Jole B’s Vision
Immediately following her 39th
birthday on June 25, 2009, Jole B.
was diagnosed with stage II breast
cancer. For Jole, mother of three,
the realization that she was about
to embark on a difficult personal
journey was further amplified by
the loss of her husband’s job and
their family’s health insurance a
few months later.
Her husband Roger made endless calls to
insurance providers and union representatives
only to find out they would be ineligible for
Cobra insurance coverage after his job loss.
“Even before discussing whether to have a
lumpectomy or double mastectomy with my
surgeon, all I could think about was the fact
that I may not have to decide about surgery
since I had no insurance coverage” Jole
explained.
The fear of not having the finances to cover
surgery, compounded by the physical and
emotional stress of chemotherapy, made
Jole feel as if she had hit rock bottom.
“I already felt half dead because of the chemo.
I didn’t have an ounce of energy. And then,
there were so many unexpected things that
happened along the way that made me feel
like I was in a downward spiral.”
Fortunately, Jole’s surgical oncologist, Dr.
Diane Radford, mentioned Gateway to Hope,
and within days, Jole’s treatment was
underway.
“Everything was already provided. I didn’t
even have to change doctors”, said Jole.
As a way to give back to the organization
which provided her with so much love, Jole
decided to create a gate for Gateway to Hope.
Diane Gallant and Jole B. with Jole’s special gift to GTH.
“I wanted to make something absolutely beautiful
for GTH, because that is how the GTH staff made
me feel during my cancer. So I thought if you saw
a gate like that, you’d see that there was something
wonderful behind it.”
Jole adorned her antique gate with bright flowers
and lights.
“The lights make it sparkle in such a way that
exudes happiness. I think it accurately reflects
how GTH made me feel.”
These days, Jole is slowly regaining energy. She
has completed a series of reconstructive surgeries,
and is hopeful she will reclaim her strength soon.
With regard to her thoughts about dealing with
breast cancer, Jole graciously states, “It’s amazing
to have had so much help from family, friends,
neighbors, and Gateway to Hope. They all just came
out of the woodwork when I needed them most.
That was a major part of my healing process.”

Message From the President: STATE OF THE ORGANIZATION
As I was mulling over what
to write about in this
newsletter, I thought about
all the positive things that
happened in 2010 at
Gateway to Hope. And I
realized that all of you may
not be aware of what they
were. Last year – our 5th –
was one of monumental
growth. Since each of you
Diane Gallant
were a piece of that
growth, I decided that a
"State of the Organization" message would probably be
the most appropriate one I could deliver. So here's 2010
in a nutshell – with a couple of glimpses of what lies
ahead in 2011...
First and foremost, we treated 75 people last year
who had been diagnosed with breast cancer and were
uninsured or underinsured – an incredible figure. When
Drs. Caplin and Schuh founded GTH, the goal was to
treat one patient a month. Our capable nurses, Janie
Weiss and Chris Lyss chart the direction of care with
competence and compassion. Janie also reaches out
into the community to create awareness which brings
in many patients as well as over 145 Partners and
Providers who have helped over 175 patients by
providing treatment. If someone doesn't meet the
guidelines necessary to qualify for our help, the nurses
recommend other resources that can work for them.
In January/February 2011 we have already helped 21
patients. I can't imagine what the rest of the year will bring.
Expanding our office space and a complete decor re-do
was a major undertaking with gratifying results. Patients
now walk into a warm and inviting place that offers
privacy as they work with the nurses to determine
eligibility and the course of treatment. They have a
private conference room where personal conversations
remain private. Come visit anytime!
Another major project was creating our web site. "You've
Come to the Right Place" is the theme. And it's the right
place whether you are a potential patient, you want to make
a donation or you just want to understand what we do.
Our 2010 Par Excellence! Golf Tournament led by Jacki
Rosen was a major success. We had a sell-out crowd.
This year's tournament will be June 27 at Meadowbrook
Country Club with Jenny Bartlow as our Chair. Start getting
your foursomes together and practicing your swing!
Our Young Friends group with John Caplin at the helm
had its first event – a very successful one. "Laughter for
Life" had comedians competing to win the audience's
vote. The winner was so touched by our mission that she
donated back $100 of her prize. We not only raised funds
that night, we raised a lot of friends.
