Giving Hope: St. Louis Cancer & Breast Institute
Donates Lifesaving Services to GTH Patients
In 2005 Marlys Schuh, M.D,
oncologic surgeon at St. Louis
Cancer & Breast Institute and
co-founder of Gateway to Hope
enlisted the help and support of
her colleagues. Dr. Schuhʼs vision
was to reach uninsured and underinsured
individuals with breast
cancer. The Institute became one
of GTHʼs first partner providers,
donating medical oncology/
hematology, surgical and radiation
oncology services to individuals
who had no other viable means to
access medical treatment, including
publicly funded care.
“The GTH concept is simple, and
it is now proven that it works. As a
participating physician, it is gratifying to give
back,” says Dr. Schuh. The Instituteʼs generous
physicians have performed countless
mastectomies, lumpectomies, radiation treatments,
chemotherapy treatments and more for
GTH patients. “We are very grateful to the
physicians at the Institute for their long-standing
association with GTH,” says Cindy Frank, GTH
Executive Director.
The Instituteʼs Diane M. Radford, MD, one of
several oncologic surgeons in the group, is
extremely dedicated to serving GTH patients.
“Last year, I operated on six GTH patients. I
was particularly inspired by a young patient
whose insurance was insufficient to cover her
care,” says Dr. Radford.
“The Instituteʼs physicians always go the extra
mile to ensure every patient receives proper
medical attention, regardless of ability to pay.
These are the same respected professionals
anyone diagnosed with cancer and covered by
Lyss, GTH Program Nurse Manager.
Jovita Oruwari, MD, FACS, also an oncologic
surgeon and strong GTH supporter says she
grows as a person every time she is involved
with a GTH patient. “How could I say ʻnoʼ to
such a worthy cause? So many women are
disadvantaged for various reasons. They should
not be denied proper health care as well.” Dr.
Oruwariʼs most recent GTH patient was in her
early thirties, with a young child and no health
care. “I felt honored to give her the care she
desperately needed to survive.”
In November 2008 the Institute became partners
with St. Johnʼs Mercy Medical Center, also
a highly valued supporter of GTH. The Instituteʼs
physicians now offer care in Creve Coeur, South
County and Des Peres. With their new relationship
with St. Johnʼs, the Instituteʼs physicians
can now collaborate with the St. Johnʼs Mercy
Physicians.

David Caplin Receives Award from the Rams
Our co-founder, David Caplin, MD,
scored a touchdown when he
received the Georgia Frontiere
Community Quarterback Award
and a check for $7,500 to benefit
Gateway to Hope.
St. Louis Rams owner Lucia
Rodriguez presented trophies and
checks totaling $20,000 to 10 area
non-profits at a special luncheon
in October. Honorees were also
recognized at the Rams vs.
Cowboys game and treated to
a unique game day experience
complete with pre-game field
access and recognition on the
jumbotron during the game.
The Community Quarterback
Award Program honors individuals
who exemplify leadership,
dedication and a commitment to
improving the community in which
they live.
David Caplin, the ultimate team player, was certainly the best first-round draft
choice the Rams could have selected! Gateway to Hope congratulates him for
his accomplishments.
How to Help a Loved One Battle Cancer
As difficult as it is to receive a diagnosis of breast cancer, it is also difficult to know how to deal with a loved one who is
now battling cancer. What do you say? How do you act? Whatʼs appropriate? What isnʼt?
Based on our daily experiences, GTH has a few suggestions for family and friends that you might find helpful.
Acknowledge the situation – Itʼs much easier to talk about the “elephant in the room” than to ignore it. The patient
will appreciate your caring and your honesty. A newly diagnosed cancer patient wants to hear statements such as, “I
heard about your news, and I just want you to know that Iʼm thinking about you. Iʼm really sorry and I hope things go
well.” A few honest words go much further than talking around a situation.
Offer help – but only if you really mean it. – Donʼt say “What can I do?” Make a specific offer: “Can I drive you to
a doctorʼs appointment?” “How about if I bring dinner next Sunday?” “Could I take the kids to the zoo on the weekend?”
Even if the offer is not accepted, it may lead to one that is really helpful and necessary.
Respect privacy – Donʼt talk about your loved oneʼs personal medical matters to others unless the patient asks you to
call a specific person.
Listen – Sometimes the best thing you can offer is a willingness to hear what the patient has to say. Itʼs not easy for a
patient who is facing a life-threatening situation to keep it all inside. Donʼt tell the person to “have a positive attitude”;
just knowing that youʼre there is enough. Never say “Donʼt worry, everything will be all right.” A better approach would
be, “Just know that Iʼm here for you when you want me to be.” And sometimes just being there is just what the doctor
ordered.

Recipient of Hope: Patient Profile
It was a routine appointment for a physical, including a routine mammogram.
That is, until the results came back and then nothing was routine: a small lump
in the breast requiring a biopsy. Diagnosis: Breast cancer.
That was the situation Mary Ellen R., a 55-year-old, self-employed, single woman
faced in the past year.
It is difficult enough to have a diagnosis of breast cancer when one has the
resources to seek treatment. It is devastating when breast cancer is found and
there are no funds or insurance to help get the medical services required to help
you survive.
“The hospital sent me to social services to discuss treatment options, costs and
payment plans,” explained Mary Ellen. “I had a lot of questions, but they took a
long time getting back to me with answers. In the meantime, my cancer was growing.
