaz, and the President of the Israel
Shipping Chamber Reuven Zuck.
Jacky Allalouf made many innovations,
such as changing the method of transporting
vehicles to Israel from using conventional
carriers to using Ro/Ro ships
and by improving shipping methods
such as the combination of sea and land
transportation.
Mobile houses
on grande
Portogallo
Two pre-constructed mobile houses were
recently loaded onboard the m/v Grande
Portogallo sailing from Lisbon to Luanda. Grimaldi Lines’ PCTC vessels were the
natural choice for this kind of cargo as each mobile house is 8.74 metres long, 4.0
metres wide, 3.5 metres high and weighs 3.8 tonnes. After a exhaustive study of
the vessel’s ramps and ground clearance of the houses, extra wheels had to be designed
and adapted to provide safe handling. Mobile-houses are delivered alongside
without wheels, which are assembled in the port just alongside the vessel in order
to be loaded onboard through the ship’s stern ramp. Mobile houses are supplied
ready to use, allowing a rather quick and easy installation at the final site.
Huge Rotor to Israel
In March of this year a 95-ton rotor was shipped from the UK to Israel onboard the
multipurpose Ro/Ro vessel Gran Bretagna, which is deployed on the Euro-Med
Service. In Southampton, the 23.4-metre long piece of cargo was loaded onboard
by means of an unusually large towing vehicle, fitted with as many as 9 axles. The
rotor was imported in Israel for use in the Eshkol power station in Ashdod.
