Message From the President: STATE OF THE ORGANIZATION<br />

As I was mulling over what<br />

to write about in this<br />

newsletter, I thought about<br />

all the positive things that<br />

happened in 2010 at<br />

<strong>Gateway</strong> to <strong>Hope</strong>. And I<br />

realized that all of you may<br />

not be aware of what they<br />

were. Last year – our 5th –<br />

was one of monumental<br />

growth. Since each of you<br />

were a piece of that<br />

growth, I decided that a<br />

"State of the Organization" message would probably be<br />

the most appropriate one I could deliver. So here's 2010<br />

in a nutshell – with a couple of glimpses of what lies<br />

ahead in 2011...<br />

First and foremost, we treated 75 people last year<br />

who had been diagnosed with breast cancer and were<br />

uninsured or underinsured – an incredible figure. When<br />

Drs. Caplin and Schuh founded GTH, the goal was to<br />

treat one patient a month. Our capable nurses, Janie<br />

Weiss and Chris Lyss chart the direction of care with<br />

competence and compassion. Janie also reaches out<br />

into the community to create awareness which brings<br />

in many patients as well as over 145 Partners and<br />

Providers who have helped over 175 patients by<br />

providing treatment. If someone doesn't meet the<br />

guidelines necessary to qualify for our help, the nurses<br />

recommend other resources that can work for them.<br />

In January/February 2011 we have already helped 21<br />

patients. I can't imagine what the rest of the year will bring.<br />

Expanding our office space and a complete decor re-do<br />

was a major undertaking with gratifying results. Patients<br />

now walk into a warm and inviting place that offers<br />

privacy as they work with the nurses to determine<br />

eligibility and the course of treatment. They have a<br />

private conference room where personal conversations<br />

remain private. Come visit anytime!<br />

Another major project was creating our web site. "You've<br />

Come to the Right Place" is the theme. And it's the right<br />

place whether you are a potential patient, you want to make<br />

a donation or you just want to understand what we do.<br />

Our 2010 Par Excellence! Golf <strong>To</strong>urnament led by Jacki<br />

Rosen was a major success. We had a sell-out crowd.<br />

This year's tournament will be June 27 at Meadowbrook<br />

Country Club with Jenny Bartlow as our Chair. Start getting<br />

your foursomes together and practicing your swing!<br />

Our Young Friends group with John Caplin at the helm<br />

had its first event – a very successful one. "Laughter for<br />

Life" had comedians competing to win the audience's<br />

vote. The winner was so touched by our mission that she<br />

donated back $100 of her prize. We not only raised funds<br />

that night, we raised a lot of friends.<br />

Key to the Cure was held at Saks 5th Avenue with Pam<br />

<strong>To</strong>der and Jan Goldstein leading the charge (a Saks<br />

charge, of course!). We had a full house and everyone<br />

enjoyed the fun, prizes, great food and, of course, the<br />

shopping.<br />

The GTH team for the Komen Race for the Cure was our<br />

largest ever – over 250 people. Our first patient, Roberta<br />

L. wanted to do something special. She contacted every<br />

one of our patients to ask them to be part of the our<br />

group. Over 50 patients walked right alongside the rest<br />

of us. It was a beautiful sight!<br />

Many third party fund raisers brought in additional funds.<br />

The largest was the MLR Open – a golf tournament put<br />

on by the family of Michelle Levison who was diagnosed<br />

with breast cancer when she was eight months pregnant.<br />

Michelle is doing great and so is the baby (both attended<br />

the event!). We're proud that GTH will be the recipient of<br />

the significant dollars raised from the Open in 2011.<br />

Kaleido<strong>Hope</strong>, our first “gala”, was sold-out. Guests<br />

enjoyed a delicious dinner, a fun auction and delightful<br />

entertainment – Sizzling Steinways. Co-chairs, Roberta<br />

Gartenberg, Margie Jaffe, Sue Lesser and Fran Zamler<br />

set the bar high for future GTH events. Put November<br />

19 on your calendar for this year's festive party,<br />

<strong>Hope</strong>us Pocus!<br />

Finally, I want to thank Cindy Frank for the yeoman's job<br />

she has done as Executive Director. None of the above<br />

could have happened without her guidance and expertise.<br />

And to each of you, thanks for the support – both<br />

monetary and volunteer – you have given to this<br />

phenomenal organization over the past year. I hope that<br />

you are inspired to continue that support in 2011 as we<br />

take <strong>Gateway</strong> to <strong>Hope</strong> to even greater heights together!