Key to the Cure was held at Saks 5th Avenue with Pam
Toder and Jan Goldstein leading the charge (a Saks
charge, of course!). We had a full house and everyone
enjoyed the fun, prizes, great food and, of course, the
shopping.
The GTH team for the Komen Race for the Cure was our
largest ever – over 250 people. Our first patient, Roberta
L. wanted to do something special. She contacted every
one of our patients to ask them to be part of the our
group. Over 50 patients walked right alongside the rest
of us. It was a beautiful sight!
Many third party fund raisers brought in additional funds.
The largest was the MLR Open – a golf tournament put
on by the family of Michelle Levison who was diagnosed
with breast cancer when she was eight months pregnant.
Michelle is doing great and so is the baby (both attended
the event!). We're proud that GTH will be the recipient of
the significant dollars raised from the Open in 2011.
KaleidoHope, our first “gala”, was sold-out. Guests
enjoyed a delicious dinner, a fun auction and delightful
entertainment – Sizzling Steinways. Co-chairs, Roberta
Gartenberg, Margie Jaffe, Sue Lesser and Fran Zamler
set the bar high for future GTH events. Put November
19 on your calendar for this year's festive party,
Hopeus Pocus!
Finally, I want to thank Cindy Frank for the yeoman's job
she has done as Executive Director. None of the above
could have happened without her guidance and expertise.
And to each of you, thanks for the support – both
monetary and volunteer – you have given to this
phenomenal organization over the past year. I hope that
you are inspired to continue that support in 2011 as we
take Gateway to Hope to even greater heights together!

The First Step is Critical
Early diagnosis is one of the most important factors in the successful
treatment of breast cancer.
Nobody understands this better than GTH! What would we
do without the generosity of our diagnostic and imaging
providers? We are so indebted to The Center for
Diagnostic Imaging (CDI), Berland Imaging, Metro
Imaging and Quest Diagnostics. They provide Gateway to
Hope patients with a multitude of services such as MRI, CT
scans, mammography, x-rays and laboratory tests. Dr.
Harley Hammerman of Metro Imaging said, “It’s a shame
that our government doesn’t spend enough money in places
they should. Therefore, a lot of people don’t have a safety
net when they get sick. Metro Imaging is just trying to help
those people out.”
Welcome Susan Bushnell
Gateway to Hope is proud to welcome Susan Bushnell
to the organization as Director of Development.
A St. Louis native, Susan holds a degree in media communications from Webster
University and has worked in non-profit development for thirteen years. She started with
the American Cancer Society, and after seven years with the ACS, went on to work for
Autism Speaks. She now comes to us from the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Southern
Missouri Regional office, where she worked as the organization’s Executive Director.
When asked why Gateway to Hope appealed to her, Susan said, “My step sister lost
her mother to breast cancer, and after testing positive for the BRCA gene, she decided
to have a preventative double mastectomy and reconstruction. I know how difficult the
process was for her, so I can’t imagine how much worse it would have been if she
didn’t have insurance.”
Many GTH patients come to the organization without a
diagnosis, and it is because of imaging and lab services
that GTH is able to get the patients started on a treatment
plan almost immediately. “After an initial diagnosis is made,
we complete scans to determine the best course of action.
In addition, we provide nurse navigators to help patients
coordinate all the necessary steps in the treatment plan,”
Cathy Myre of CDI, said.
Susan Bushnell
In addition, Susan said she loves the passion and energy present at Gateway to Hope
and is impressed with the sheer dedication shown by the board members and staff. Susan joins Gateway to Hope
at a time when the organization’s largest fundraisers, the Par Excellence Golf Tournament and Fall Gala, are being
planned. “As the Director of Development, I oversee the development portfolio and meet with donors and corporate
partners. I’m excited to jump in, build on GTH’s great foundation, and take it even further.” Gateway to Hope shares
Susan’s enthusiasm and is looking forward to a long and positive relationship with her.
On Your Mark… Get Set...
GO! St. Louis
Gateway to Hope wants you to join our team for the St. Louis
Affiliate of Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, to be held on
June 11, 2011. Last year, GTH patients Roberta L. and
Chantelle C. recruited many of the 250 members who participated.
