A Patient With a Mission
Carolyn K. is a 49 year old woman from
Marble Hill, MO (in the Cape Girardeau
area). She felt a lump in her breast and
immediately went to a 24 hour clinic where
she had a mammogram and an ultra
sound. Diagnosis: Breast cancer-Stage 2!
She was uninsured and needed assistance
in receiving the necessary comprehensive
breast cancer treatment.
Unfortunately she did not qualify for Show
Me Healthy Women. Thankfully, a staff
member in the doctor’s office had learned
of Gateway to Hope via a news report. She
referred Carolyn to us and she
became our patient. The first step was to
receive neo-adjuvant chemotherapy at
Missouri Baptist Cancer Center to shrink
her tumor. Carolyn then underwent a
mastectomy and lymph node sampling at
St. Luke’s Hospital and will soon be
undergoing radiation therapy at St. Luke’s
as well.
Carolyn can’t get over the treatment she
has received... not just the medical
treatment but also the caring attention.
Chris Lyss, her nurse, called frequently
to see how she was doing which was
greatly appreciated. In fact, Carolyn simply
can’t get over what GTH has done for her
and the style in which we have done it.
Her professional background is very
impressive. Carolyn has a Master’s Degree
in counseling. For seven years she was a
Professor of Missions and Counseling at
Wesley College in Florence, Mississippi.
Currently she works for an organization
called Light and Darkness which rescues
girls who have been forced into dangerous
and untenable situations.

Just before her diagnosis she was promoted
to a position involving rescuing girls
globally in 52 countries. This position is
being held for her until she completes her
breast cancer treatment. Carolyn beamed
as she said, “And then I’ll have insurance.
I can’t wait to give back to Gateway to
Hope; they have done so much for me.”
Carolyn is, indeed, a woman on a mission!

Message From the President:
First of all, I want to wish
everyone a Happy and Healthy
2012. I hope you each achieve
your personal dreams and
goals for the coming year.
This past year has been a WOW!
year for Gateway to hope.
To say we’ve been busy
would be a major understatement.
More people are aware
Diane Gallant of us – both potential patients
and potential donors. In 2011
we treated a whopping 94 patients which gives us a
total of 266 for the six years we’ve been around.
(Remember when the goal was one patient a month.
That would equal 72 patients in six years. Thank
goodness we didn’t limit ourselves to our original
projection.)
The easiest way to let you know everything that has
happened is to give you a month-to-month rundown.
January
– Susan Bushnell, Director of Development was hired.
– Young Friends held Cheers to Life at Kim Massa’s
family’s restaurant featuring a wine and beer tasting.
Food was donated by Massa’s.
February
– We celebrated our 5th birthday with a We Luv U
open house attended by many of our Partners and
Providers and friends.
March
– Expansion meetings began under the leadership of
board members Susan Sullivan and Laura Silver.
April
– Cyndi Stotler was hired as Program Nurse Manager
– GTH was chosen by GO! St. Louis as one of the
charities that would receive the dollars raised from
our team. We had 42 runners and have once again
been chosen for this year’s race. (Keep your New
Year’s resolution for getting fit and join our team!)
May
– KMOV media partnership was initiated.
June
– Komen Race for the Cure chaired by Sue Lesser
and Chantelle N. (a GTH patient) over 300
participants on the GTH team.
July
– Gateway to Hope Golf Tournament was successful
with 140 golfers -- a full house (on what was probably
the hottest day of the year).
August
– Stacy Abeles hired as Director of Special Events.
September
– Meetings held with American Society of Plastic
Surgeons to discuss GTH expansion.
– Fashion event held at Neiman Marcus.
– MLR Golf Tournament held at Forest Park with GTH
recipient of the proceeds.
October
– Key to the Cure held at Saks Fifth Avenue.
November
– KaleidoHope’s HOPEus Pocus attended by 242 guests.
December
– Treated 3 new patients bringing our total number to 266.
I know you already read that at the top of this article,
but it’s so important I couldn’t resist repeating it.
So we have our work cut out for us if we are to surpass this
year’s accomplishments. But with all of you behind us and
with the continually increasing patient load, we must
accept the challenge ahead. We just can’t let someone
down who has been diagnosed with breast cancer who
does not have the resources to get treatment.
So let’s make 2012 our best year ever! Thanks for all
your caring and your help.

250 strong in 2011 and we anticipate an even larger showing
this year. Gateway to hope is proud to be a recipient of
funding from the St. Louis Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the
Cure. We are grateful for this longstanding partnership. GTh
team co-captains are patient extraordinaire, Chantelle N., and
Gateway to hope board member, Sue Lesser.

