SHANNON ESTUARY<br />
Masters would be aware that the courses to be steered and made good, and the helm/engine orders will<br />
vary due to a number of factors including, but not limited to:<br />
Prevailing weather, variations in channel depth, density or unexpected manoeuvres of other traffic, any<br />
other factor beyond the knowledge or control of the pilot.<br />

Nothing in this document relieves the master of the obligation to produce a berth to berth passage plan,<br />
using up to date charts and all relevant nautical publications.<br />
8.3 SPEED<br />
There are no general speed limits other than to proceed at a speed consistent with safety to include a<br />
care not to generate a damaging wake.<br />
8.4 UKC<br />
A general policy applies so that the minimum UKC shall be 10% of draught.<br />
8.5 RIGHT OF WAY<br />
Rules of the road shall apply<br />
8.6 SPACING OF VESSELS<br />
Maintain Safe distance between vessels in accordance with good seamanship practice.<br />
8.7 PASSING ARRANGEMENTS<br />
A vessel underway shall maintain a safe distance from other vessels.<br />
A vessel shall exercise due caution and common sense when overtaking/passing other vessels.<br />
The overtaking vessel shall communicate its intentions to the vessel being overtaken, and that vessel<br />
shall not hinder the overtaking vessel.<br />
Vessels about to unberth or breakaway from a jetty shall not hinder the passage of passing traffic.<br />
No overtaking or passing is permitted in narrow channels. The Master of any vessel navigating between<br />
Beagh Castle and Limerick shall not overtake, or attempt to overtake another vessel proceeding in the<br />
same direction, or follow too closely in the wake of such other vessel, but if in the opinion of the Master<br />
