Mediterranean
Cruise Barcelona
is delivered
The new Cruise Ferry joins the Cruise Roma to serve the busiest route of the Motorways
of the Sea in the Mediterranean. Yearly capacity up to 100,000 trucks and trailers
The largest and most environmentally
friendly Cruise Ferry
twins in the Mediterranean have
finally both entered the service on the
daily route linking Civitavecchia, the
port of Rome, to Barcelona, the Catalan
capital.
Deployment of the Cruise Barcelona
took place in early September, five
months after her sistership. It completed
a four-year development programme
for the Civitavecchia/Barcelona
route that commenced in 2004
when the Eurostar Roma marked the
opening of the maritime link between
the two most populated regions in
Western Mediterranean. Now that the
projected transport capacity on the
route has been reached, the Group expects
to transport up to 100,000 trucks
and trailers every year, shifting them
from the overcongested roads linking
the two regions.
Aggregate cost of the Cruise Roma and
Cruise Barcelona stands at 300 million
euros, which is the largest investment
ever made in the Mediterranean to
serve a single route. “Investing to develop
the Motorways of the Sea means
to invest for the future of Europe and
it is also an act of corporate social responsibility”
commented Emanuele
Grimaldi, joint managing director of
the Grimaldi Group. “These ships are
the most environmentally friendly solution
for travel between Rome and Barcelona.
In fact, they cut by at least 40%
the emissions of CO2 when compared
to road transport (for trucks) and air
transport (for passengers)”.
It should be emphasised that travelling
by sea with these ships is a real
low cost, no hassle solution. Not only
is passage onboard the Cruise Barcelona
and the Cruise Roma cheaper
than reaching the same destination by
road, but the vessels offer amenities
like those of true cruiseships such as a
Casino, a large Spa and a disco, as well
as an a-la-carte restaurant, a number of
bars and the Smaila’s show lounge.
Additionally, truck drivers can enjoy a
dedicated ‘Driver’s Club’, which also
includes a smoking area.
The Cruise Roma and Cruise Barcelona
have a 55.000-GT, each with a
transport capacity of 2,300 passengers,
215 cars and 3,000 lane metres
of rolling cargoes, i.e. trucks, trailers
and buses.
Developments
Marco Polo explores
the Mediterranean
Two Grimaldi projects awarded EU funding for their aim
to shift cargo off the congested European road network
Two Grimaldi Group projects have
been approved in the framework
of the Marco Polo Programme II
of the European Union whose aim is to
promote alternative modes of transport
to road. The projects awarded with the
founding from the EU are called “West
Med Bridge” and “Albatrosss”. They
will shift about 4,7 billion ton/km from
the road to the sea producing total environmental
benefits of €135 million.
The “West Med Bridge” objective is to
significantly upgrade the Civitavecchia-
Barcelona link for the transport of passengers,
trailers, semi-trailers and other
rolling cargo through the replacement of
older and smaller ferries with the cruise
ferries Cruise Roma and Cruise Barcelona.
The aggregate loading capacity
of the two vessels is over 60% higher
compared with the vessels that they are
due to replace while fuel consumption
is only 10% higher. Other than very energy-efficient
these ships are amongst
the fastest and most comfortable ships
of their type in the Mediterranean The
service is intended to be a valid alternative
to road transport between Italy and
Spain, including Portugal.
“Albatrosss’” aim, instead, is focused on
the creation of the first regular maritime
link between Livorno (Italy) and Barcelona
(Spain) for the transport of trailers,
semi-trailers and other rolling cargo.
The project is an innovative and valid alternative
to the crossing via the Alps and
Pyrenees both for freight transported
between Italy and Spain and for transit
freight through these countries to/from
Central Europe.
The vessel deployed on the route is
the 2004-built ferry Florencia, whose
maximum loading capacity is in excess
of 150 trailers and 600 cars. With a
maximum speed of 23 knots and a ramp
capacity of 65 tonnes, the Florencia also
offers 97 passenger cabins. During the
third year of operation, a second ro/pax
vessel is expected to be deployed on
the Livorno-Barcelona route in order to
double the frequency and the capacity
of the service.