Partner Extraordinaire: Thomas M. Vesely, MD
When Dr. Thomas Vesely received a call out of the blue from Dr. David Caplin asking him
to donate his services to GTH, he immediately agreed. “I didn’t know Dr. Caplin and did not
know anything about GTH prior to his call. I agreed to help during this initial call because I
just want to be able to help people. It’s all about the patient. It was just so easy to say yes.”
And “yes” is what Dr. Vesely has been saying to GTH ever since. Dr. Vesely uses his surgical
skills to place ports in GTH patients. To date, Dr. Vesely has treated more than 10 GTH patients.
Dr. Vesely is board certified in Interventional Radiology, Vascular Radiology and Diagnostic
Radiology. His practice, the Vascular Access Center of Frontenac Grove is a part of St. Luke’s
Hospital. St. Luke’s Hospital has granted generous access to Dr. Vesely to allow him to
perform port placement for our patients.
To Dr. Vesely, treating a GTH patient is identical to treating any other patient. In fact, Dr. Vesely stated, “I told my staff
not to identify the GTH patients to me. In my practice my goal is to treat everyone the same by taking the needed time
to meet, explain the procedure and provide quality care.”
A Promise Made. A Promise Kept!

April Levison and Michelle
Levison Rosch have been the
closest of friends for years,
well before they became
sisters-in-law. Their story
shares the unexpected turns
in life, one amazing gift and
how their bond will continue
to grow for years to come.
At 27, Michelle and her
husband, Mike, were thrilled to
be expecting their first child.
Near the end of her third
trimester, Michelle felt
a lump in her breast. Her
mother had been diagnosed
twice with breast cancer so Michelle understood the
importance of acting quickly. Her fears were confirmed
when testing revealed that she had an aggressive form of
the disease.
A month before her due date, Michelle was induced so that
she could begin treatment for her breast cancer. She
delivered a healthy baby boy, Aiden. One week later, she
had a double mastectomy. Due to the nature of her cancer,
and the increased risk a second pregnancy would bring,
Michelle’s doctor recommended she harvest her eggs prior
to starting chemotherapy and radiation.
At first, Michelle had doubts. Any reservations vanished
when her sister-in-law, April, made an astonishing offer:
“I’ll carry your next baby for you!”

After Michelle digested the magnitude of April’s suggestion,
she reconsidered and decided to harvest her eggs.
April is married to Michelle’s brother, Matthew. At the time,
they had young twin boys, Cole and David. She was thrilled
at the prospect of being a surrogate for Michelle and
Michael; however, she became pregnant and gave birth to
her third child, Spencer, who is now 18 months old.
With April and Matthew’s family complete, the two couples
agreed that the timing was right to move forward. Although
the first procedure was unsuccessful, the second time was
a success. The families were overjoyed to learn they were
expecting not one, but two babies!
Michelle says, “There is a deep connection not just
between April and me but between all four of us. It's hard
to put into words what we feel for each other. Even if this
process hadn't worked, I would have been glad that we
tried. It has been an extreme experience for each of us. In
fact, we will all be in the delivery room when the babies are
born. April gave me hope and made my dream come true.
The most amazing thing is that April doesn't think what she
is doing is a big deal.”
The babies are due this summer; just in time for the annual
MLR Open. Started in Michelle’s honor, the MLR Open is a
golf tournament that benefits Gateway to Hope. Coordinated
by the Levison family, the tournament raises funds to help
support the mission of Gateway to Hope and provide
assistance to individuals with a breast cancer diagnosis.
Gateway to Hope is honored to continue to partner with
Michelle, April plus their families for another fantastic
tournament in 2012. Plus, we can’t wait to meet the newest
family members!

at KaleidoHope Presents:
HOPEUS POCUS
On Saturday, November 19, 2011 more than
250 people magically appeared for our second
annual KaleidoHope. Co-chairs Roberta
Gartenberg and Peggy Musen, along with their
hard-working committee, did a magnificent job
of transforming the Palladium Saint Louis into an
exquisite venue complete with a strolling magician and stilt walker. Disappearing cocktails
and delectable treats were presented by a cloaked catering staff as attendees enjoyed an
eloquent program and a jaw-dropping performance by illusionist Michael Barron.

The third annual KaleidoHope
event will take place on
Saturday, October 27, 2012
at the Palladium Saint Louis.

Guests were not only able to mix and mingle with one another but also with the many
partners, providers, and board members in attendance, as well as a few Gateway to Hope
patients who represented the organization beautifully as event ambassadors and
volunteers. Celebrity emcee Robin Smith guided attendees through the evening, which
included messages from Executive Director, Cindy Frank, and Board President, Diane
Gallant. Patient Chantelle N. brought the audience to tears while sharing her personal story
and the impact that Gateway to Hope has had on her life and her future.
The evening also included a wildly successful Fund the Need facilitated
by our engaging auctioneer, Dave Schumacher, as well as oral and silent
auctions. One lucky attendee even left the event with a spectacular
Cartier watch generously donated by Simons Jewelers.

