One of our most valued founding
partners is Missouri Baptist Medical
Center, which operates an NCIdesignated
(National Cancer Institute)
cancer center. Our first hospital
partner, Missouri Baptist donates a
wide variety of health care services to
our patients. Hospital professionals
provide operating facilities and medical
supplies, and the hospital’s affiliated
physician specialists from Midwest
Radiological Associates and Midwest
Hematology-Oncology Consultants,
Inc. donate their clinical expertise.
Additionally, in 2007 and 2008, its
foundation stepped up to provide leadership
level financial support to GTH.
Commitment From
The Top
Joan Magruder, president of Missouri
Baptist, actively supports GTH’s
commitment to being a “breast cancer
lifeline.” She volunteers as our
hospital advocate and plays a leading
role in helping recruit other hospitals to
our network. Ms. Magruder recently
made a presentation about GTH to a
group of hospital presidents in the St.
Louis region, launching promising
negotiations with several institutions.
Gateway to Hope is extremely grateful to the Cancer Center physicians at
Missouri Baptist Medical Center who have donated services to our
patients. Pictured in the center’s new Healing Garden: (back row) Debbie
Mercier, RN, MSN, director of oncology services; Alan Lyss, MD, medical
oncologist; Gary Ratkin, MD, medical oncologist; Paul Schultz, MD,
medical oncologist; Humberto Fagundes, MD, radiation oncologist; Joan
Magruder, Missouri Baptist Medical Center president; and (front row)
Jason Li, MD, medical oncologist; Deborah Wienski, MD, medical
oncologist; Atif Shafqat, MD, medical oncologist; and Michael Bolger, MD,
medical oncologist. Not pictured: Marcio Fagundes, MD, radiation
oncologist and John Niemeyer, MD, chief of radiology at Missouri Baptist.
“As a nationally recognized cancer center, 20 percent of
our cancer patients come to us for the treatment of breast
cancer,” said Ms. Magruder. “We became involved as
supporters of Gateway to Hope because of the invaluable
assistance they provide for uninsured and underinsured
women battling breast cancer. At Missouri Baptist, we view
ourselves as stewards of the community’s health, and
working with Gateway to Hope we’ve been able to donate
life-saving medical services to women in need.”

Receiving Hope: Profile of a Patient
When 56 year old Robin B., a single mother of two, moved to
St. Louis in 2004, she had no idea that it was be one of the
best decisions she could make.
In October 2007, Robin observed a change in the size of her
nipple, but did not know what caused it. A few days later while
grocery shopping at Schnucks she noticed Susan G. Komen for
the Cure (Komen) breast cancer awareness information. Just
before she got to her car she went back into the store to pick up
a pamphlet.
“Of course I knew about breast cancer, but I had no idea of the
warning signs or symptoms,” said Robin. “While reading the
pamphlet several red flags immediately went up for me. I called
my sister and we put a plan in action.”
Robin made an appointment at St. Luke’s Breast Care Center for
a test which revealed she had breast cancer. She was scared and
didn’t know where to turn because she has no health insurance.
St. Luke’s referred her to Gateway to Hope (GTH). She also called
Komen and they recommended GTH too.
“From the moment I called Gateway to Hope I knew everything
was going to work out for me,” Robin sighed with relief. “I spoke
with Fran Jackson, one of the program nurse managers, and she
was so nice. She reassured me they could help.”
A few days later Robin had an appointment with Marlys Schuh,
MD, Surgical Oncologist at the St. Louis Cancer & Breast Institute,
to review her diagnosis. Because Robin’s cancer was detected
early, Dr. Schuh was able to perform a lumpectomy, not mastectomy,
one week later at the Ballas Outpatient Surgery Center.
Jason Li, MD visits with GTH patient Robin B. during a routine check up.
Next, Fran contacted Jason Li, MD, Medical Oncologist, at Missouri
Baptist and made arrangements for Robin to get evaluated for
treatment. Currently she is receiving chemotherapy, radiation and
hormone replacement therapy.
“Dr. Schuh, Dr. Li and all of the nurses and staff in their offices
and everyone at Gateway to Hope have been amazing to me,”
explained Robin. “They listen to how I am feeling, they are very
observant of my situation and they always take time to explain
things to me so I am comfortable with my treatment. Their optimistic
approach reassures me that I am getting the best care and I can
focus on getting well and not on my ability to pay for treatment.”
Key to the Cure Boasts Huge Success
Photo coutesy of Ladue News
Event Co-Chairs from left to right: Sheri Diemer, Pam Toder, Jan Goldstein and Krissy Torchin
“ When Saks asked us to be one of
its Key to the Cure beneficiaries,
we never imagined we would
meet a new patient at the gala,”
said Jan Goldstein and Pam
Toder, GTH event co-chairs.
“Just knowing the event made a
difference in one person’s life
was the icing on the cake.”
Heavy rains did not stop more than 1,000 St. Louisans from
attending The Hunt for Pink October. The kick-off gala and designer
treasure hunt at Saks Fifth Avenue launched the retailer’s eighth
annual Key to the Cure, a national charitable initiative raising
funds and awareness for women’s cancers.
The highlight of the evening came when GTH met an attendee
battling breast cancer who was no longer receiving treatment due
to a recent divorce and loss of her health insurance. One of
GTH’s program nurse managers met with her following the event
and we were able to make arrangements to restart her treatment.
“When Saks asked us to be one of its Key to the Cure beneficiaries,
we never imagined we would meet a new patient at the gala,” said
Jan Goldstein and Pam Toder, GTH event co-chairs. “Just knowing
the event made a difference in one person’s life was the icing
on the cake.”
This magical evening was followed by four days of shopping
with a percentage of sales benefiting two local charities –
Gateway to Hope (GTH) and Siteman Cancer Center (Siteman).
The gala raised over $100,000 that was divided between the two
local charities. Gateway to Hope is extremely grateful for all of the
hard work and dedication Jan and Pam provided as co-chairs
working closely with Saks and Siteman. Thank you to everyone at
Saks Fifth Avenue especially Kert Rosenkoetter, Debbie Derrick,
Tim Klinder and Vangie Degner.
We also extend our appreciation to Mercedes-Benz USA for
underwriting the gala and other national charity partners,
including the Entertainment Industry Foundation’s Women’s
Cancer Research Fund. We are grateful to the local support
provided by Oppenheimer, The Private Bank, Plaza Motors, and
Ross & Baruzzini Engineers & Architects. Finally, the gala would
not have been the same without the delicious food, desserts and
festive martinis donated by local caterers, restaurants and
beverage companies.
Bracelet for Hope Makes a Great Gift
her own experience with breast cancer in 2007.
The bracelet features silver and white pearls
spreading knowledge and four charms represent