The two projects will contribute, with
their ecologically compatible services,
to reduce road congestion, to promote
transport safety and to protect the environment.
Black Sea is now part of the Network
The West-East Service extended to Sevastopol and Ilychevsk to satisfy clients
In late August, the Group extended its European
Short Sea network to the Black Sea, so completing
an extended network of ports and routes
that goes from St. Petersburg, in the Baltic Sea, to
Sevastopol and Ilychevsk, both along the Ukrainian
coast of the Black Sea.
The move resulted from an extension to the existing
West-East Med Ro/Ro Multipurpose service.
The weekly service is in fact now delivering to
Sevastopol and Ilychevsk cars produced elsewhere
in Europe and is served by large, modern
‘Grande’ class vessels which have an approximate
4,650 car capacity. The first Grimaldi Lines vessel
to cross the Bosphorus was the Grande Spagna
in August this year.
Atlantic Ne t w o r k
West Africa to the US
Service is strengthened
Cocoa and other commodities either in 20’ or 40’ containers
car now reach New York in only 13 days
As from May, Grimaldi Lines’
West Africa to USA direct service
has been doubled in capacity
and frequency as the multipurpose
ro/ro carrier Repubblica di Roma
has joined her sistership Repubblica di
Amalfi on the trade.
The service was originally launched in
November 2006 and initially the cargo
flow was almost completely southbound.
The strength of Grimaldi’s own agency
network in West Africa has however
filled the gap and the West Africa / US
service is now running with full capacity
in both directions.
In this new set up, the service has a
bi-monthly frequency with the following
round trip: New York, Dakar, Lagos,
Lome, Tema, Cotonou, Abidjan, San
Pedro, Baltimore and back to New York.
Transit time is 13 days between the last
port of loading in West Africa and the
first port of discharge in the USA which
is favourable for cocoa beans and cocoa
product, the main commodities currently
shipped on this service. These sensitive
commodities are being shipped
in 20’ and 40’ containers, on FCL/FCL
terms, although dressing material is
provided for the cocoa beans.
The improvement of the service provides
more regularity, allowing customers
to ship in smaller lots, and therefore
avoiding the expense and uncertainty
of having to stockpile cocoa to induce
bulk vessels.
In New York, the beans are discharged
at ASI, a recognised cocoa terminal,
with good opportunities for on-carriage
to the warehouses located in New Jersey,
while haulage to locations as far as
Canada is also offered. As well as New
York, Baltimore also has a good range
of inland connections and cocoa warehouses
close by.
Container depot and
repair facility in Antwerp
ACR is a new service offered by AET,
the Group’s North European hub
Established at the beginning of
this year, Antwerp Container
Repair (ACR) is a business
activity set up by the Group within its
North European hub, Antwerp Euroterminal.
ACR aims to complete the set
of services offered by AET. The ACR
facility has a 2,500 square metres surface
with a 600 square metres
warehouse, where any kind
of containers can be stored,
maintained and repaired.
This includes reefers as ACR
is fitted with 24 reefer plugs. The ACR
compound is equipped with 1 Fantuzzi
Spreader, 1 Kalmar stacker and 3 forklifts
while its water cleaning installations
meet all the tightest environmental
regulations.
Continuous investments in labour organisation
and the ACR modern equipment
maximise the performance in
terms of container diagnosis and customising
while the data system provides
all required reports related to stock
and container movements. ACR has
already reached the target number of
1,000 containers repaired every month
but it is improving its productivity further.
AET handles about 100,000 teu
per year and other than by ship is also
accessible through barge and rail.
Grimaldi a proud sponsor
of the Antwerp Port Day
The event attracted more than 38,000 visitors.