Without financial information, I could not make a decision.”
“I started doing some research on my own. One of the places I visited was Annʼs
Bra Shop to find out what was available following surgery. That was a stroke of
luck because they told me about Gateway to Hope, the organization that arranges
treatment for those who cannot afford it. In fact, they are a GTH partner provider.
“I called GTH the next day and told my story. Within 24 hours, I was approved to
receive medical and clinical services. I saw Dr. Jovita Oruwari, a surgeon with
Saint Louis Cancer & Breast Institute, to discuss my treatment options. I also
received genetic testing to determine the risk for my cancer to recur. Fortunately,
those results came back negative.”
In July 2008, Dr. Oruwari performed a bilateral mastectomy on Mary Ellen.
Surgery and recovery went smoothly. A five-year regimen of tamoxifen was
prescribed to lower the risk of future recurrence.
Without Gateway to Hope, the ending to Mary Ellenʼs story might have been very
different!
Gateway to Hope is grateful to the following organizations and
foundations for their generous contributions. These prestigious
grants make it possible for us to spread our message and to
arrange care for breast cancer patients who need assistance.
We sincerely appreciate the continuing support of our program
by the following organizations and foundations:
Bland Family Foundation
Fischer-Bauer-Knirps Foundation
Sign of the Arrow
We are also very thankful to have new funding partners and
welcome their support of our program:
Moneta Group Charitable Foundation
St. Louis Rams Foundation
Gateway to Hope is proud of our association with all of these
outstanding organizations and foundations. Please visit our
website at www.gthstl.org to find links to the organizations
and foundations that maintain websites.
Dr. Rachel Borson, oncologist with St. Louis Cancer
& Breast Institute with Mary Ellen R.
“I was in limbo for three months until
Gateway to Hope took care of me and
saved my life,” explained Mary Ellen.
“I am forever grateful to Ann’s Bra
Shop, Dr. Oruwari, and the Gateway
to Hope staff who arranged my excellent
care. I encourage anyone faced
with difficult decisions to ask a lot of
questions. Talk to a lot of people,
they will share their stories and point
you in the right direction to make the
decision that is best for you.”
Hoops for Hope Hoopla Event Scores Big
The evening’s scoreboard said it all – Home 66 Away 0 – recognizing the 66 individuals Gateway to Hope helped survive
their battle with breast cancer. Pictured on the basketball court from left to right are event co-chair Fran Zamler, hosts Kim
and Joe Blomker, and event co-chairs Diane Gallant and Corinna Estep Foy.
It was a “slam-dunk” evening in November at the home of Kim and Joe Blomker who generously opened their indoor
basketball court to host the Hoops for Hope Hoopla. This was the first Gateway to Hope Appreciation Event. Approximately
200 friends of GTH including providers, volunteers, patients and donors gathered on the court to celebrate the successes of
the organization.
Our brand new video, which includes courageous stories from breast cancer
survivors who have received medical and clinical services through GTH, was the
highlight of the evening. Everyone was enthralled with the amazing achievements
of the past three years. Applause was mingled with tears as the individual stories
unfolded on the screen. The video was
produced by Larry Balsamo of Video
Views and Marci Rosenberg, awardwinning
community volunteer who
donated countless hours coordinating
interviews and editing the footage into
an emotional – but encouraging video.
The evening would not have been
possible without the event underwriters,
Michael and Carol Staenberg of the
Staenberg Family Foundation in
conjunction with THF Realty. We
cannot thank them enough.
Carole and Michael Staenberg enjoy the Hoops
Thanks, also, to Corinna Estep Foy,
a terrific job of planning and organizing
the evening.
(for the second year) of Saks Fifth Avenueʼs 10th Annual Key
to the Cure event – a national charitable initiative that raises
funds and awareness for womenʼs cancers.
The event raised more than $130,000 ($30,000 more than last
year!), which was divided between the two recipient organizations.
In addition, two percent of sales from the four shopping
days was awarded to Gateway to Hope and the Siteman
Cancer Center from Saks.
Event co-chairs Pam Toder and Jan Goldstein were thrilled
with the turnout and the results. They said, “This yearʼs committee
was so terrific. Our Siteman co-chairs, Sheri Diemer
year-round through our highly secure Web site or by mail or phone.
We thank everyone who donated in 2008. Each donation and tribute is
immediately acknowledged to the donor and recipient.
All contributions help GTH spread the word about our services and
enable us to arrange breast cancer treatment for those in need. To
make your tax deductible contribution, go to www.gthstl.org or call
the office at 314.569.1113. Spread the word. Spread hope.
Help Us Spread Hope
Every day individuals facing the devastating diagnosis of breast cancer
contact us looking for help because they cannot afford treatment and are
not eligible for government funded programs. We give them hope and so
can you, hereʼs how:
• Golf Tournament Par Excellence! – Monday, June 22, 2009,
at Meadowbrook Country Club – Become a volunteer, sponsor or
golfer for our biggest fundraiser of the year.
• 11th Annual Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure – Saturday, June 13,
2009, downtown St. Louis – Join the Gateway to Hope team for a
fun-filled day to benefit breast cancer research.
• Key to the Cure at Saks Fifth Avenue- October, 2009
Watch our website for further details
• Year-round assistance…
Help in our office, support our local fundraisers and keep the community
informed about our program.
Help us spread hope and support individuals with breast cancer on their
journey to healing.
