Dr. Susan Luedke with Karen K.
At age 37, Karen K. noticed a change in her nipple – one of the outward
signs of breast cancer. Karen worked for a home health agency
that did not provide health insurance. Despite being newly divorced
and without health insurance, she made an appointment with Dr. Alan
Londe at Health South to evaluate the changes in her breast and get
a mammogram.
“I had always gotten ʻwell womanʼ check-ups and there was no history
of breast cancer in my family, so I really wasnʼt too concerned,” she
explains. However, when the results of the mammogram were questionable
and Dr. Londe recommended a biopsy, Karen began to
worry. Not only did she fear for her health, but she knew that she
could not afford treatment. Dr. Londe helped allay Karenʼs fears,
telling her about Gateway to Hope. “Dr. Londe and his assistant,
Debbie Wendt, told me that Gateway to Hope arranges treatment for
women who cannot afford it,” says Karen.
When Karen received the results of the biopsy, it revealed a diagnosis
of Stage III breast cancer. She met the Gateway to Hope eligibility
criteria and was accepted into the program.
GTH referred Karen to Dr.
Susan Luedke, a medical
oncologist, who started her
on a five-month regimen of
chemotherapy to be followed
by a mastectomy and six
weeks of radiation.
“Being in the program with
Gateway to Hope is such a
blessing and has taken a
load off my mind,” says
Karen. “Prior to starting
chemo, they arranged for a
baseline echocardiogram
and a porta-cath to be
surgically implanted by Dr.
Paul Yazdi, one of their
providers. GTH also
coordinated a PET scan for
me. I have a second scan
scheduled in October to
make sure the cancer is
nowhere else in my body.
These scans alone cost over
$10,000. Itʼs been so scary
and theyʼve held my hand.
Chris, one of the GTH
nurses, was so supportive.
They (Gateway to Hope) have
been with me every step of
the way.”

Giving Hope: Profile of a Provider
Karenʼs case is all too familiar to Dr. Susan Luedke, an oncologist on staff at the St.
Louis Cancer & Breast Institute. Dr. Luedke has been treating women like Karen for
nearly three decades. Over the years she has seen not only a steady increase in the
number of diagnosed cases of breast cancer, but also a dramatic upsurge in uninsured
and underinsured patients. The price of chemotherapy drugs alone is “staggering,”
says Luedke, who spoke of the exorbitant cost of care for breast cancer today
and has been very active in petitioning pharmaceutical companies to cover the cost.
Luedkeʼs involvement with Gateway to Hope began at its inception. She says that
treating GTH patients is a “group commitment” between GTH and her medical
practice group.
“There is a real crisis in this country for uninsured and underinsured individuals to
access care early so their cancers are discovered sooner and they have more treatment
options available to them,” Luedke explains. “Itʼs vital for women to obtain
health care and Gateway to Hope is a wonderful program for breast cancer patients
who have no other options.”
Ensuring Hope: Profile of a Volunteer
When Sue Lesser learned of Gateway to Hope, she told
Executive Director Cindy Frank, “If you ever need anything,
let me know.” She didnʼt have to wait long to be
asked! A short time later, after becoming a board member,
Sue volunteered to co-chair the groupʼs inaugural golf
tournament with Jacki Rosen. Not only did she volunteer,
she did an outstanding job, helping to raise nearly
$100,000.
Lesser said volunteering at GTH is a labor of love. Thatʼs
not surprising for a woman who spends countless hours
volunteering for a variety of causes, in addition to working
Sue Lesser
as a pre-school teacher and parenting three teenage
children. Since Lesser moved to St. Louis from Chicago 20 years ago, she has been
involved in numerous activities that benefit women and children including teaching in
the Rockwood and Clayton school districts and volunteering at her synagogue, Miriam
School as well as both Parkway Central middle and high school.
“Although I have not been personally touched by breast cancer, many people I know
have been affected,” she explains. “This wonderful organization is truly a lifeline for
individuals in need. When I became involved with Gateway to Hope, I learned from Dr.
Caplin that a significant number of low income women could not access medical care
for breast cancer and so he, along with Dr. Marlys Schuh, sought to establish GTH.
Now that Iʼm ʻeducated,ʼ Iʼm ready to help out at the next event, “Key to the Cure!”
In Memoriam
On May 30, 2007 the world lost a talented
and noble artist, Paul Degen, creator of
the Gateway to Hope logo. Degen was an
illustrator, caricaturist, painter and sculptor.
Many remember his artwork from the New
Yorker, to which he contributed 34 covers, as
well as the numerous illustrations published in
The New York Times, Esquire, Harperʼs, and
Atlantic Monthly. Degen will be remembered
for his humor and originality, as well as his
generosity to our organization.
Bracelet for Hope
St. Louisan Diane Katzman, one of the nationʼs leading collectible
jewelry designers, has announced that she is designing a limited
edition piece exclusively for Gateway to Hope. A unique silver link
charm bracelet, embellished with silver and white freshwater
pearls that symbolize pearls of wisdom and the importance of
spreading knowledge, will feature four charms that represent the
Gateway to Hope mission: a hope pendent, a heart (compassion
and healing), a four-leaf clover (good luck), and a sun (optimism).
The limited edition piece will come in a signature Diane Katzman
black satin pouch with an artist card that provides information
about Gateway to Hope.
Dianeʼs inspiration for the bracelet came during her own personal
breast cancer experience. During a monthly self-exam in April of
2007, Diane discovered a lump and has since undergone treatment
and chemotherapy. Diane says her battle with breast cancer
has helped raise her awareness of the essential medical attention
breast cancer requires and the resources that may not be available
to people who can not afford treatment.
“Gateway to Hope is spreading the word about the importance of monthly exams, early detection and the need for access to
healthcare,” says Diane, who has been treated by some of the same physicians who donate services to the Gateway to Hope
program. “I am a big proponent of spreading information, so I decided to use my gift of jewelry design and production to help
provide more people with access to the resources that I was fortunate enough to have.”
All sales from this special bracelet, priced at $100, benefit Gateway to Hope. More details about the custom-designed piece,
including purchasing information, are available by calling the Gateway to Hope office at 314-569-1113.
Hope Rocks
If youʼre looking for an entertaining evening for a great cause, plan to stop by Hard Rock Café on
Thursday, October 25, 2007 to hear national recording artists Liston, Rogers, Neinhaus and Crawford.
These talented musicians are a favorite with St. Louisans, playing everything from tunes by the
Byrds to their own original compositions. Best yet, all proceeds, as well as other fundraising activities
that evening, will go to Gateway to Hope. We hope to see you there!