This year, Gateway to Hope looks forward to increasing
that number. This year’s team co-captains are patients Roberta
L. and Chantelle N. along with GTH board member Sue Lesser.
Event chair, Sue Lesser said, “Every year it’s important for us
to organize a team and increase its size.”
A Sizzling Celebration
Flashes of color and the sounds of dueling
pianos overwhelmed the crowd on September
24, 2010 for Gateway to Hope’s inaugural gala,
KaleidoHope at Moulin.
Over 300 people attended the gala, which featured a fun
cocktail hour, a delicious barbeque buffet, and dueling piano
show performed by musicians Philip “Spanky” Manaois and
Chris “Luppy” Swan.
GTH board members Roberta Gartenberg, Margie Jaffe,
Sue Lesser, and Fran Zamler co-chaired the gala, and
arranged every detail.
Volunteers: Katie Frank, Jessica Gartenberg, Marlowe Lynn, Mackenzie Pass
Bob Clark, Betty and Julian Hess
“The decorations were over the top; the atmosphere was
exhilarating. It was just a wonderfully festive, upbeat event!”
co-chair Margie Jaffe was thrilled to report.
In addition to dinner, cocktails, and entertainment,
KaleidoHope featured an oral auction, where guests bid
on an array of packages ranging from a wine package to a
Dallas sports weekend and a New York theatre package.
Despite
being the
first gala
hosted by
Gateway to
Hope, an
expansive
social network
successfully
recruited a
large crowd
for the event.
Co-chairs: Sue Lesser, Roberta Gartenberg, Fran Zamler,
and Margie Jaffe
“Some of the
guests were not aware of GTH prior to KaleidoHope. The
gala provided awareness. We’ve created ambassadors that
will hopefully continue to expand the network of advocacy
for years to come” GTH co-founder Dr. David Caplin said.
In its first year, KaleidoHope raised much needed funds for
Gateway to Hope, but according to co-chair Sue Lesser,
raising money wasn’t GTH’s only goal. “We wanted to create
an event that would get people to come back. A fun-filled
night of entertainment seemed like a great idea,” Sue said.
And that is exactly what KaleidoHope managed to achieve.
“After the event, people kept saying how wonderful and fun
it was; and that we did a really nice job of raising awareness
about our cause” Sue said.
The gala would not have been possible without the sponsorship
of Clayco; Enterprise Holdings Foundation; Simons
Jewelers; Janice and Hugh Grant; John and Debbie Capps;
Financial Management Partners; Robert Lococo; Luxco,
Marmi; Premier Rentals LLC; and two anonymous donors.
Francine Katz, KaleidoHope Sponsor Chair said “Gateway to
Hope literally saves lives. I was so happy to contribute, and I
was thrilled that so many companies were willing to sponsor
the event.”
KaleidoHope
2011 will take
place on
November 19,
2011. Be sure
to save the
date for
another funfilled
evening.
Raise Your Glass. Raise Awareness. Raise Hope.
All of the above were raised at the Cheers to Life event on January 27, 2011
hosted by Gateway to Hope’s Young Friends Committee.
Food, drinks, and smiles filled the room at Massa’s
Restaurant in Kirkwood. This was the second event hosted
by Gateway to Hope’s Young Friends Committee. Seth Williams
and Kim Massa co-chaired the evening, which featured
premium beer and wine tastings from local distributors, as
well as tasty appetizers courtesy of Massa’s Restaurant.
What started as a small happy-hour concept transformed into
an event with over 125 attendees. One of the Young Friends
Committee’s goals for the evening was to “showcase
Gateway to Hope and raise awareness about breast cancer
as well as the organization,” co-chair Seth explained.
Guests tasted fifteen varieties of wine from Missouri, Oregon,
and California and a variety of locally brewed beers.
Chandler Hill Vineyards, Major Brands, and Trademark
Wines donated wine and raffle prizes, while Highlands
Brewing Company and Hill Brewing Company donated beer.
Bryan Sanger attended the event after hearing about it
through friends. “Tonight was great. The cause is good, it’s
well organized, and of course, I had a great time,” Bryan said.