Grimaldi Belgium, AET and Finnlines played an active role
In the role of prominent stakeholder
of the port of Antwerp, the Grimaldi
Group was a major sponsor of the
Antwerp Port Day, held on 5 July. This
initiative was part of the broader Flemish
Port Day promoted by Mr. Kris Peeters,
the Prime Minister of the Flemish government
and Minister of the ports. The
Flemish Port day, organised in the four
Flemish seaports (Antwerp, Zeebrugge,
Ostend, Ghent) offered a unique opportunity
for the general public to visit
behind-the-scenes of several terminals,
docks, locks, warehouses and distribution
centres. The event accentuated the
diversity of the port activities and equally
promoted the multiple assets of the Port
of Antwerp, its central location and excellent
hinterland connections, specialised
8 GNEWS
logistics expertise and key role in the ro/
ro traffic, project and steel market.
Besides the infrastructural and operational
aspects of the port sector, the
growing demand for highly productive
experienced, multilingual personnel
was put in the spotlight. At the Job Fair,
the latter evoked a large interest and
showed the strong desire for information
from the public for shipping and logistics
activities.
The Job Fair illuminated the high diversity
of employment opportunities, and
in to this respect the Antwerp Shipping
Association will run a long term recruitment
campaign with the aim to interest
students in a shipping career and as such
react to the tight labour market envisaged
in the coming years.
Within the scope of this event three
Grimaldi Group companies, namely
Antwerp Euroterminal (AET), Grimaldi
Belgium and Finnlines were present
at the job fair while the AET terminal
was open to the public, so profiling the
Group’s activities.
This event definitely contributed to a positive
image-building for the port sector
and showed that the consistent growth in
the shipping trade has highly diversified
and qualified the range of shipping and
logistics services. The Antwerp Port day
was supported by an extensive media
campaign, with animation and a VIP evening
for clients, with more than 38,000
people visiting the event which resulted
in an unequalled success.

Finnlines’ Finnstar
tested the route
to Vuosaari Harbour
The new port of Helsinki is set to be opened in November.
The Group’s subsidiary Finnsteve to operate 70 hectares,
including container and ro/ro terminals
Finnlines’ state-of-the-art ro/ro
vessel Finnstar was the first
large cargo ship to sail the new
route to the Vuosaari Harbour in Helsinki.
On her first journey to Vuosaari,
Finnstar had some 50 guests onboard,
including authorities and representatives
of the National media.
Vuosaari Harbour will be Finland’s new
main port for foreign trade when regular
traffic begins in November 2008.
Ships will reach the new port along
a 32-kilometre fairway starting at the
Helsinki lighthouse.
The fairway has a minimum width of
200 metres and a minimum depth of
12.5 metres and farther out 13.0 metres.
This corresponds to an operating
draught of 11.0 metres. Traffic will be
in both directions except for a stretch
of about 10 kilometres, which will have
a meeting point for anchorage halfway.
Ships less than 25 metres wide can
pass each other in this stretch.
Everything went well in Vuosaari on
July 21, as the m/v Finnstar berthed
without any difficulties at the brandnew
two-storey ramp. The ramp can be
adjusted according to the type of ship
and the tide of the water. An automated
system will ensure safety, guide the
hydraulic cylinders lifting the ramps
and locking them in place. In the port
the Finnstar was testing both stern and
bow doors/ramps and they worked as
planned with the ramp ashore.
The port operator Finnsteve Oy Ab,
wholly owned by Finnlines will centralize
its operations in Helsinki. Services
from Helsinki’s West and the North
harbours will move to Vuosaari Harbour
Centre. The move will take place
at the end of November 2008, when
Finnsteve’s straddle carriers, reach
stackers, tugmasters and other machinery
will transfer to the new harbour.
Finnsteve has a 70-hectare base to provide
a full range of services for container,
trailer and lorry traffic in the eastern
sector of this unique all-in-one port.
There will be ramps for 10 ro/ro ferries
and 750 metres of quay length for
container ships. Two of the ramps will
be twin level type to gain simultaneous
access to two decks of the ferry.
