Some 400 guests, representing European and National Institutions, clients, the leading transport and shipping publications in Europe as well as the Group’s agents in the Euro-Med area will board the new Cruise Ferry in Civitavecchia on 4 October. The Convention itself will take place on 5 October while the ship will be sailing to Barcelona and will focus on “Sustainable mobility” one of the key issues to be addressed in order to guarantee a smooth development of the European countries. Upon arrival, the vessel will be introduced to the leading Spanish clients and to local representatives of the National and travel press. Mediterranean Cruise Barcelona is delivered The new Cruise Ferry joins the Cruise Roma to serve the busiest route of the Motorways of the Sea in the Mediterranean. Yearly capacity up to 100,000 trucks and trailers The largest and most environmentally friendly Cruise Ferry twins in the Mediterranean have finally both entered the service on the daily route linking Civitavecchia, the port of Rome, to Barcelona, the Catalan capital. Deployment of the Cruise Barcelona took place in early September, five months after her sistership. It completed a four-year development programme for the Civitavecchia/Barcelona route that commenced in 2004 when the Eurostar Roma marked the opening of the maritime link between the two most populated regions in Western Mediterranean. Now that the projected transport capacity on the route has been reached, the Group expects to transport up to 100,000 trucks and trailers every year, shifting them from the overcongested roads linking the two regions. Aggregate cost of the Cruise Roma and Cruise Barcelona stands at 300 million euros, which is the largest investment ever made in the Mediterranean to serve a single route. “Investing to develop the Motorways of the Sea means to invest for the future of Europe and it is also an act of corporate social responsibility” commented Emanuele Grimaldi, joint managing director of the Grimaldi Group. “These ships are the most environmentally friendly solution for travel between Rome and Barcelona. In fact, they cut by at least 40% the emissions of CO2 when compared to road transport (for trucks) and air transport (for passengers)”. It should be emphasised that travelling by sea with these ships is a real low cost, no hassle solution. Not only is passage onboard the Cruise Barcelona and the Cruise Roma cheaper than reaching the same destination by road, but the vessels offer amenities like those of true cruiseships such as a Casino, a large Spa and a disco, as well as an a-la-carte restaurant, a number of bars and the Smaila’s show lounge. Additionally, truck drivers can enjoy a dedicated ‘Driver’s Club’, which also includes a smoking area. The Cruise Roma and Cruise Barcelona have a 55.000-GT, each with a transport capacity of 2,300 passengers, 215 cars and 3,000 lane metres of rolling cargoes, i.e. trucks, trailers and buses. GNEWS 3
