Message From the President: STATE OF THE ORGANIZATION
As I was mulling over what
to write about in this
newsletter, I thought about
all the positive things that
happened in 2010 at
Gateway to Hope. And I
realized that all of you may
not be aware of what they
were. Last year – our 5th –
was one of monumental
growth. Since each of you
Diane Gallant
were a piece of that
growth, I decided that a
"State of the Organization" message would probably be
the most appropriate one I could deliver. So here's 2010
in a nutshell – with a couple of glimpses of what lies
ahead in 2011...
First and foremost, we treated 75 people last year
who had been diagnosed with breast cancer and were
uninsured or underinsured – an incredible figure. When
Drs. Caplin and Schuh founded GTH, the goal was to
treat one patient a month. Our capable nurses, Janie
Weiss and Chris Lyss chart the direction of care with
competence and compassion. Janie also reaches out
into the community to create awareness which brings
in many patients as well as over 145 Partners and
Providers who have helped over 175 patients by
providing treatment. If someone doesn't meet the
guidelines necessary to qualify for our help, the nurses
recommend other resources that can work for them.
In January/February 2011 we have already helped 21
patients. I can't imagine what the rest of the year will bring.
Expanding our office space and a complete decor re-do
was a major undertaking with gratifying results. Patients
now walk into a warm and inviting place that offers
privacy as they work with the nurses to determine
eligibility and the course of treatment. They have a
private conference room where personal conversations
remain private. Come visit anytime!
Another major project was creating our web site. "You've
Come to the Right Place" is the theme. And it's the right
place whether you are a potential patient, you want to make
a donation or you just want to understand what we do.
Our 2010 Par Excellence! Golf Tournament led by Jacki
Rosen was a major success. We had a sell-out crowd.
This year's tournament will be June 27 at Meadowbrook
Country Club with Jenny Bartlow as our Chair. Start getting
your foursomes together and practicing your swing!
Our Young Friends group with John Caplin at the helm
had its first event – a very successful one. "Laughter for
Life" had comedians competing to win the audience's
vote. The winner was so touched by our mission that she
donated back $100 of her prize. We not only raised funds
that night, we raised a lot of friends.
Key to the Cure was held at Saks 5th Avenue with Pam
Toder and Jan Goldstein leading the charge (a Saks
charge, of course!). We had a full house and everyone
enjoyed the fun, prizes, great food and, of course, the
shopping.
The GTH team for the Komen Race for the Cure was our
largest ever – over 250 people. Our first patient, Roberta
L. wanted to do something special. She contacted every
one of our patients to ask them to be part of the our
group. Over 50 patients walked right alongside the rest
of us. It was a beautiful sight!
Many third party fund raisers brought in additional funds.
The largest was the MLR Open – a golf tournament put
on by the family of Michelle Levison who was diagnosed
with breast cancer when she was eight months pregnant.
Michelle is doing great and so is the baby (both attended
the event!). We're proud that GTH will be the recipient of
the significant dollars raised from the Open in 2011.
KaleidoHope, our first “gala”, was sold-out. Guests
enjoyed a delicious dinner, a fun auction and delightful
entertainment – Sizzling Steinways. Co-chairs, Roberta
Gartenberg, Margie Jaffe, Sue Lesser and Fran Zamler
set the bar high for future GTH events. Put November
19 on your calendar for this year's festive party,
Hopeus Pocus!
Finally, I want to thank Cindy Frank for the yeoman's job
she has done as Executive Director. None of the above
could have happened without her guidance and expertise.
And to each of you, thanks for the support – both
monetary and volunteer – you have given to this
phenomenal organization over the past year. I hope that
you are inspired to continue that support in 2011 as we
take Gateway to Hope to even greater heights together!