Hats Off to the St. Gerard Majella Quilters
The “We Love You, Ginny”
project began about 10
years ago when one of the
St. Gerard Majella Quilters
had major hair loss as a result of
cancer treatment.
This compassionate group wanted to
help their friend get through a difficult
time as easily as possible. They found
simple directions online for cancer
turbans which the group calls cancer
caps. At first they used their own fabric –
or purchased it – and only made the
caps for Ginny.

about 2,500 hats. Recently they’ve

Wedding Inspires the Gift of Giving
When Doris Zinn started planning her daughter Lori’s upcoming
wedding, she knew she wanted to acknowledge the love and
hospitality of her friends by doing something special.
What greater way to show appreciation to her
loved ones than to give them the gift of giving.
With that in mind, the Zinn family made a
donation to Gateway to Hope. Then, Doris
used her creative talents to create special
packages for each of her friends that
allowed them to share the gift by including
tribute envelopes in each package and
encouraged them to use them to recognize
people and special events in their lives.
Since the September wedding of Lori and
Mike Allen, Gateway to Hope continues to
receive tributes from many of the Zinn
family’s loved ones who continue to give
as part of the Zinn’s special gift.

from the raffle benefited Gateway to
Hope.
St. Louis Rams and Quintin
Mikell: GTH patients and staff thank
the St. Louis Rams and Quintin Mikell
for their donation of 75 tickets to the
Rams’ game on Sunday, October 2.

Key to the Cure “Passport to the Cure”
On Wednesday, October 19 close to 200 fashionable
attendees boarded “Flight 1019” for the annual Key
to the Cure event held at Saks Fifth Avenue.
This year’s theme was “Passport to the Cure” and everything from the printed invitations
to the “tickets” guests received at the door encompassed the travel motif.
Attendees sampled delicious hors d’oeuvres from some of the area’s premier restaurants
and caterers, while enjoying a variety of beverages. Saks holds this event nationally to
promote awareness of women’s cancers. The St. Louis event benefits Gateway to Hope
and the Siteman Cancer Center.
Thank you to Saks Fifth Avenue for including Gateway to Hope for the sixth consecutive
year. Kudos to our chairs Katie Trout and Victoria Spielberg, and to all of our volunteers

Intoducing Stacy Abeles
Gateway to Hope is proud to welcome Stacy Abeles to the
organization as Director of Special Events.
A St. Louis native, Stacy holds a degree in political science
from Indiana University and a certificate of event management
from the George Washington University School of Business.
She has over 10 years of experience in event planning and
development and spent five years of her career working in
the non-profit sector.
“Working at Gateway to Hope allows me to give back to
the wonderful community that I grew up in and that I love.
I know so many people who have been affected by breast
cancer and it’s wonderful that there is a resource, like
Gateway to Hope, available to those in our area. I continue
to be amazed by the lifesaving treatments provided by
our partners and providers, as well as the social services
support, available to Gateway to Hope patients. The fact
that all of the services are available at no cost is truly
amazing.”
A Winning Tournament With a Lot of Love
Never has the importance of family and friends been more evident
than at the 4th Annual MLR Open Tournament. This year’s golf
tournament, named for breast cancer survivor Michelle Levison Rosch,
was held at Forest Park on September 23, 2011. Many travelled to
St. Louis for the tournament not just to golf and volunteer but to
support Michelle, her husband, Mike, and both of their families who
are St. Louis based. The fabulously fun event includes a seated dinner
post-tournament and a very lively auction. This year included a
surprise video montage of friends and family singing “To Life” from
Fiddler on the Roof in honor of the tournament’s namesake, Michelle,
which was very creative and heartfelt. Gateway to Hope has been
fortunate to be the recipient of the tournament’s fundraising efforts for
the past few years. We can’t wait for this year’s tournament on
Saturday, September 15, 2012! SAVE THE DATE!

Thelma’s Gift Serves 87 GTH Patients in 2011
Thelma May Muskin’s memory lives on through the many patients who
received assistance through Thelma’s Gift. In 2009, Thelma’ family
established this special fund in her memory.
Thelma’s Gift provides: medical insurance assistance, rent or
mortgage payments, utility payments, transportation, prescription and
non prescription medications, childcare and many other necessities of
life that our patients are unable to afford during their treatment.
In 2011, of the 94 patients that came through our doors, 87 patients
utilized the assistance provided through Thelma’s Gift. As more and
more women who have no other means to obtain treatment become
GTH patients, the need for assistance through Thelma’s Gift has grown $10,000
dramatically. With the downturn in our economy, we anticipate the need
to climb this year.
How you can help: Please donate to Thelma’s Gift. Your gift will enable 0
GTH to provide our patients with the necessities of life during the course
of their treatment. Without the aid provided by this fund, patients will be left
with stress and uncertainty as they struggle to cover their monthly living expenses.