Co-chair Kim Massa was more than happy with the outcome
of the event.
“Tonight exceeded my expectations; we had more in
attendance than we anticipated. We were successful in
raising awareness, and we showed our GTH patients
and friends a great time,” beamed Kim.
The Young Friends Committee was founded in 2010 by John
Caplin as a way to raise awareness about GTH to St. Louis’
younger crowd. “Many of GTH’s events were geared towards
an older group of people. I wanted to make sure young
people knew about the organization. With the Young Friends
Committee, we are really getting the word out” John said.
The first event hosted by the Young Friends Committee, a
night of comedy known as “Laughter for Life” took place in
June 2010. The second annual “Laughter for Life” event will
take place on July 16, 2011, again at Blueberry Hill.
Key to the Cure Goes “3D”
A shopping evening at Saks Fifth Avenue featuring the 3D's
of Dining, Drinks and Designers enticed over 600 attendees
to enjoy the festivities.
On Wednesday, October 20, 2010 from 6 to 9 pm, guests sampled fantastic appetizers and
desserts from 26 local restaurants, as well as a variety of beverages, while they searched for
prize cards located throughout the store using a special 3D key. Winning cards contained
gift certificates to Saks. In addition, guests entered a raffle for
art, jewelry, purses, and sporting events.
Key to the Cure benefited Gateway to Hope and The Siteman
Cancer Center for the fourth consecutive year. Additionally, for
four shopping days after the event, Saks donated two percent
of sales and proceeds from the Key to the Cure designer t-shirt
to the organizations. This year’s event raised much needed
funds for Gateway to Hope and the Siteman Cancer Center.
Saks Fifth Avenue holds the annual event to raise awareness
about women’s cancers. GTH board members Jan Goldstein
and Pam Toder co-chaired the event for the fourth consecutive
year. Pam and Jan believe that Key to the Cure is a wonderful
way for people to learn about Gateway to Hope’s mission. “It’s
not just the guests who become aware of Gateway to Hope.
Over the years, our mission has made its way to the businesses
which provide food, beverages, and flowers at this event, and
it makes them want to get involved.”
Key to the Cure featured fabulous raffle prizes
Co-Chairs - Natalie Handelman, Jan Goldstein, Susie Knopf and Pam Toder
None of this would have been possible without the
hard work of Saks’ Doug Moss, Debbie Derrick,
Colleen O’Neill and Vangie Degner; GTH co-chairs
Jan Goldstein and Pam Toder; and Siteman co-chairs
Susie Knopf and Natalie Handelman. In addition, we
Chris Lyss’ Birthday Gives Gifts
The beautiful view of Forest Park twinkled
at dusk as many gathered to celebrate Chris
Lyss’ 60th birthday on August 25, 2010 at the
Highlands Golf and Tennis Center.
Chris Lyss and Harriet Glazer
Chris, a program nurse manager at
Gateway to Hope, decided that for
her 60th, she would pay tribute to
her mother who succumbed to breast
cancer at the age of 60. Years prior,
Chris promised her mother she would
use her skills as a registered nurse to
become a breast cancer advocate
and educator in hopes of contributing
to the eradication of the disease.
As part of her promise, Chris decided
to hold a fundraiser for her monumental
birthday. “I first came up with the
idea of holding a birthday fundraiser
after attending Diane Katzman’s 50th
birthday party. She used her birthday
as an opportunity to raise money for
mammograms in Dent County,
Missouri, a disadvantaged rural
community,” Chris explained.
The event took place on a beautiful
summer evening overlooking the
lush golf course at the Highlands.
Cruising with the Chefs
Larissa R., a GTH patient, provided
entertainment with her band,
Wormwood Scrubs. More than 100
individuals attended the celebration.
“My family and friends made
humorous, eloquent speeches which
reflected cherished and memorable
moments in my life,” Chris said.
In addition, Chris’ close friend Harriet
Glazer co-chaired the event. “Her
involvement was paramount to its
success” Chris commented. In lieu of
birthday gifts, guests were asked to
make donations to Thelma’s Gift, a
fund created in memory of Harriet’s
mother Thelma May Muskin.
Thelma’s Gift is a fund which
provides crucial supportive care to
GTH patients in order to make
essential payments for the
necessities of life, such as
mortgages, utilities, and COBRA
payments. Chris discussed the need
for such vital funds to assist the
‘in-between’ population comprised
of hard-working individuals who fall
through the cracks in our health
care system and are undergoing
tremendous financial hardship.
Chris’ party raised over $10,000 for
the fund.
When asked if she would do it again,
Chris proudly stated, “Absolutely!
When I turn 70!”
“How Do I Tell The Kids I Have Cancer?”
by Patricia F. Croughan, MSW, LCSW
One of the first questions a parent asks after receiving a cancer diagnosis is
“How do I tell my kids?” It's an important question and the way in which you
approach it has a profound impact on how your children adjust to your illness.
Silence is not always golden.
Remaining silent on this important
event in the life of the family is harmful.
Silence leaves the children worried and
fearful of the unknown, and afraid to
ask questions for fear of upsetting
Mom or Dad. Remember that in the
absence of facts, children will make up
their own version of “facts” about what
is occurring to a loved one.
Truth is better than fiction. So what
do you say and how do you say it?
First and foremost, tell the truth.
Assure your children that you will
always be honest with them. I have
found that it is best for parents to talk
to their children (no matter what their
ages) very directly. Parents frequently
worry that their kids will get upset when
they hear the news. In fact, even
though the news is disturbing to them,
nothing will affect them more than
keeping the illness a secret and pretending
that all is well.
The first question is usually the
hardest. For most children, regardless
of age, cancer stirs up fears that someone
is going to die. And they ask
immediately, “Are you going to die?”
The bad news is this disturbing question
may be a shock to you; the good
news is that it allows you to have a
very open discussion. Children can be
reassured by a response like, “Of
course this news is scary, but ‘No, I am
not going to die now.’ I have seen the
doctor and I will have an operation to
remove the cancer. Then I'll take some
medicine to make sure the cancer
stays away. Actually, I feel pretty good
right now. In the meantime, life at
home will go on as normally as
possible. If you ask me a question that
I can't answer, I will ask the doctor and
get back to you. Let's make a deal...
I promise you that I will always tell you
the truth about my cancer and we will
discuss any worries you may have.”
It is entirely natural for children to be
afraid of losing a parent. Your response
can go a long way towards helping
them with that worry. Don't forget that
cancer affects the entire family and the
family itself can become a terrific ally
in dealing with the crisis!
Tailor comments to the age and
stage of your child. What to say to
kids and how they will react to the
news also depends on their developmental
phase. An 8 year old might be
curious and ask lots of questions and
even want to meet your doctors and
nurses and see where you will be in
the hospital. Even younger children
might worry about who will take care of
them while Mom is sick or feel guilty
that she's sick because of something
they did. At the other end of the spectrum,
the 15 year old may act blasé –
almost as if they are “cool” with the
news – when, in fact, they may not be.
Obviously, if there are several children
in the family at differing stages of
development, parents have their work
cut out for them!
Denial has to be dealt with as well
as acceptance. Older children often
deny their fears and vulnerabilities.
Healthy adolescent development
involves separation from the family –
their focus is on negotiating growing
up. If your child indicates that they do
not want to talk about it, just tell them
that you understand and if or when
they change their minds, just let you
know. Be sure you're sensitive to the
needs of the moment.
It's never an easy situation. It is
important to monitor your children's
feelings as the family adjusts to living
through a cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Don't forget that children may
develop problems such as difficulty
concentrating at school or difficulty
sleeping at night in response to
ongoing fears and anxieties. This can
occur at any time during and/or after
active treatment. If this happens, try to
determine whether the worry about
cancer is the underlying source of the
changed behavior.
hosted “GTH Loves U” to say
“thanks” to our partners and
providers, patients and donors
on February 10, 2011.
The event was held at our newly renovated office
everyone toured our warm and inviting space.
They mixed and mingled as they enjoyed a variety
of hors d’oeures and desserts.
Roberta Gartenberg, chair of the event was thrilled
with the turnout and the knowledge that the
attendees were able to meet some of the patients
they helped. You could feel the love all evening.
